, It has beenfound-in the-past that much difii- I culty and danger has been encountered in'wash- "ing the exterior of windows; particularly inin- 'soneXteriorly-of said window and yet permit the free use of both hands in accomplishing the work to be done.

It is apparent that the device may have many other uses than the one specifically described above and all areincluded in this invention.

Referring'more particularly to thedrawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the several views, the

device 'embodyingthe invention comprises a main "frame I' formed'preferably of tubular material ammo such as piping which is bent at 2 to form a frame support for the back rest 3 and to form depending supporting portions 4. The bent portion 2 is flattened and slotted at 5 as shown in Fig. III to receive the angled peripheral lip B of the back rest 3. The said back rest is secured to the bent portion 2 by rivets of like means I which extend through aligned openings formed in said bent portion and the peripheral lip 6. The lower peripheral lip portion 6 is bent to lie substantially parallel with the plane of the back rest 3 and forms attaching means for receiving one end of a flexible seat or sling 8 formed of canvas, leather or any other suitable material. The said end is connected to the attaching means by rivets or the like 9 which extend through aligned openings in the lower end of the back rest and the parallel lip portion 6. To aid in holding the flexible material in position between said back rest and adjacent parallel lip-portion 6 there is provided a section of fiat bar material Ill about which the end of the seat or sling is wrapped. The said bar material is held in place by the rivets 9, as shownin Fig. III.

The depending portions 4' are provided with bent lower ends H for engaging the means to which the device is attached such as the outer side wall 'of the house. To prevent scratching or otherwise injuring the said wall the ends are provided with a cushion covering it such as rubber tub=- ing, leather, cloth, cork or other suitable means.

To aid in supporting the said depending portions 4 in definite spaced relation and to provide attaching means for the opposite end of the flexible seat or sling 8 there is provided a cross support l3 attached by rivets, bolts or other means 28 adjacent the lower bent ends ll of the depending portions 4. To aid in supporting the device in position of use there is provided a pair of arms 84 pivotally attached at l5 by bolts, rivets or other means to the side frame 2 of the back rest 3. The said arms M are formed preferably of tubular stock such as pieces of piping which are flattened at their attaching ends l5 and split adjacent their opposite ends [6 as shown in Figures IV and V. The said split ends 16 are flared outwardly at I! and are each provided with an opening l8 which communicates with the bottom of the split end portions IS. The said openings provide attaching means for receiving a spacing bar it. The said bar has hook shaped gripping ends 29 formed thereon for gripping the means to which the device is attached, as for example the sill of a window, as shown'in Fig. I. The hook shaped ends 20 are adapted to be placed through the opening I8 in each of the arms l4 and are adapted'to be sealed in the split end portions It by closing the outwardly flared portions H, as shown in Fig. IV. The hook shaped gripping ends 20 are covered with rubber tubing, felt, leather or any suitable cushion means 2|.

The flexible seat or sling 8 is folded-over and attached to the spacing bar lfi by stitchings or any suitable means 22 to form the seat portion 23 and a flexible connecting portion 24 is provided between the said spacing bar I!) and lower cross support l3.

In Fig. II there is shown a slight modification wherein the arms M are eliminated and the seat portion 29 'forms the means for supporting the back rest portion 30 during the use of the device.

A spacing bar 3| of a shape similar to the bar I9 is attached to the flexible seat or sling 29 in a similar manner to that described for the bar 19 and is provided with the usual hook shaped ends 32 for gripping the sill or means to which the device is attached- The remaining par-ts and structure of the device is similar in detail to the device shown and described above in Fig. I. The only difference between this modification and the first described =form is the elimination of the side arms Attention is directed to .the fact that the hook slhaped gripping portions 20 and 32 as well as the bent ends H are shaped to provide a broad contact bearing surface and are covered with suitable means such as rubber, cork, felt, leather or other means, which will form friction bearing means to aid in preventing the device from slipping during the use thereof.

In use, the hook shaped ends 20 or 32 are first attached to the sill of the window and'the back rest is extended outwardly of the window and allowed to settle in position with the lower connecting portion 24 or 33 overlying the sill and the bent ends H or 34 engaging the side wall of the house. The device is then ready for use and is adapted to provide comfortable and safe means on which a person may be supported and permitted use of both hands in accomplishing the work to be done.

