The primary object of my invention is to provide an amusement device having the form of a startlingly grotesque animal adapted to run along the floor, or the like, and 'e'rnit a peculiar sound.

Another object is to provide a toy of the type and for the purpose above specified which "involves few parts, is inexpensive to manufacture, and will not readily get out of order.

To the accomplishment of the above and subordinate objects presently appearing, a pre ferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and defined in the claim appended hereto.

Reference being had to the drawings by numerals, my improved toy, as shown, comprises a body I substantially bell shaped in vertical section and somewhat eliptical in horizontal section and an elongated head 2 extending forwardly from what constitutes the front of the body I and With its lower side in horizontal alignment with the lower edge 3 of the body. Preferably, both the body and head are hollow. The head 2 may be provided in any suitable manner with eyes 4 and with long pointed cars 5. The head 2 is designed t-o simulate an elongated mouse head. The described shape of the body I imparts to the same a humped-back appearance which, together with the described head 2, resu1t s in a strikingly grotesque form of animal.

A pair of small rear wheels, 6 support the body I adjacent to the rear end thereof and are suitably mounted Within said body on a cross rod i' having its ends suitably journaled in the sides of the body. Preferably only one of the wheels 6 'is fast on the rod 'I to faoilitate the turning of the body l. A single small front wheel 8 supports the -body I in the rear of the head 2 and which is rotatably mounted in a yoke 9 having a crimped disc-like crown li) opposed to a central similar crimped part 'II 'on a cross `bar I2 suitably Secured -at its ends to 'the sides of i the body I. The other end IE of the spring M is suitably anchored to a cross rod I'I having its ends suitably fixed in said sides of said body. A belt and pulley connection I8 extends between the drive shaft IS and the rod 'I on one side of the spring I4. A key I9 is provided for one end of the drive shaft I5 for winding up the spring Ili by turning of said shaft.

A noise making device is provided in the body I, in the form of a whistle 2D, of any suitable form, extended through and fixed in a cross bar 2I suitably secured in the body I forwardly of the drive shaft I5. The whistle 20 has suitably connected therewith, in the rear of the same, a bulb 22 of rubber, or the like, and adapted for compression to blow the whistle. A bulb compressing ptman 23 is suitably connected at one end as represented at 24, to the bulb 22 so as to compress said bulb when the ptman 23 is moved endwise in one direction. A crank 24 on the drive shaft IB, on the side of the spring Ill opposite the belt and pulley connection I8, is connected to the other end of the ptman 23. The ptman 23 is slidably extended through a slot 25 in a cross bar 26 in the body I and which is suitably fixed to the sides of the body. The slot 25 and bar 26 function to prevent undue side play of the ptman 23. by guiding the same.

A fiexible tube 21 extends forwardly from the whistle 20 into the snout 28 of the head 2 with its front end secured in the snout by a cross pin 29. The tube 21 is designed to discharge air from the whistle 20 out of the snout 28.

When the described toy is wound up, by winding of the spring M, and placed on the fioor, or the like, the drive shaft IS is rotated in the proper direction by said spring to drive the rod 'I and the rear wheels ti in the proper direction to propel the body I forwardly. By turning the front Wheel 8 and yoke 9 on the pivot I3 said wheel may be set so as to cause the body I to travel in :a circle or a straight path as desired. Rotation of the drive shaft 15 by the spring M causes the crank 24 to reciprccate the pitman 23. Reciprocation of the pitman 23 operates the bulb 22 to blow the Whistle 20 intermittently, in a manner Which Will be clear. Thus the top emits an intermittent sound as it travels forwardly. The tube 21 discharges air from the Whistle 20 intermittently out of the snout 28 and such air, by blowing dust from in front of the snout, 28 creates the impression that the animal is snorting. The compression of the bulb 22.intermittent1y retards reciprocation of the pitman 23 and thereby intermittentiy retards travel of the toy, in a manner which is clear. This creates the impression that the animal is hesitating in its progress over the floor.

All parts of the described toy, except the spring [4, bulb 22, and tube 21 may be formed of thin sheet metal or similar nexpensive metal so that the cost of production of the toy is comparatively small.

The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.

Manifestly, the invention, as defined, is susceptible of modification Without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications, as fall Within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is:

A toy for rolling over a floor comprising a hollow animal body and head, a front and rear wheels for supporting said body, means in said body for operating one of the rear wheels comprising a crank shaft and a spring motor for operating the shaft, a pitman to Which said crank is operatively Connected, and a noise making device in said body operative intermittently by said pitman, said device being operative by air under pressure passing through the same, said head having an open snout end and being supported by said body With said front wheel extending upwardly into the same Whereby said head is adapted to be disposed close to the fioor, and a tube extending from said device into said head to said snout end for discharging air from the device out of said snout end onto the floor to intermittently stir up dust on the floor and create the illusion that the animal is snortng.
