This invention relates to sharpening devices for use in sharpening cutting tools. More ispecifically, the invention resides in the provision Iof a hand ltool particularly designed to facilitate the sharpening of scissors.
The Sharpener of the invention is in the form of a simply constructed and inexpensive device which may be employed Ifor sharpening the cutting edges of the blades of a scissors without requiring any appreciable degree of skill on the part of the user.
The invention, together with its objects and advantages, will be best appreciated from the following detailed description read in reference to the accompanying drawing, in which i-s illustrated what is presently considered a preferred embodiment of the invention, and wherein;

Figure 2. is a side edge elevational view of the Sharpener;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, and illustrating an application of the invention, the blades of the scissors being shown in cross section; and
Figures 4 and 5 are cross-sectional views t-aken substantially on lines 4-4 and 5-5 respectively of Figure l.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the reference numeral 5 indicates generally a handle and shank assembly forming part of the sharpener. This assembly 5 is preferably formed from a single sheet of suitable material cut, shaped and dimensioned to -provide relatively large end portions forming hand grips E and a relatively narrow intermediate connecting shank portion l. At opposite edges of the shank yportion 'I there are formed, integral therewith, angular tool guides 8. These guides 8 'are disposed in the proximity of the points where the respective opposite ends of vshank 'l merge with the grips S. Further, and as shown, the guides 8 are laterally displaced with respect to one another as and i or a purpose as will presently be made clear.
Also as an integral part of the structure, there are formed, as shown, clips 9 that extend inwardly from opposite edges of the handle assembly near the inner ends of the grips 6. These clips 9 function in a manner clearly shown to releasably retain in position an abradng element Il).
The free ends of the clips 9 are apertured to 2 regis-ter with apertures provided in the grip portion 6 for accommodating set screws H. Obviously by Itightening up on the set screws II, the
clips 9 are drawn into positive engagement with the abrading element lll for effectively securing the latter in the desired position.
In the present instance, the abrading element Il] is shown as being in the form `of a cylindrical tempered piece of steel having on the periphery thereof an abrasive or file cut surface.
The manner of using the Sharpener to provide new cutting surfaces for the blades of a scissors is thought to be self-apparent upon reference to Figure 3. However, it may be briefly explained that when so using the tool, the operator with one hand grasping a selected Ihand -grip E, positions the shank portion 'l of the tool between the blades l2 of the scissors. With the blades then closed into contact with the periphery of the abrading element I0, the entire tool assembly is reciprocated relative to, and lengthwise of, the blades of the scissors. In connection Iwith the foregoing, it will be noted that the guides 8 laterally engage the blades l2, and the abrading element Ill, being secured at the angle shown, contacts the beveled cutting edges of the blades l2 in complete conformity with the angle of the :cutting edges. Thus, in using this device for sharpening the scissors, the angle of the cutting edge of the blades of the scissors is maintained from heel to point `of the respective blades with a resultant keen edge for the blades throughout their respective working or effec-tive cutting edges.
As the working surface of the abrading element l0 becomes worn, or' if for any reason another porti-on of the surface is desired, the screws II may be loosened after which the element l0 is then rotated about its longitudinal axis or shifted in the ydirection of its length to bring a selected portion of its working surface into proper position with respect to the guides 8 for subsequent use. When the desired adjustment has been made, the screws ll are then ltightened for securing the element IB in `the selected position 'of adjustment.
It will be further noted that the element l!) is positioned diagonally with respect to the longitudinal dimensions Kof the shank 'l and thus is set yon an angle substantially conforming t-o the angle of the cutting edges of the scissors. This positioning of the Aabrading element is eiected without requiring forethought on the part of the user, thus particularly adapting this tool to use iby persons not especially skilled in the art -of tool grinding or sharpening.
Although I have herein described a preferred form of the invention, I am aware that changes may be made within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
What I Iclaim is:
1. A Sharpener comprising `a handle having 'a pair of hand grips and a narrow intermediate 4shank connecting Isaid grips, tool lguides at yopposite edges of the shank and `disposed laterally .with respect -to each other, and an abrasive element secured to the shank in a position diagonal with respect to the longitudinal dimensions of the shank and intermediate the tool guides.
2. A Sharpener comprising a handle embodying a pair of end hand grips and 'an intermediate shank portion. tool guides at opposite edges of the shank and disposed laterally with respect to each other, Iclips mounted on Isaid handle, and
a file secured :by the clips `diagonally across the 25 shank. Y
