Application July '15, 1946, .Serial 1No. 83,605
2 Claims.
My invention relates to a bed lamp,.more particularly for use in connection with'bedsteads for controlling .the .directionolig'ht emitted from a lamp whereby individuals in a double bed or adjacent .twin beds may participate iin reading while theother person sleeps with the light source shielded from his vicinity, andthe objects .of my invention are:
First, to .provide a bed'lamp of this classhaving individual .segment shutters adapted to shield opposite sides o'f .a ybed from a light source so thatindividuals in ,the bed may enjoy a variety of .lighting conditions 'for reading .or sleeping simultaneously;
Second, 'to provide ,a 'bed lamp of this class havingadjustable shutters and an indirect lighting window which 'indirectly lights the room and provides a dim, lowlight-which is undisturbing to sleeping persons;
Third, fto -providea A'bed lamp o'i this class in which segment shutters are adjustable-on acommon axis,;at 'opposite-'sides vof the middle portion of my bed lamp providing a very compact, .neat adjustable lamp of this class; and
IFourth, to Aprovide 'a bed lamp of this .class Whichis very simple 'and economical of construction, eicient in operation and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, forming a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of my bed lamp and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof taken from the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing parts and portions in elevation to facilitate the illustration.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views oi the drawing.
The main casing segment I, segment shutters 2, 3, 4 and 5, bearings 6 and l, lamp 8, bracket 9, nuts I D, and the night light window I I constitute the principal parts and portions of my bed lamp.
The main casing segment I is provided with an arcuate outer surface Ia, having integral end portions Ib journaled on the bearings 6 and 1. It will be noted that the arcuate side wall portion Ia of the main casing segment I covers substantially 120 of the periphery of my bed lamp, as shown lll best in Fig. '1 of the drawings. Secured kin the arcuate Vslide wall l.portion 'I'a of the main casing segment I is the night light 'window Il whichis a .translucent'mem'ber arranged to transmit lig'ht passinglthrough the sl'ottedportion Ic ofthe main casing segmenti. 'The segment shutters! and '3 are 'also1provided lwith arcuate 'side wall `portions extending substantially about theperiphery of the bedl'amp as s'hownin Fig. 1 of the drawings. These arcuate portions 2a and 3a 'of the segment shutters i2 `and 3 are connected by an annular :bead Aportion '312, substantially at the middle 'portion "of Avthe lamp, whereby the lsegment shutter 2 Ais slidable relatively to `the segment shutter l3 in the bead portion-3b. Itwill'be noted that the segmentfshutters v2 Aand '3 are provided with end portions "2b and I3c respectively, jour-- naled on the bearings 6 and I respectively. lThe main'casingsegment I Iisprov'ide'd with-an arcuate bead `portion I'd'a'daptedto'receive the'bead portion 3b of the segment shutter 3 when rotated about :the laxis ofthe bearings 6 and 1. Positicned inwardly'o'f the segment shutters 2 and 3 are-the segment shutters 4 vand SWhich are similar in construction to 'the segment shutters 2 and `3 andare journaledfonithe bearings 6 and 1. The bearings-ii and I nare hollow 'tubular bearings similar in construction. The bearing 6 is provided with a iiange portion 6a engaging the inner side of the segment shutter 4 and a nut l0 engaging the outer side of the main casing segment I. The nut I0 is screw-threaded on the bearing member 6 for holding the parts in assembly. The bracket 9 secured to the bearings 6 and 'I supports my bed lamp in connection with a bedstead A, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The segment shutters 2 and 3 are provided with knobs 2c and 3d respectively for manually shifting the same about the axis of the bearings 6 and 1. The segment shutters 4 and 5 are provided with knobs 4a and 5a respectively for use in shifting the segment shutters 4 and 5 about the axis of the bearings 6 and 1. It will be noted that the segment shutters 4 and 5 are connected by an annular bead 5b substantially at the middle of my bed lamp permitting individual movement of the segment shutters 4 and 5. The lamp 8 is a. conventional lamp, supported in the socket 8a in connection with the bearing 1, through which the cord 8b passes, all as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings. y
The operation of my bed lamp is substantially as follows: i
When secured in connection with a bedstead or the like, designated A in Fig. 1 of the drawings,
the segment shutters 2, 3, 4 and 5 may be entirely closed, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, permitting the light from the lamp 8 to pass through the translucent window II. In this manner, my bedlamp emits a low dim night light which passes through the night light window Il only. When it is desired to shut oi the light at one side of the middle portion of my bed lamp, the segment shutters 2 and 4 may bemoved relatively tothe segment-shutters 3 and 5 respectively, whereby one end of the lamp is open while the other is closed, permitting one end of the bed lamp to emit light while the other end remains shaded. The knobs 4a and 5a and the knobs 2c and 3d are for use in manual operation of the segment shutters 4 and 5 and 2 and 3 respectively.` W'hen it is desired to indirectly light the room in which my bed lamp is positioned, the main casing .segment I is rotated toward the bottom side of my bed lamp while the segment shutters 2 and 3 remain in open position, whereby light is cast upwardly onto the ceiling of the room eiciently indirectly lighting the room without casting an intense light upon the bed beneath my bed lamp. When rotating my bed lamp axially of the bearings 6 and 1, the bracket 9 supports the bearings 6 and l at opposite ends of my bed lamp permitting the entire lamp to be freely rotated on the bearings 6 and 1. i VThough I have shown and described a particular construction,4 combination and arrangement of parts and portions, AI do not wish to be limited to the particular construction, ,combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims. v
Having thus described my invention,l what I claim asvnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
l. In a bed lamp of the class described, the combination of a main casing member having an arcuate side wall and integral end portions, bearing concentrically of said arcuate side wall engaging said end portions, segment shutters journaled in connection with said bearings and arcuately telescopic relatively to said main casing member, said segment shutters being freely pivotal relatively to each other and separated substantially at the middle portion of said lamp intermediate said bearings, second segment shutters pivotally connected with said bearings and having arcuate side wall portions concentric with the side wall portions of said main casing member, said second segment shutters being separated intermediate said bearings and independently movable relatively to each other, and handles secured to said segment shutters at opposite ends of said bed lamp.
2. In a bed lamp of the class described, the combination of a main casing member having an arcuate side wall and integral end portions, bearhaving arcuate side wall portions concentric with the side wall portions of said main casing inember, said second segment shutters being separated intermediate said bearings and independently movable relatively to each other, and handles secured to said segment shutters at opposite ends of said bed lamp, said segment shutters connected together intermediate opposite ends of said bed lamp and having arcuate bead portions forming a connection therebetween.
