Description

March 15, 1949. P. J. LYNN CURTAIN FITTING Filed June 12, 1947 Inventor PERCY J. LYNN Atlorney Patented Mar. 15, 1949 CURTAIN FITTING Percy John Lynn, London, England Application June 12, 1947, Serial No. 754,109
- In Great Britain August 9, 1946 2 Claims. (01. 248-261) This invention relates .to means for supporting curtain rods and like articles and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device or fitting whereby such articles may not only be readily put into and taken out of position but such position may be as readily altered or adjusted by relatively small steps.
With this object in view and in accordance with the present invention, means for supporting a curtain rod or like article comprise a fixed portion and a moveable portion each formed with corresponding corrugations or the like said moveable portion being adapted to engage, on the one hand, with said fixed portion by means of the interengagement of said corrugations or the like and, on the other hand, With the curtain rod or the like, resilient means being provided for maintaining said interengagement.
Preferably the means for maintaining the corrugations in engagement consist of a spring clip carried by one of said portions and adapted to embrace the other so as to restrain movement of said moveable portion in a direction perpendicular to the general plane of the corrugated surface.
If desired, both the fixed and the moveable portions may be formed from sheet material (e. g. aluminum) one part of the moveable portion being folded upon itself and crimped or corrugated so as to be capable of engaging resiliently with the fixed portion while the remainder of the moveable portion is formed, e. g. with a socket or as a spiggot so as to be adapted to engage with the end of the curtain rod, according as to whether said rod is of solid or tubular cross-section.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings of which Figures 1, 2 and 3 are respectively a front elevation, a side elevation and a plan of one form of the device while Figures 4 and 5 are respectively exploded plan and side elevation views of a modification of the device.
As shown in the drawings, the fixed portion of the device is formed from a substantially rectangular strip of sheet material (e. g. aluminum) the major portion a of which is crimped to form corrugations such as I) while the remainder of the strip is bent at right angles to the major portion a and to the length of the corrugations b so as to constitute a base 0 which is pierced by holes d for the reception of fixing screws. It is to be understood, however, that the base 0 may be bent otherwise than at right angles accordin to the position in which the fitting is to be used.
As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the moveable portion is formed from material similar to that of the fixed portion but one part is folded upon itself as at e and the two parallel adjacent parts are crimped as at f and g so that they are capable of embracing the crimped portion a of the fixed portion of the fitting, the natural resilience of the material causing the part a. to be gripped between the parts I and 9. An extension of the material of the folded portion ,f, g, is bent back at right angles to the adjacent portion as at h and bent so as to form a tubular socket 1' for the reception of a round curtain rod such as it.
As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the fixed portion a, c, is similar to that described with reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3 while the moveable portion is made by folding a strip of sheet material upon itself as at m and bending the folded parts at right angles at a point 12 intermediately of their length. The outer ends 0 and p of the moveable portion are crimped in a manner similar to the previously described parts 1 and 9 so that the crimped part a of the fixed portion may be embraced thereby and the corrugations b be engaged by the corrugations of the parts 0, p.
The inner end portion of the strip adjacent to the fold m may constitute or be formed as a spiggot q and be adapted to engage within an end of a tubular curtain rod 1' which, in the present example, is formed from sheet metal in' oval, G-shaped, cross-section.
It will be appreciated that the fixed portion of the fitting may be of any convenient or appropriate length and/or depth according to the degree of adjustment which may be required and that, while the invention has been described with reference to a fixed portion having a single corrugated portion 0. adapted to be embraced between a pair of corrugated portions such as f, g, the arrangement may be reversed so that the fixed portion is formed with a pair of corrugated parts between which a single corrugated part of the moveable portion may be inserted.
Furthermore, while the invention has been described with reference to a sheet metal construction to which it is particularly applicable, it will be realised that the parts may also be moulded or otherwise formed either from metal or from a mouldable plastic; in which latter case some form of internal reinforcement may be included in the usual manner.
I claim:
1. An adjustable device for supporting a curtain rod or the like, which device comprises, in combination, a bracket for fixture to a surface and a rod supporting member removably attachable to said bracket, said bracket having a portion extending therefrom which is transversely corrugated throughout its length, and said member including a U-shaped clip for straddling and clamping to said corrugated portion, the arms of said clip being correspondingly corrugated to mesh with the corrugations of said bracket portion, whereby said clip may be selectively fixed to said bracket portion along its length.
2. An adjustable device for supporting a curtain rod or the like, which device comprises an angle bracket including an arm for fixture to a surface and a free arm for supporting the rod, the
free arm being corrugated perpendicularly to the angle of said bracket and throughout its length,
in combination with a rod supporting member ineluding a U-shaped clip for straddling and clamping to said corrugated arm, the arms of said clip being longitudinally corrugated with the corrugations thereof corresponding to each other and to those of the bracket arm so that they interfittingly mesh when said clip is attached to said bracket arm, whereby said clip may be selectively fixed to said bracket arm along its length.