Although applicant has shown and described the use of tubular material it is to be understood that any suitable type of material may be used.

In Fig. VI there is illustrated a further modified form of the invention. In this figure the frame 35 is provided with a relatively narrow back member 36. The back 36 is secured to the adjacent portion of the frame throughout its cont-our edges 31, as shown in Fig/XI, as by welding, soldering or the like.

The side arms 38 are respectively pivotally secured to the frame 35 as by bolts, rivets or the like 39 and are provided with an integral cross or tie portion 40 formed by bending the arms at 41.

The'cross or tie portion, in this instance, forms the means to which the adjacent end of the seat or sling 42 is attached. The attachment is made by folding'the end over the cross or tie portion and stitching the superimposed portions together. If desired, the said superimposed portions may be cemented or adhesively joined with each other by a layer of suitable cement. or adhesive 42, as shown in Fig. IX or may be both cemented and stitched if desired, as shown in said figure. The stitchings are illustrated at 43. The seat or sling extends over a cross bar 44 and is provided with superimposed portions 45 and 46 which are joined with each other as'by a line of stitchings or the like 41. The seat or sling 42 then extends downwardly and has its lower end attached to a bar 48 in a manner similar to the end attached to the cross or tie member 40.

The cross bar 44 is attached adjacent the forward ends of the arms 38 by rivets or the like 49 and the said ends are each provided with a hook shaped portion 50 to hook over the window sill or The said ends are each covered with cushion means such as rubber, leather or the like. 1. seat of collapsible flexible sheet material secured adjacent one end thereof to said base and having a portion secured to the means, extending between the arms adjacent thehook-like portions and means extending between said arms and the parts of the depending side portions below the pivots for restricting the outward pivotal'movement of said arms and said depending portions with respect to each other, said last named means being collapsible for permitting the arms to be folded in adjacent compact relation with the depending portions when the device is not in use.

5. A device of the character described comprising a pair of main support members formed rigid throughout the length thereof and pivotally connected with each other so as to permit folding of one of said members into adjacent compact relation with the other, one of said members having hook-like portions located adjacent the forward 'end thereof and the other of said members having a bearing portion located adjacent the lower end thereof, means extending between said members intermediate the ends thereof for restricting the outward pivotal movement of said members relative to each other, said last-named means being collapsible for permitting said members to be folded in adjacent compact relation with each other while the various members and means are retained in their initial assembled relation with each other, one of said members having tie means extending transversely intermediate said member and a seat having a forward end portion secured to said main support members adjacent said hook-like portions and having a portion overlying the tie means and arranged to permit said main support members and said seat to be folded into compact relation with each other.

A device of the character described comprising a pair of main support members formed rigid throughout the length thereof and pivotally connected with each other so as to permit folding of one of said members into adjacent compact relation with the other, one of said members having hook-like portions located adjacent the forward end thereof and the other of said members having a bearing portion located adjacent the lower end thereof, means extending between said members intermediate the ends thereof for restricting the outward pivotal movement of said members relative to each other, said last-named means comprising two sections pivotally connected to each other adjacent one of their respective ends and having their opposed ends pivotally connected one to each of the respective main support members and being collapsible for permitting said members to be folded in adjacent compact relation with each other, one of said members having tie means extending transversely intermediate said member and a seat having a forward end portion secured to said main support members adjacent said hook-like portions and having a portion overlying the tie means and arranged to permit said main support members and said seat to be folded into compact relation with each other.

7. A device of the character described comprising a pair of main support members formed rigid throughout the length thereof and pivotally connected with each other adjacent one end thereof so as to permit folding of one of said members into adjacent compact relation with'the other, one of said members having hook-like portions located adjacent the forward end thereof and the other of said members having a bearing portion located adjacent the lower end thereof, means extending between said members intermediate the ends thereof at a location spaced from the pivot for restricting the outward pivotal movement of said members relative to each other, said last-named means being collapsible for permitting said members tobe folded in adjacent compact relation with each other while the various members and means are retained in their initial assembled relation with each other, one of said members having rigid tie means extending transversely intermediate said member and a seat having a forward end portion assembled with said main support members adjacent said'hooklike portions and having a portion overlying the tie means and arranged to permit said main support members and seat to be folded into compact relation with each other.
