1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to awnings and more especially to an awning constructed entirely of wood, and essentially comprising a frontV portion consisting of two series of front and back laterally spaced overlapping slats, and folding sides.
One important object of our invention is to provide a Wooden awning adapted to keep out the sunshine or glare, while at the same time admitting light and air.
A further object of our invention is to provide a wooden awning that may be easily and readily installed, but folded into compact formfor storage or transportation when not in use.
A still further object of our invention is to provide an awning of the character specified that is simple and economical in construction and highly eiiicient and durable in use.
Still another object of our invention is to provide a wooden awning of the character specified that is highly artistic in appearance.
With the foregoing and other objects in view that will appear as the nature of our invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only and are therefore not drawn to scale:
Figure l is a front elevation of a slatted wooden awning, constructed in accordance with our invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section, taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end view.
Figure 4 is a back View.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section, taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2 and Figure 6 is a similar view, taken on line 6-6 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of our invention, and in which drawings like parts are designated by like reference characters throughout the several views, our improved awning essentially comprises a rigid outwardly and downwardly inclined frontportion or section A, and the vertically disposed folding side members B.
Specifically, the front section A consists of a iront and back series of at laterally spaced wooden slats I and 2, respectively, which are arranged with the slats of the front series I alternating with those of the back series 2. This arrangement is designed to keep out the sunshine and glare, while at the same time freely admitting light and air, and hence is a very important feature and advantage of our invention. A plurality of vertically spaced cross bars 3 extend between the front and back series of slats I and 2, and to which the aforesaid slats may be nailed or otherwise fastened. The ends of the cross bars 3 engage the inner faces or walls of the relatively thick side beams 4.
In carrying out our invention, the folding side members B of the awning, are composed of the vertical slats 5 of gradually increasing length from the bottom to the top of the front portion A, held together by a series of cross bars 6. The diagonal front edges of the side members B are hinged, as at 'I, to the rear edges of the side beams 4, and the side members are thus capable of being folded inwardly against the back of the front portion A in order to convert the awning into Very compact form for storage or transportation, when not in use.
The Vertical inner or rear edges 8 of the folding side members B, are rigidly secured to the vertical supporting posts 9, which may be screwed or bolted, or otherwise fastened to the wooden frame or casing I0.
Attention is invited to the fact that the front and back series of wooden slats I and 2, respectively, are preferably formed with central longitudinal ridges or tongues II, with the upper ends of both series of slats formed slightly concave and the lower ends thereof slightly convex, which features give the awning as a whole a more artistic appearance.
The outer faces of the straight vertical slats of the folding side members are also preferably formed with central longitudinal ridges or tongues I2 to increase the artistic effect.
The upper edges of the side beams 4 are curved to correspond with the curvature of the slats I and 2.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood, without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of our invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A wooden awning of the character specified, comprising spaced side beams, a downwardly and outwardly inclined rigid front section, consisting of an outer and an inner series of laterally spaced slats arranged with the slats of one series alternating with those of the other series, horizontally spaced cross bars extending between the outer and inner series of slats of the rigid front section, the ends of the cross bars engaging the side beams, slatted side members having diagonal front edges and perpendicular back edges, hinged at their front edges to lthe rear edges of said side beams and adapted to fold inwardly against the back of the front section, horizontal cross bars fastened to the slats of the side members, vertical supporting posts rigidly secured to the perpendicular back edges of the side members, and trans- 15 verse bolts extending through said Vertical supporting posts for fastening the latter to the window frame.
