TILE MAGHINE.
No. 246,116. Patented Aug. 23,1881.

WITNESSES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK FRARY, or FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
TILE-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,116, dated August 23, 1881,
Application filed May 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK FRARY, of Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tile-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a front or face view of the dod of a tile-machine embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the clay-bog and dod, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to machines for manufacturing drain-tile; and it consists in the combination, with the longitudinally-adjustable die or mold and its rod or support, of a pair of transverse or vertical eye-rods, by means of which the mold may be adjusted laterally in the dod-hole or mold-plate, substantially as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the clay-box,in which works, as usual in this class of machines, a screw follower or plunger (not shown in the drawings) for forcing the clay out through the dod A. The die of the latter consists of a plug, B, of the shape of a truncated cone, having a central aperture or here, b, by which it is inserted upon the forward end or core-pin, O, of a horizontal rod, 0, which is made with a squared section, 0 upon which the narrow end of the die impinges. The die is held in place by a nut, D, upon the forward threaded end of the core-pin. The horizontal rod 0 is inserted through eyes E and F of vertical rods or bars E and F, respectively, which are inserted through the top and bottom of the clay-box and fastened each by a pair of nuts, e c andff. The eye F of the rearmost rod is screw-threaded, and the rear end of rod 0 is likewise threaded to enable it to be screwed into the eye. After the two eyes E and F have been brought in a line with one another by adjusting their respective rods E and F by means of their nuts 0 e and ff, the rod G O,
with its die B, is inserted into said eyes or bearin gs through the circular aperture Gr,which is concentric with the eyes E F, and screwed into the rearmost threaded eye, F, until the face of the die is flush with the outer face of the dod-plate A, after which rod 0 is secured in place by ajam-nut, H, at its rear end. This construction and arrangement of parts permits the clay a free escape through the annular aperture g in the dod, so that it will form a solid and compact tube.
In this class of machines as heretofore constructed it has been usual to fix the die or core centrallyin thedod-hole by means ofa bridge spanning said hole, which has the efl'ect'of di viding the body of clay a short distance back.
of the dod, making an imperfect tube, which is apt to split longitudinally in drying and burning, on account of imperfect unison of the parted clay after passing through the dod. Another advantage of my improved construction is that the die B can readily be adjusted so as to be not only in the exact center of the dod-hole, (thus making .pipe of even thickness,) but by adjusting rod 0 in its threaded eye F the face of the die may be adjusted so as to be at all times flush with the face of the dod A, which is of the highest importance in the manufacture of uniform and first-class tile.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- The combination of the clay-box A, having the dod-plate A, provided with the circular aperture G, conical die B, provided with the central rod, 0 G O, screw-threaded at both ends and provided with the nuts D and H, and transverse parallel rods E and F, having eyes E and F, and provided, respectively, with the nuts 6 c and ff, for adjusting the position of rod 0 G O and its die B laterally within box A in respect of the aperture G, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK FBARY.
