This invention relates to a stovepipe and chimney coupling and has for its primary object to effect a permanent smoke-tight joint between a stovepipe and a chimney.

Another object is to enable stovepipes of different diameters to be accommodated in the stovepipe hole of a chimney,

A further object is to effect a smoke-tight junction of the stovepipe with the chimney and at the same time firmly clamp the stovepipe in place irrespective of slight irregularities in diameter.

The above and other objects may be obtained by employing this invention which embodies among its features a thimble adapted to be secured in the stovepipe hole of the chimney, a sectional smoke pipe embracing face plate detachably secured to the thimble and means to advance at least one section of the face plate toward the other to clamp a stovepipe in the face plate and effect a smoke-tight junction with the chimney.

Other features includes eyes carried by the thimble and projecting from the outer end thereof for passage through corresponding openings in the face plate, wedges adapted to be driven through the eyes to slidably support the face plate sections on the thimble, and a wedge adapted to be driven through the face plate into engagement with the thimble to cause one section of the face plate to advance toward the other and effectively clamp a stovepipe in position in the thimble between the sections.

Referring to the drawings in detail, a chimney I0 is equipped with a stovepipe hole H which, in accordance with the present invention, is preferably square.

Fitted in the stovepipe hole II is a thimble l2 comprising a substantially square tube of a length suificient to project well into the wall of the chimney ID. The thimble I2 is provided in its side walls with spaced openings l3 through which suitable fastening devices I4 are projected to enter the wall In and secure the thimble in position in the stovepipe hole ll. Welded or otherwise secured to the side walls of the thimble I2 and projecting from the outer end thereof are eyes l5 which serve as supports for the face plate, to be more fully hereinafter described.

The face plate above referred to is designated generally l6 and comprises a bottom section I! and a top section IS, the latter of which is provided with an offset flange 19 which, when the sections are assembled, is adapted to overlie the outer face of the section IT, as will be readily understood upon reference to Figures 1 and 2. Each face plate section is provided with a substantially semicircular cutout 20 which, when the sections are assembled, forms a substantially circular opening through which the end of a stovepipe 21 is thrust. Formed at spaced intervals near the side edges of the top and bottom sections of the face plate I6 are slots 22 for the reception of the eyes l5 above described. Formed in the upper section 18, midway between its side edges, and so located with relation to the slots 22 that the upper wall thereof aligns with the inner face of the top wall of the thimble I2 is a slot 23, the purpose of which will be more fully hereinafter explained.

In order to assemble the device and cause the sections l1 and 18 to clamp the stovepipe 2| in proper position with relation to the chimney I0, I provide a plurality of wedges 24, one of which is driven through each eye I5 in order to hold the sections of the face plate It against the outer end of the thimble 12. A similar wedge 24' is driven through the slot 23 so that its inner end engages the inner face of the top wall of the thimble [2. A stovepipe is then entered into the opening formed by the cutout portions 20 of the plate sections I1 and I8, and upon driving the wedge 24' further into the thimble 12, it will be evident that the plate 3 will be advanced toward the section I! firmly to clamp the stovepipe in place. It will be understood, of course, that the slots 22 in the section l8 are of sufficient length to permit the section 18 to move downwardly on the eyes l5, while the slots 22 in the section I'I retains said section against such movement. Due to the overlap by the flange IQ of the upper edge of the plate section [1, it will be obvious that a smoke-tight junction between the two sections will at all times be preserved.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A stovepipe and chimney coupling comprising a thimble adapted to be secured in the stovepipe hole of a chimney, spaced eyes carried by the thimble and projecting beyond the plane of the outer end thereof, a sectional Stovepipe embracing face plate having cutout portions to receive a stovepipe and openings" to receive the eyes, wedges entering the eyes to retain the face plate on the thimble, and means to advance one section of the face plate toward another section thereof to clamp a stovepipe in the faceplate and effect a smoke-tight junction therewith,"

2. A Stovepipe and chimney coupling comprising a thimble adapted to be secured in the vstovee pipe hole of a chimney, spaced eyes carried by the thimble and projecting beyond the plane of the outer end thereof, a sectional stovepipe embracing face plate having cutout portions to receive a stovepipe and openings to receive the eyes, wedges entering the eyes to retain the face plate on the thimble, and a wedge entering one section of the face plate and engaging the thimble to advance said section toward another section of the face plate and clamp a Stovepipe between the sections.
