Description
March 1, 1949. J. MATHIAS 2,463,042
COMBINED BACK REST AND FISH POLE HOLDER Filed Sept. 10, 1945 INVENTOR. FIG. 2 h J6 M M ATTOMEY Patented Mar. 1, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINED BACK BEST AND FISH POLE HOLDER 4 Claims.
vried to the lake or stream where the fishing is to be done, by hooking the device: over the bumper of an. automobile.
Another object is to provide means on such a device that wedges itself on the seat of a rowboat to hold the device in position.
A further object is to provide a fish pole holder, in such a device, that will hold a pole at any point within a wide range of angles to the boat.
My invention also has for its objects to provide such means that are convenient in use, easily installed in position and easily removed therefrom, economical of manufacture, relatively simple and of general superiority and serviceability.
The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description. However, the drawings merely show and the following description merely describes one embodiment of the present invention, which is given by way of illustration or example only.
In the drawings, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a device embodying the foregoing objects.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of said device, partly broken away, looking in the direction of the arrow A of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view, partly broken away, looking in the direction of the arrow B of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a reduced perspective view of said device in an operative position.
Referring more in detail to the invention, the entire back rest may be made of a single piece of stock. It is believed clear without further illustration that the stock may be solid or tubular, but in either event it is preferred that it be resilient.
The ends 6 of the stock are bent under body members 1. The ends 6 are arranged in a diverging relation to the body members I, as best shown in Fig. 2, whereby they may wedge a seat 8 of a rowboat 9 therebetween, to hold the device in position.
Upstanding members ID on the body members I carry substantially horizontal, rearwardly projecting shoulders l2 that support a curved crosspiece l3 against which the user rests his back.
A ring I4 is mounted. on. the side of one of the body members], such as by welding, to receive the butt end of a fish pole I5. An arm l6 has a hooked end 1.! for engaging the shaft of the fish pole, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The rear end of the arm i6 has a. collar l8 that permits vertical and horizontal. adjustment of the arm. A winged set screw [9 holds the collar inadjusted positions.
In the use of my device, it is believed clear that it can be easily transported to the place of use. It not only can be packed where desired in the car, but, as explained, can be carried by merely hooking the ends 6 over a front or rear bumper of an automobile.
In application the device is pushed rearwardly on a seat 8 of the boat, until such seat is securely wedged between the body members 1 and the ends 6, in the manner described and shown. The harder the device is pushed rearwardly, the tighter it wedges in place. The arrangement of the parts explained hereinbefore permits a resilience at the bends 20 between the body members I and the upstanding members I0, so that a person will find comfort in leaning back against the cross-piece while fishing. It is to be understood that a blanket, coat, or the like may be thrown over the cross-piece Hi to make it more comfortable. This device makes it more pleasurable when fishing several hours, than is possible when just sitting on the seat 8 of the rowboat without any form of back rest. The ease with which the present device can be carried makes it especially attractive to sportsmen.
t is also believed clear that a fish pole is supported at the desired angle by inserting its butt end in the ring I l and then adjusting the arm l6 vertically and horizontally to hold the pole where desired. When traveling, the arm l6 may be dropped down to a position just above the adjacent body member l, for compactness.
While I have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred embodiment of my invention, the construction is, of course, subject to modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to restrict myself to the particular form of construction illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of all modifications that may fall within. the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class referred to, a body 2,4eao42 member arranged to extend across a seat on the top thereof, hollow receiving means mounted on the body member to receive the butt end of a fish pole, a enerally upstanding, back-support member connected with the body member, and an arm having a horizontally adjustable connection with the upstanding member and having means to engage a fish pole disposed in the butt receiving means.
2. In a device of the class referred to, a body member arranged to extend across a seat on the top thereof, an open-ended receiving means mounted on the body member to hold the butt end of a fish pole extending therethrough and resting on the seat, a generally upstanding back-support member connected at the rear of the body member, an arm having a horizontally and vertically adjustable connection with the upstanding member, and hook means on the arm for engaging a fish pole whose butt end is disposed in the receiving means, the hook being disposed forward of the receiving means to support the pole in aforwardly inclined position.
3. In a device of the character referred to, seat engaging members having generallyupstanding members joined by an outwardly curving member to form a back rest, one of said seat engaging members having an eye for receiving the butt end of a fishing pole, and adjustable means on one of said upstanding members whereby the vertical distance of said means above said eye may be varied, said'means engaging and supporting the member on the horizontal portion comprising a, fixed ring, the member on the upwardly directed portion comprising a hook-ended elongated element extending in the general direction of the horizontal portion of the frame side, and means for adjustably positioning the end hook of the latter member both vertically and horizontally with respect to the fixed-ring.
