This invention pertains to clothing and more particularly to mufflers intended for neck wear.
It has among its objects to provide a muffler that will be more convenient to place in position on the person of the user, and to wear. Another object is to provide a mufller that can be put on quickly, which will fit closely and comfortably and be without bulkiness or unevenness. A still further object is to provide a muffler with adjustments that will permit it to adapt itself to various sizes of persons, and keep it neat in appearance, while at the same time afford assured protection to the users chest and the collars he wears at the time. This all tends to make the muffller wear longer and remaincleaner. Still another object is to provide a new and improved type of muffler for a person to wear around his neck. Mufflers for neck wear in common use consist of a scarf of rectangular form. They are wound around the clothing about the neck and upper portion of thebody, with the end portions overlapped cross-wise at the V-cut of the vest situated over the chest .of the user. Improvements have beenmade in mufflers utilizing a scarf made in the form of a letter U. The apron section covers the back portion of the body and the joining section being looped around the neck with the legs brought over cross-wise on the chest of the user and then brought under the arms and joined together at the back of the body at the hip line and fastened. These forms require a lot of materialthat seems unnecessary. They require skill in placement, and they do not give the protection and comfort expected of them.
In this invention, the muffler consisting of a chest plate for covering the upper chest of the user with pendant straps attached to it are made long enough to encompass the neck of the user once andoverlap cross wise in front under the plate, where they are fastened together adjustably to form a secure and comfortable muffler. The chest plate is preferably tailored to make a neat and attractive front, fitting close to the neck and filling in the space left open at the front of a coat. It can be placed quickly in position. It is economical in the use of material. It can be folded neatly and put away in the pocket of the user. It locates itself on the chest of the user and affords proper protection in a definite and adequate manner.
In order to illustrate a form of the invention reference is made to the appended drawings. which illustrate a particular embodiment of the same in which 1 Claim. (01. 2-91) 2 Figure 1 is a view showing a muffler embodying this invention and in place on the user,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the mufller before placing samein wearing position, and in first position around the neck,
Figure 3 is a view showing the muffler in the second position around the neck of the user, and Figure 4 is a View showing the muffler in its third and final position around the neck of the wearer.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
In the drawings is shown a muffler comprising a chest plate 6, for covering the upper chest of an individual and which has pendant straps 1 and 8 respectively attached to it, The straps are made long enough to encompass the neck of the user and fold crosswise in front under a The chest plate is preferably the plate 6. formed with a semi-circular cut 9 to fit the front of the neck, and the attaching portions Ill and l I of the straps 1 and B respectively are narrowed in width as indicated to facilitate the folding. The
widened portions l2 and I3 of the straps l and 8 respectively have plural buttons l ito permit adjustment and adjustable fastening to the snap l5. The straps are curved at IE to fit the contour of the neck if the muffler is wound closely to it. The muffler. when put on, fits closely around the neck of the user and provides a finished appearance, since all parts lay fiat and neatly. The fasteners provide a definite closure for the article and allow the coat to be closed evenly over it without danger of replacement.
While but one general form of the invention a is shown in the drawings and described in the specifications, it is not desired to limit this application for patent to this particular form or in any other way otherwise than limited by the scope thereof, as it is appreciated that other forms of construction could be made that would use the same principles and come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A muffler or the like comprising a rectangular piece of material having a longitudinal cut-out portion of substantial width positioned therein for fitting around the neck of the user, said cut- 1 out portion extending approximately one third the length of the mufller and being located cen-,
length. for folding over the chest, 9, front plate formed at the end of said mulfier opposite to the longitudinal slit to cover the widened straps and a plurality of fastening means for adjustably securing the widened strap portions of the mufiler 'behind the front plate, said front plate being of such width and said straps of such length that when the straps are secured behind the front plate, the front plate only appears when worn by the user.
