u 2 Claims. (01.150-35) y This invention, generally stated, relates to ladies' hand bags which in the trade are termed cosmetic bags or utility bags or vanity bags and has more especial relation to a bag of the character stated in which a compartment is provided for the holding of eyeglassesor spectacles.
The principal object 'of the present invention is to provide a ladys bag in which there is provided a compartmentseparate and distinct from the main part of the bag which separate compartment is at the outer side of the bag so that it will be conveniently accessible without opening the bag itself.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a construction of the character stated in which the partition for the eyeglasses may be closed so that the contents are concealed from View irrespective of the main flap of the bag being in closed or open position.
An additional object of the invention is to previde an impro-ved form of bag which will ll a long-felt want for an article of this kind and which will materially facilitate the finding of the eyeglasses in crowded places where ladies find difliculty in opening a bag and securing eyeglasses from, possibly, the inner and bottommost portions of the bag or from another small receptacle contained therein.
Yet still another object of the present invention is the provision of a combination bag and spectacle case which can be made of one single piece of material and which is, therefore, well adapted for being manufactured in mass production so that it can be sold at a very reasonable price.
Further objects of the instant invention reside in any novel feature of construction or operation or novel combination of the parts present in the embodiment of the invention described and shown in the accompanying drawing whether' within or without the scope of the appended claims and irrespective of other specific statements as to the scope of the invention contained herein.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a front elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional View on the line 2-2 of l;
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the embodiment of Fig. l; and
Figure 4 is a development plan view of one single sheetl of material of which the entire device can be made.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing the numeral I denotes the body of my improved combination bag and spectacles case. This body I can be made of one or more layers of pliable material such as cloth, leather, felt, silk, velvet, rayon, brocades, or of any other knitted, woven, or rubberized fabric or the like. In the instance shown, the body I is made of two layers of material, the outer layer and a lining. The numeral 2 denotes the front wall panel, andthefnumeral 5 denotes the rear wall panel of the bag or pocket part. The portions 3 and 4 kare folded upwardly so that they form a double wall which is extended over the major portion of the rear wall panel 5, as may be seen in Figs. 2 and 3. A flap 6 at the outer extremity of the rear wall panel 5 is adapted to overly the upper portion of the front wall panel 2, and a flap 1 is provided at one side of the portion 4 and is adapted to overly the portion 3, when the device is finished as per Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
The sequence of the folding operations of the sheet or blank, Figure 4, to form the completed combination case, Figure 2, preferably is as follows:
The portion 4 of the blank is folded upwardly, along the folding line indicated by a dash-anddotted line between the portions 5 and 4 in Figure 4, upon the back of the portion 5; then the portion 3 is folded downwardly, along the folding line indicated by a dash-and-dotted line between the portions 4 and 3 in Figure 4, upon the portion 4; and the portion 2 is folded, along the folding line indicated by a dash-and-dotted line between the portions 3 and 2 in Figure 4, around the outer side of the fold of the portions 5 and 4 previously referred to and upwardly upon the portion 5.
After the sheet has been folded in the manner shown in Fig. 2, the lower horizontal edges ofthe folded portions 3 and r4 are connected to the panels 2 and 5 by rows of stiches I4 and I5 (Fig. 2) or in any other suitable manner, and the upper edge of the folded portions 3 and 4 is likewise secured to the rear panel 5; then the vertical edges of the parts 2 to 5 are connected to each other and only that edge of portion 3 which is opposite to ap 1 will be left open. In -this way a bag is formed which is open at the upper side and which has at its rear a longitudinal eye glass case that may be closed by the flap I.
Any suitable means for keeping the flaps 6 and 'I closed, such as press bottoms 8-9 or a loop and button I O-I I or the like can be used, or slide fasteners can be provided in place o f such closure means and the flaps 6 and 1.
The interior of the bag can be provided with a pocket I2 which is secured to the inner side of the rear panel 5 by a row of stitches I3 in a well known manner.
While there has been shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to a single modication, it will be understood that Various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form anddetails of the device illustrated and in itsfoperation may be made bytho'se 'skilled in the artwitlioutdeparting from the spirit of the invention. It is the intention, therefore, to be limited only as indicated by the scope of the following claims.
Having 4thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters v'latent 'in the United States is: i
1. A combination hand bag and spectacle case formed from pliable material comprising, afbag part having iront and mear wall panels, a longitudinal :pocket part consisting of upwardlyiolded vportions of said front-andrear wallpanels which portions are attached to the outer side of `the main portionof said rearwa'll panel, a ap'con- -nected'to the upperend of said rear Wall panel and overlying the upper-portion of said front wall panel, and a flap connected to one of the lateral ends of an inwardly folded portionof said rear wall panel and partially overlying the upwardly folded portion of Vsaid longitudinal pocket, the yedges of said upwardly folded portions which are Vopposite 'to said last mentioned i'lap -being connected to each other and to the main portions of said front and'rear wall panels,`th'e`lower hori zontal edges of said main portions being oon- -nected'to each other, the upper horizontal edges kline, and thenthe thus bbtaineddouble'layer of saidblak is'again folded ipon itself so that two adjoining sections of it form a box plait adjacent a portion of the blank, the two longitudinal edges Sand onefshortedgeof said box plait being secured to the blank so as to form a longitudinal pocket which has 'a 'short open edge portion, while the lateral 'fedges-of `the remainder of the blank are secured to one another so as to form a bag having an open upper longitudinal edge portion, those edge portions oflsaid blank which are to be left `open being 'provided with iiap portions,
all-substantially as'described.
