1 Claim.
Myinventionrelates to an abrasive sheet holder for" useA in various' abrading operations such as knife sharpening, honing and sanding or the like andthe-objects of my invention are:
First, to provide an abrasive sheet holder of this class in which the abrasive sheet is readily replaceable;
Second', tov provide an abrasive sheet holder of this class in which various grades of abrasive may be use-d in connection therewith for various grades of finish as desired;
Third, to provideV an abrasive sheet holder of thisclasswhich is particularly useful in sharpeningA knives Fourth, to provide an abrasive sheet holder of this* class having novel abrasive sheet holding means;
Fifth, to. provide an abrasive sheet holder of this class having novel hand' guard means for maintaining the abrasive sheet holder in certain locked position;
Sixth, to provide an abrasive sheet holder of this class in which the holding means is readily removable from the main body of my abrasive sheetholder;
Seventh, to provide an abrasive sheet holder of this class in which the abrasive sheet holder member is surrounded at opposite ends of the abrasive'l sheet by securing. `means preventing; infadvertentreleaseof the abrasive sheet; and
Eighth, to provide an abrasive sheet holder of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, efcientlinlitszaction and` which willi not. readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and. other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novell features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claim. Reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, forming a part of this application in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional View of my abrasive sheet holder. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof, taken from the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken from the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, showing a part in elevation to facilitate the illustration and showing by dash lines a varying position of the hand guard in connection therewith. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken from the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional View of a modified form of my abrasive sheet holder. The body member' I, sheet vholder member 2, surrounding member 3, abrasive sheet 4, and" the hand guard 5 constitute` theprincipal parts and portions of myabrasive sheet holder.
The body member I, as shown` in Figs; 1. and 2' of the drawings, is cylindrical in form and is provided with a longitudinal slotted portion, I, open at one side and converging inwardly'toward the middle portions thereof, asI shown best. in Fig. 2 of the drawings.Y This slotted portion, la, extends the full length. of the body member I, and removably positioned therein is the sheet hoid'er member v2. which is substantially V-shaped in cross section, asshowrr in Fig'. The hand guard 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, is preferablymade of heavy gauge resilient wire and operates as a surrounding memer for the body memberl I and the sheet holder member 2:. AsV showny in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the body member ll is provided with aiatporti'on, Ib, in opposed relation to the open side of the slotted portion, la, operating as a detent in connection with the resilient straight side, 5a, of the hand gaurd 5. It being noted that the flat portion, Ib, is an annular groove portion, Ic, formed in the body member I and sheet holder member 2, which maintains the hand guard 5 in longitudinal disposition relatively to the body member l and the sheet holder member 2. The hand guard 5 normally engages the outer side of the sheet holder member 2, retaining the same in the slotted portion, Ia, of the body member I, and when pivoted, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, is spread permitting removal of the sheet holder member 2, all as indicated by dash lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, the surrounding 2,4a4,95o Y r f' member 3 is shown in engagement with the body member I and the sheet holder member 2, surrounding the ends thereof forwardly of the abrasive sheet 4.
The operation of my abrasive sheetholder is substantially as follows:
When placing the abrasive sheet 4 on the body member I, the edge portions 4a and 4b are placed over the slotted portion, la. The sheet holder member 2, at its forward end, 2a, is shouldered against the edge portion, 3a, of the surrounding member 3. When this sheet holder member 2 is forced downwardly into the slotted portion, la, of the body member l, it tightens and wedges the edge portions la and 4b of the abrasive sheet 4 tightly in the slotted portion, la, of the body member l, as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings. At opposite edges of the slotted portion, la, the body member l is provided with radius portions, ld and le, which permit the movement and tightening of the abrasive sheet 4 therearound, when the holder member 2 is forced into the slotted portion la. As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the hand guard 5 is in the dash line position whereupon the end portions 5c and 5d are forced apart permitting the sheet holder member 2 to pass therebetween. The inside diameter of the annular groove portion, lc, is greater than the distance from the ilat portion, lb, to the side of the sheet holder member 2, therefore the turning of the hand guard 5 into the dash line position, as shown in Fig. 3, causes the end portions 5d and 5c to be spread, all as shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The modiiication, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, is provided with a body member 6 and a sheet holder member l', having substantially the same structural characteristics as the body member l and the sheet holder member 2, shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings. This modified structure, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, is also provided with a surrounding member 8, which is substantially the same in structure as the surrounding member 3, shown in Figs. l to 4, inclusive. The modification, as shown in Fig. 5, also incorporates an abrasive sheet 9 arranged in similar relationship to the abrasive sheet 4 as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings. This modified structure, as shown in Fig. 5, however is provided with a handle I9 having a longitudinal bore Ida therein, which surrounds the body member 9 and the sheet holder 'I and is fitted over the rear end thereof, main- 4 taining the connected relationship of the body member 6 and the sheet holder member 1 in substantially the same manner as does the hand guard member 5 of the principal structure, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings.
Though I have shown a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, and a certain modification, I do not Wish to be limited to the particular construction, combination and arrangement nor to the modication, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement and modification, substantially as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an abrasive sheet holder of the class described, the combination of a cylindrical body member having longitudinal slot in one side Wall thereof, a surrounding member tted over one end of said body member, an abrasive sheet surrounding said body member and extending at its opposite edges into said longitudinal slot, a sheet holder member wedged into said slot intermediate opposite edges of said abrasive sheet and having its one end inwardly of said surrounding member, and a second surrounding member at the opposite end of said abrasive sheet from said first surrounding member arranged to maintain said sheet holder member in said slotted portion of said body member, said second surrounding member having laterally extending portions forming hand guard means, said second sLurounding As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the sheet ."v",` member retained in an annular groove in Said body member having a fiat portion operating as a detent, said second mentioned surrounding member having a straight side portion engaging said detent portion and abutted opposite ends extending some distance from said detent portion at one side of said body member.
