Patented Feb. 22, 1949 UNIT-ED {STATES PATENT ()FFlC-E CQMBINED CIGARETTE OR TOBACCO PACKAGE AND ASH TRAY Thomas Joseph Bryan, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application October 29, 1945, Serial No. 625,231
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an improved tobacco package, for cigarettes or smoking tobacco, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a foldable receptacle or tray for ashes, which is attached to the side of the tobacco package, and may be opened to receive ashes or the stub ends of cigarettes, when the user is visiting, or driving in an automobile, or vacationing or resting in the outside of his home or otherwise.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tobacco package with a cigarette stub or ash container or tray, which can be made of fire resisting paper or similar material, and attached under production methods, to one side of the package, and normally sealed by a label, and then opened when desired by the customer or user, to receive ashes of the burning of the cigarettes or tobacco.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain new and useful combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification, and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, showing the ash receptacle folded against the tobacco package.
Fig. 2 is an end View thereof.
Fig. 3 is another end view, but showing the ash receptacle opened.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view, showing the ash receptacle opened.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation, showing the folded sides of the ash receptacle sealed by a rupturable label or paper seal.
Fig. 6 is an edge view of a folded ash tray, which is adapted to be attached to any standard tobacco package.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the practical embodiment of the invention, 5 designates a standard package in which smoking tobacco or cigarettes is sold and from which supplies are drawn for smoking.
In the case of either smoking tobacco or of cigarettes, the user is frequently required to safely deposit ashes and finds 'no tray or receptacle available. If the user is visiting, he may be sensitive in asking for an ash tray, and if he is outdoors he may be forced to deposit the ashes or the stub end of the cigarette, or the bowl residue of his smoking pipe, in the open ground, with the possible hazard of starting a fire, through undetected or carelessly dropped live particles.
The present invention aims to provide the standard cigarette or tobacco package with a foldable ash holding tray l of the package 5.
This tray includes the bottom 8, the opposing sides 9 and I0, and the opposing ends II and 52, all hinged on the bottom and connected at the corners [3 to provide a folding structure. The depth of the sides 9 and III is shown to be approximately equal to one-half the width of the bottom, so that when folded the sides will lie in a common plane against the package.
The ends H and 52 are formed with diagonal fold lines or creases l4 and I5, extending from the inner and outer corners l6 and I1 toward the centers of the sides, at the outer edges thereof. These diagonal fold lines or creases permit the ends to fold upon themselves, between the sides, when the receptacle or ash tray is collapsed.
In Fig. 5 I show a paper seal !8, which may be printed with any trade announcement or advertising matter, which is attached to the outer surfaces of the folded sides 9 and I0, and provided with a weakening line I9, centered between the opposing edges 9 and ll) of these folded sides, so as to permit of quick and easy rupturing, by the pressure of a finger nail or the use of a pencil, toothpick or other pointed object.
In Fig. 6 I show a folded ash tray 20, which is provided on its bottom side with a removable label 2!, to cover a deposit of adhesive material, which is capable of attaching the ash tray to any tobacco or cigarette package. This adhesive material is of the type that is used on adhesive tape, and which remains tacky for an indefinite period of time.
The paper used in the manufacture of the foldable and attached ash tray may be made slow burning or fire resistant by the use of any approved process or chemical treatment, and may be made of thin asbestos material.
When common commercial paper is used for the making of the foldable ash tray the paper may be treated with a fire proofing composition like the following:
Ammonium sulphate, 8 parts; boracic acid 3 parts, boraX 2 parts, and water parts; and may be then coated with water glass.
The invention also provides means for quickly snufiing out live cinders or burning particles of tobacco, as the sides can be folded over any ashes or residue deposited in the receptacle, so as to exclude the same from the circulation of the air, and thereby quickly extinguish the burning particles or residue.
The additional cost of the foldable ashtray 6, attached to one side would be entirely insignificant, on a large production basis, and provides a distinguishing mark for identifying the tobacco package on sale.
It is understood that various changes and alterations may be resorted to in carrying out the invention, as defined by the claim hereof.
Having described the invention, I claim as new:
The combination with a standard commercial cigarette filled package having a plurality of sides, of a fire resisting paper ash tray attached to one side of the package and normally collapsed against the side of the package, said tray com prising end members which fold between side members approximately one-half the width of the base of-the tray, and a paper seal attached to the folded sides of the tray and provided with a weakening line located between the confronting edges of the folded sides.
