WHEELED FIGURE TOY Filed Oct. 25, 1946 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ra -E Patented Nov. 9, 1948 UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE l I 2,453,469 L WHEELED FIGURE TOY Elia Stapa n, Chicago, 111. A Application October 25, 1946, Serial No. 705,552
claims. (01. 4610 7) This invention relates to a wheeled figure toy for use by small childrenand it is one object of the invention to provide a toy adapted to be drawn or pushed along a floor or pavement. and
thereby cause objects constituting elements of l the toy and representing goats or similar animals to be moved toward and away from each other as though they were butting each other.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy wherein there is a carriage supported by wheels and over which is a platform formed with longitudinally extending slots through which bars pass, the bars being mounted for sliding and tilting movements and having their lower ends so connected with Wheels of the carriage that as the wheels turn the bars willbe moved ina manner causing the goats to be moved toward andaway from each other in a very realistic representation of goats fighting. t
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy of this character wherein the bars carrying faces of a handle 1. Since the arms 6 fit loosely aboutthe axle or bar 4 the handle may be tilted vertically to an angle allowing a child to readily grasp it and impart movement to the carriage.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy wherein tilting movement of the bars carrying the fighters is caused by a crank shaft car ried by and turning with wheels of the carriage.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy which is simple in construction, easy to operate, and not liable to be broken.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side View of the improved toy.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the top.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken transversely through the toy along the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken vertically along the line 44 of Figure 2.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the toy.
Fig. 6 is a side view showing the goats in butting contact with each other.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the body portion of the toy. i
This toy is of the trundle type and has a body including a carriage or chassis I having side bars 2 between which extend cross bars 3. A front bar 4 is mounted between front ends of the side bars and constitutes an axle for a front wheel 5 and also a carrier for arms 6 which project i6 and the spaced bars 14 and I5 cooperate to form tracks which extend longitudinally of a platform I! under side edge portions :thereof. Slots I8 whichextend longitudinally of the platform extend from front and rear ends thereof in spaced relation to opposite side edges of the platform and through these slots passibars l9 having inner or lower ends connected by cross bars or bridging bars 20. The pair of bars l9 and the companion bar 20 forms a U-shaped carrier upon upper portions of the arms of which are mounted objects 2| which in the present illustration are goats but may be other animals or the like. The objects constitute fighters and are to be moved toward-and away from each other during use of thetoy. The cross bars or bridges 20 have been provided with screw eyes 22 through which the crank portion of the crank shaft II loosely passes. Therefore the carrriers will be held in downwardly converging relation to each other and as the crank shaft turns with the wheels III the carriers will be shifted vertically and moved longitudinally of the platform toward and away from each other. Guide bars 23 are mounted across the bars or arms of the carriers will be moved into and out of butting engagement with each other as shown in Figures 1 and 6 during use of the toy.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A toycomprising a frame, supporting wheels I for said frame, posts rising from the frame at the sides thereof, a platform supported upon said posts, upper and lower bars spaced vertically from each other and forming tracks extending longitudinally of the platform under side pore tions thereof, said platform being formed with slots leading from front and rear ends thereof, a crank shaft extending transversely of the frame and rotatably mounted midway the length thereof, driving wheels carried by end portions of said crank shaft, U-shaped carriers each having side bars extending vertically through the slots and connected at their lower ends by a bridging bar, said carriers converging downwardly and having their bridging bars provided with eyes loosely engaged about the crank of the crank shaft, guide bars mounted across the side bars of said carriers and having their ends fitting between the upper and lower bars of the tracks and mounting the carriers for sliding movement longitudinally of the platform and tilting movement toward and away from each other asthey move longitudinally of the platform, and objects carried by the ;2. A toy comprising a frame having supporting wheels and means for moving it forwardly and rearwardly, a platform supported over said "frame and formed with longitudinally extending front and rear slots, longitudinally extending tracks under side portions of said platform, a
movements of the fraina'carriers having side arms extending vertically through said slots and bridging bars connecting the lower ends of the side arms,- eyes carried by the bridging bars and loosely engaged about the crank shaft for imparting movements to the carriers as'the crank shaft turns, bars mounted across the arms of the carriers and having their ends slidably and pivotally engaged with the tracks and mounting the carriers for sliding movements longitudinally of the platform and tilting movement toward and away from each other during the sliding movements, and objects carried by the side arms of the carriers above the platform and moved into and out of butting engagement with each other by movements of the carriers.
crankshaft rotatably mounted transversely of said frame and adaptedtobe rotated during 3. A toy comprising a carriage, a platform over said carriage formed with longitudinally extending slots, tracks extending longitudinally under said platform, a crank shaft rotatably mounted transversely of the carriage and adapted to be rotated as the carriage is moved, carriers extending vertically through the slots and having their lower ends loosely connected with the crank shaft for imparting movements to the carriers as the crank shaft is rotated, guides carried by the carriers and slidably and pivotally engaged with the tracks to mount the carriers for sliding movement longitudinally of the slots and tilting movement toward and away from each other as they move longitudinally of the slots, and objects carried by-portions of the carriers above the platform moved toward and away from each other by movements of the carriers.
4. A toy including a platform formed with longitudinally extending slots, a crank shaft rotatably mounted under the platform, carriersextending vertically through'the slots and having lower ends looselyconnected with the crank shaft whereby the carriers will be moved during rotation of the crank shaft, tracks extending longitudinally of the platform, guides carriedby the carriers and slidably and pivotally, engaged with the tracks to mount the carriers for sliding movement longitudinally of the slots and tilting movementtoward and away from each-other, andobjjects carried bythe carriers above the platform and moved into and out of buttinglen'gagement with each other by movements of the carriers.
5. A toy comprising a platform formed with longitudinally extending slots, tracks extending longitudinally of the platform, carriers extending vertically through the slots and "converging downwardly, guides carried by the carriers andengagcd with the tracks to mount the carriers for sliding movements longitudinally of the slots and tilting movements to-wards and away from each other during their sliding movements, rotary drive means under the platform connected with the lower ends of the carriers and imparting movement to them when rotated, and objects carried 'by the carriers above the platform and moved toward and away from each o'ther by movements of the carriers. v
