COMBINATION TABLE AND FOOTREST Filed March 25, 1946 I. I l! I l INVENTOR ANDREW ROTH A TTORNEY Patented Jan. 25, 1949 COMBINATION TABLE AND FOOTREST Andrew Roth, Philadelphia, Pa., assignor to Bunting Glider Company, Philadelphia, Pa, a corporation of Pennsylvania Application March 23, 1946, Serial No. 656,687
- 2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to improvements in furniture and more particularly to an improved construction of a combination table and footstool designed especially for outdoor use, such as on porches and lawns. I
Among the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive construction of tubular metal frame which lends itself readily to use either as an auxiliary table or as a foot rest of the type generally employed as an extension of a chairto provide a lounge chair effect.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear more fully hereinafter, it being understood that the present inventionconsists substantially in the combination, construc tion, location and relative arrangement of parts, as will be described in detail hereinafter, as shown in the accompanyin drawings and as finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the present invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combination unit showing it set up as a table;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the unit adapted for use as a foot rest or foot stool;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the unit as shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view thereof;
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is a sectional View showing a detail of construction.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be observed that the combination unit of the present invention essentially consists of a base frame assembly designated generally by the reference numeral l and a hinged top assembly designated generally by the reference numeral l l.
The base frame assembly l9 comprises a pair of side members lZ-IZ of generally inverted U-shape and formed in each instance of tubular metal stock. The vertically exending portions of each side member constitute a pair of supporting legs I3-l4 for each side of the unit. The frontal leg I3 of each side member is shorter than its rear leg l4 so that the interconnecting portions |-|5 of the side members provide for the unit a pair of laterally spaced parallel side rails which are inclined with respect to the horizontal. The side members l2--l2 are rigidly joined together in laterally spaced parallel relation by a plurality of transversely extending tieods 16, I1 and I 8, the extremities of these rods being secured to the side members by bolts 19 or by welding or otherwise.
.The top assembly of the unit includes a' rec tangularframe 20 also formed of tubular metal stock, this frame being hingedly connected to the base frame assembly by means of the upper rear transverse tie-rod l8 which extends freely through the opposite side portions of the top frame 2!! adjacent the rear end thereof. The frame 2!) is preferably of somewhat greater length than that of the base-frame, its front end extending sufficiently beyond the frontal tie-rod It so that it may rest thereon when the unit is to be employed as a foot rest, as shown in Figure 2. When in this position, the top frame 20 is disposed substantially in the transverse plane of the elevated side rail portions [5-45 of the base frame assembly.
Hingedly secured to the front legs i3-l 3 of the base frame is a supporting bail 2| having a transversely extending portion 22 by means of which the top member I i may be supported in horizontally disposed position for use as a table top, as shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4. For so supporting the top member, the hinged member 25 is upwardly swung to engage the lower surface of the top member, such engagement being rendered secure by means of a pair of headed studs 23 which are respectively carried by the side portions of the top frame 20 andwhich engage the transversely extending portion 22 of the hinged support. When the unit is employed as a foot rest, the hinged support 2! is swung downwardly and rests against the front legs |3i3 of the unit.
It will be understood, of course, that the top member 20 may be treated in any desired manner to provide it with a supporting surface. its rectangular frame may be fitted with a solid panel (not shown) or it may be provided with a latticed surface, as shown, formed by interlaced bands 24, the opposite extremities of which are provided with anchoring members 25 having hook-like terminal elements 26 respectively engaging openings 27 formed in the tubular stock of the frame, this type of anchoring being more particularly described in my copending application filed March 23, 1946, Serial No. 656,688.
It will be understood, of course, that the present invention is susceptible of various changes and modifications which may be made from time to time without departing from the general principles and real spirit of the present invention, and it is intended, accordingly, to claim the same broadly as well as specifically as indicated in the appended claims.
Thus, 1
What is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A combination table and foot-rest unit comprising a pair of laterally spaced side frame members of inverted U-shape, each having vertically extending supporting legs connected at their upper ends by a longitudinally extending element, the frontal legs of said frame members being of substantially greater height than the rear legs thereof whereby said longitudinally extending elements are rearwardly and downward: 1y inclined with respect to the horizontal, transversely extending elements interconnecting said frame members to constitute the same a rigid, self-sustaining support for a top. member, a top member hingedly mountedbetween the raised ends of said longitudinally extending elements and adapted to be swung from a raised horizontally disposed position into an inclined position substantially coincident with the commontransverse plane of said longitudinally extending elements, means pivotally secured to the rearlegs of the unit and adapted to be swung into. position to support said top; member in horizontally disposed position to serve as a'table top: for the unit.
2. A. combination table and foot-rest unit of the character described comprising means providing an open top frame having laterally spaced parallel side members; and means for supporting said top frame in any one ofseveral adjusted positions, said last-mentioned means including a pair of laterally spaced side frame members, each of generally inverted U'-shape form to provide vertically ext-ending leg portions interconnected by a longitudinally extending portion contiguous to one side'of the open top frame, the leg portions at one end of the unit being of different length than those at the opposite end thereof whereby said longitudinally extending portions are inclined with respect to the horizontal to respectively embrace said top frame when the latter is in inclined foot-rest position, and means for supporting the opposite free end of the top frame in either one of said several adjusted positions, said last-mentioned means including a transversely extending member rigidly interconnecting said side frame members to serve as a fixed rest for the free end of said top frame and a swingable bail having a cross-bar adapted to be swung above the elevation of said fixed rest to serve as an auxiliary elevated rest for said top member.
