Description
F. A. WAGNER VENDING MACHINE Filed y 1946 l mu FIG I HHJIHIIIIIIII II llllllllllllllHIHHlll m m mm V A K. N A R F Patented June 29, 1948 Wagner,- vaneeiliwmbriflsh Golumbit, Eanade thereto, I prefer to edfim'plish as mil-ewe:
e iaims: (cum-e51 A pointed cam 50 on the shaft 46 presses against the cam follower 52 mounted on the spring 54, which in turn is supported on the shaft 30. This combination comprises a two-position indexing mechanism between the link 42 and 44, to hold them semi-rigid in the extended position of Fig. 2, or to hold and facilitate their return to the cooked position shown in dashed lines in Fig. 1. A separable cross bar 45 between the outer ends of links 44, 44, carries paper-engaging means, such as pins 41, which impale the papers or magazines being dispensed, and permit them to be lifted up- 1 ward to hurdle lip I4 and to briefly accelerate the downward travel of such newspapers into the The ends of bar 45 operate as cam followers with.
relation to the camming surface 60 mounted rigid with the casing I4. The-bar ends press against surface 60 causing-the links 42 and 44tobe extended from the cooked position to the substantially straight, or aligned-position. I consider the links 42 and 44 as comprising an articulated arm having a mid-joint and including a two-position indexing, means .to establish either a cooked or extended position.
v Metiiod'of operation When afcustomer places a coin in a latching position of the coin slide3B'so that pressure applied'to the slider 36 can apply, in turn, pressure upon the link 34, the shaft 34, as it'appears inFig. 1, is caused to rotate in a clockwise direction about its axis and to cause link 42 to swing downward.. Because of :the engagement of the ends of bar 45 with the camming surface .60, the links 42 and 44 will be urged into substantial alignment and cooking action of the indexing mechanism, comprising cam 50 and follower 52, will be overcome. The cam 50 is turned relative the follower,
and then snaps to hold the articulated 'arm inthe position. of Fig.2. The coin will fallout of the slide 38 into the hopper 44.
Next, the customer pulls back'on the slider 36,
causing shaft and arm 42, 44 to turn in a counterclockwise direction. Undersuch circumstances, bar 'swings upward'and the paper-engaging pins 41 impale themselves in the first copy of the newspaper groupresting upon shelf l2, and tend to lift the same. As the first copy is raised above the edgeof lip I4, the presser plate |6, operated by the spring IB; urges the following group of papers forward' Such action applies pressure on the bar 45 and links '44, 44. Since the links 42 continue in their counter-clockwise movement, and since additional weight will be applied to the bar 45 and the pins 41, the restraining action of cam and follower 52 is overcome. In due course, the links 42 and 44'cock-t'o the solid-line position of Fig. 1. This action is rapid and of a snap-retracting nature; It tends to snap the pins 41 out of the paper, and at the sametime to apply a slight downward directing pressure against the impaled paper, so that it will be forcefully directed toward the'c hute between walls22 and 24. Since chamber 10, which houses the dispensing mechanism is smaller than the chamber 12, in which the papers are positioned when thedispensed copy hurdles the stop l4, its ends come against wall faces 14 that merge with wall 24 therebelo'w. The coin slide is again in position to receive a coin. The paper falls down againstfthe 4 stop 26 at the bottom end of the paper chute, where it can be easily grasped by a purchaser.
While I have shown and described particular embodiments of my invention, it will occur to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the invention, and I, therefore, aim in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of myinvention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a vending machine for newspapers and the like, wherein the papers are positioned erect in juxtaposition with the fold downward, and are urged toward a stop active upon the lower folded edges, and over which the newspaper must be caused to hurdle: a pivot shaft in front and parallel to said papers, an articulated arm rigid on said shaft and directed generally toward said papers and comprising a pair of links, paper-engaging means carried by said arm, a two-position indexing mechanism between said links, lever means to rotate said shaft and swing said arm when the links are in substantial alignment toward said papers and upward, the forward urgence on said papers serving to operate the indexing mechanism to break the articulated arm, means to move the arm downward, and guide means to substantially realign said links and to reversibly operate the indexing mechanism.
2. In avending machine for newspapers and the like, wherein the papers are positioned erect in juxtaposition with the fold downward, and are urged toward a stop active upon the lower folded edges, and over which the newspaper must be caused to hurdle: an articulated arm mounted in frontof said papers to swing and comprising a pair of links, paper-impaling means carried by said arm, a two-position indexing mechanism between said links, means to swing said arm when the links are in substantial alignment toward said papers-and upward, the forward urgence on said papers serving to operate the indexing mechanism to break the articulated arm, means to move the arm downward, and guide means to substantially realign said links and to reversibly operate the indexing mechanism.
3. In a vending machine for newspapers and the like, wherein the papers are positioned erect in juxtaposition with the fold downward, and are urged toward a stop active upon the lower folded edges, and over which the newspaper must be caused to hurdle: an articulated arm mounted in front of said papers to swing and comprising a pair of links, paper engaging means carried by said arm, a two-position resilient cam-and-follower indexing mechanism between said links. means to swing said arm when the links are in substantial alignment toward said papers and upward, the forward urgence on said papers serving to operate the indexing mechanism to break the articulated arm, means to move the arm downward, and guide means to substantially realign said links and to reversibly operate the indexing mechanism.
4. In a vending machine for newspapers and the like, wherein the papers are positioned erect in juxtaposition with the fold downward, and are urged toward a stop active upon the lower folded edges, and over which the newspaper must be caused to hurdle: an articulated arm mounted,
in front of said papers to swing and com rising a pair of links, paper-engaging means carried by said arm, a two-position indexing mechanism between said links, means to swing said arm when 5 ,the links are in substantial alignment toward said REFERENCES CITED papers and upward the forward urgence on Sam The following references are of record in the papers serving to operate the indexing mechanism to break the articulated arm, means to me of this patent move the arm downward, and guide means to 5 UNITED STATES PATENTS substantially realign said links and to reversibly Number Name Date op r te the index mechanism. 963,245 Parkhurst July 5 1910 FRANK A. WAGNER.
