Description

Feb. 15, 1949. A. s; COOPER I HANDBAG SOUNDING DEVICE 'Filed Aug. 6, 1948 IN VEN TOR.
& 1 Y o m .m /r 7 M #8, 4 a W Patented Feb. 15, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,461,588 HANDBAG SOUNDING DEVICE Abraham S. Cooper, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application August 6, 1948, Serial No. 42,876
3 Claims. 1
My invention relates to a novel combination or a sounding device with a womans handbag, whereby the sounding device is automatically actuated when the handbag is opened and/or closed. The device according to the invention may be utilized either as an addition to a childs handbag, whereby the device would normally emit one tone when the bag is opened and a second and difierent tone when the bag is closed, whereby to encourage the child to place articles into the handbag to hear the two tones. In the case of an adults bag, the sounding device would normally be used as an alarm to warn the owner of the unauthorized opening of the handbag by a sneak thief.
With the foregoing in view, it is an object of my invention to provide an improved sounding device for a womans handbag.
A further object is to provide an improved sounding device for a womans handbag which is automatically actuated upon at least the opening of the handbag.
A further object is to provide an improved sounding device for a womans handbag which comprises a pair of frame arms hingedly connectcd together to provide a closure for the bag, of a sounding device-operatively associated with the arms whereby the sounding device is actuated as the arms are moved to handbag-opening positions.
Other objects and advantages reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts thereof, and will be readily understood by those skilled in the art upon referenceto the attached drawing in connection with the following specification, wherein the invention is shown, described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a typical womans handbag showing the device according to the invention applied thereto, parts being broken away for clarity;
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the handbag of Figure 1, parts being broken away to show the sounding device in a compressed position;
Figure 3 is a view like Figure 2, but showing the handbag at least partially open and showing the sounding device in an expanded position.
Referring specifically to the drawing,fl wherein like reference characters have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, It! designates any suitable womans hanfd a'g. which includes the usual U-shaped frame bers H which include depending frame arms'lz hingedly connected together by any suitable hinge-providing means l3. The frames H are maintained in the closed position by any suitable interengaging latch members [4. As so far described,
the structure is conventional and forms no part of my invention.
The device according to the invention contemplates rigid extensions of the frame arms [2, or at least one pair of the same, which extensions are adapted to move toward and away from each other as the handbag is closed and opened, respectively. Moreover, it is contemplated to position a compressible expansive member between such extensions, which member is adapted to be compressed and expanded as the handbag is closed and opened, respectively. Likewise, as contemplated, the expansive member is so formed as to emit a sound at least upon the expansion of the member. Thus, in Figures 1 and 3 there is illustrated by way of an example a pair of rigid extensions I5 and I6 which are crossed below the pivot or hinge l3 whereby the extensions will move toward and away fromv each other as the handbag frame arms l2 are moved toward and away from each other as the handbag is closed and opened. The extensions l5 and I6 are provided with depending end portions i1 and I8, respectively, which in the form illustrated are secured to the opposite ends of any suitable bellows I9. One end of the bellows I9 is apertured, as at 20, and any suitable sound-producing member 2| is inserted in the aperture whereby to cause the bellows to emit a sound as the same is expanded from the compressed Figure 2 position to the Figure 3 position as the handbag is opened.
Of course, such sound is caused by the rushing of air into the bellows as the same is expanded. Obviously, the sound-producing member 2| could be of such a character that it would produce a sound upon both the opening and closing of the handbag in a well known manner. As aforesaid, thiswould be particularly desirable in the case of a childs handbag to encourage the child to close the bag once it has been opened.
As shown in Figure 1, there may be a bellows I9 attached to each pair of arms ill with the sounding device 2| so formed as to emit a different sound for each bellows whereby a dual sounding effect is achieved as the handbag is opened and/or closed.
While I have shown and described what are now thought to be the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of other forms and expressions. Consequently, I do not limit myself to the precise structure shown and described hereinabove except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. The combination with a handbag including a pair of frame arms hingedly connected together to provide a closure for said handbag, of a pair of crossed extensions of said frame arms, a compressible expansive member interposed between said extensions'and adapted to be compressed thereby as said arms, are moved to a handbag-closing position, means for expanding said member as said extensions move apart upon opening of said arms, and said member being adapted to emit a sound upon at least the expansion thereof,
The combination with a handbag including a pair of frame arms hingedly connecte'dtoge'ther to provide a closure for said handbag, of a pair of crossed extensions of said frame arms, a compressible expansive member interposed between said extensions and adapted to be compressed thereby as said arms are moved to a handbagclOSiIiEfIDDsi'E-iflrl; means for expandings'aidmemher as" saidexitension's move apart upon opening of said arms, and said member 'being' adapted-to emit different sounds upon the expansion and compression thereof.
