Description

M. E. SAVOIE 2,453,272 COMBINED MAGNIFIER AND TELEPHONE DIALING IMPLEMENT Nov. 9, 1948.
Filed Feb. 12, 1947 Patented Nov. 9, 1948 COMBINED MAGNIFIER AND TELEPHONE DIALIN G IMPLEMENT Mark E. Savoie, Cleveland, Ohio Application February 12, 1947, Serial No. 728,095
3 Claims.
My invention relates in general to a combination magnifier and telephone dialing implement.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an implement which may be used to magnify the printings in a telephone directory and which has a rotatable ball on the end thereof to facilitate the dialing of telephone numbers.
Another object of my invention is to provide telephone dialing implement which has a rotatable ball of luminous material on the end thereof to engage the dialing disc on the telephone.
Another object of my invention is to provide a telephone dialing implement with a rotatable ball having a larger diameter than the diameter of the openings in a telephone dial whereby the rotatable ball is held away from the numbers on the telephone.
Another object of my invention provides a simple and efficient method of rotatably supporting a ball on the end of an elongated magnifier with the rotatable ball constrained against longitudinal movement relative to t e magnifier.
Other objects and a fuller understanding of my invention may be had by reerring to the following description and claims. taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in wh ch:
Figure 1 of my drawings represents a front elevational view of my combination magnifier and telephone dialing implement;
Figure 2 is an edge view of my invention with certain parts shown in cross section for clarity;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the parts of my invention with the parts illustrated in cross section and before assembly to better illustrate their characteristics; and
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view along the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
As is illustrated in the drawings. m combination phone dialing implement and magnifier is constructed of an elongated magnifying element Hi and a rotatable ball H. The elongated magnifyirg element i8 constitutes a curved magnifying portion 12 having a handle l3 on one end thereof and a cylindrical portion [4 on the other end thereof. The rotatable ball II is turnably mounted on this cylinder portion l4 and is constrained from longitudinal movement relative thereto.
The magnifying portion [2 of the elongated magnifying element ID has somewhat convexly curved sides 5 to cause it to magnify the printing in a telephone directory when the magnifying portion I2 is supported parallel to the page in the directory and at a predetermined distance therefrom. The handle 13 has recesses IS in the faces I thereof for receiving advertising material. As is illustrated in the drawings the magnifying portion I 2 is graduated from its dimensions at the handle and to the Width of the cylinder portion I4 which supports the ball II. By sloping or gradually changing the dimensions to meet the dimensions of the magnifying portion I2 to meet the diameter of the cylinder portion I4, I have found the implement to operate satisfactorily and to be much easier to use. The magnifyin element and handle is constructed of a transparent plastic material.
I have provided the cylindrical portion M with an annular groove 20 extending therealout. In constructing my phone dialing implement and magnifier, a soft metal sleeve 2| is loosely fitted over this cylindrical portion M. A projection 22 in the sleeve 2| extends into the annular groove 20 in the cylindrical port on It. This annular groove 20 and projection 22 interlock to permit the sleeve to rotate on the cylindrical portion I4 and prevent the sleeve from moving longitudinah ly of the cylindrical portion M. The outside diameter of the cylindrical portion M being less than the inside diameter of the sleeve 2!, the ball H is freely rotatable on the cylindrical portion M. The ball H has an opening I! therein for receiving the sleeve and the cylindrical portion I4 and may be force fitted or fastened by other suitable means, such as gluing onto the sleeve.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I have constructed the ball from a luminous plastic material wh ch will low in the dark. However, other suitable plastics and materials may be used. The outside d ameter of the ball is l r' er than the diameter of the openings in a tele hone dial to prevent the ball from going through the openings in the dial.
In using the phone dialing implement, a telephone operator positions the ball on the directory and places a fin er under the handle. This positions the magnifying portion of the impleme t at correct focus for reading the pr nting. To di l a number, the ball is placed in a hole of the desired number on the tele hone dial. As t e dial is rotated, the ball is turned on the end of the combined magnifier and telephone die ling implement. As the ball is of larger diameter than the opening in the telephone dial, it will not touch the number plate behind the dial.
Although I have described my invention in its preferred form with a certain degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure of the preferred form has been made only by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A phone dialing implement comprising an elongated magnifier having a first end portion and a second end portion, a luminous ball turnably carried by the first end portion and operably engageable with a phone dial to facilitate dialing, and a handle integral with the second end portion to cooperate with the luminous ball to position the elongated magnifier disposed therebetween' at correct focus for reading a telephone directory.v
2. A phone dialing implement comprising an elongated magnifier having beveled edges and having a first end portion and a second end portion, a focusing means turnably carried by the first end portion and operably engageahle with a phone dial to facilitate dialing, and a handle integral with the second end portion to cooperate with the focusing means to position the elongated 4 magnifier disposed therebetween at correct focus for reading a telephone directory.
3. A phone dialing implement comprising an elongated magnifier having a first end portion and a second end portion, a dial engageable ball turnably carried by the first end portion of the elongated magnifier, and a handle integral with the second end portion and cooperative with the said dial engageable ball to position the elongated magnifier disposed therebetween at correct focus 1 for reading a telephone directory.
