Claims. (01. 177-411) This invention relates to improvements in distributor timing devices. It is an object of the invention to provide such a device both forsetting the points on distributors so that the "dwell period, that is the angular distance through which the distributor shaft turns while each set of points is in contact, is correct, and for settin the rotary position of the contact disc in the distributor so that the contacts are made by the points in properly timed relation to the movement of the engine the firing of which is controlled by the distributor. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a timing device for distributors including a base on which a distributor is mounted, a rotary pin for engaging and turning the distributor shaft, and electric means which register throughout the period that one set of points in the distributor are in contact so that the dwell period may be quickly and accurately adjusted.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a timing device for distributors wherein means are provided for halting rotation of the distributor shaft at the angular position at which contact should be made by one set of points at which time the electric means commences to register, so that the rotary disc on which the points in the distributor are mounted may be correctly positioned.
Having thus briefly and broadly stated some of the objects and advantages of the invention we will now describe it in detail with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the invention, partly in section, showing a distributor mounted thereon.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the invention.
Figures 3 and 4 are sections on the lines 3-3 and 4-4 respectively of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is an inverted plan view.
Figure 6 is a wiring diagram also showing the points on a distributor disc.
Figure 7 is a detail showing a plan view of the rotary pin and its annular flange.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base formed through the upper side of which is a vertical bore 2 to receive a sleeve 3 which is mounted therein for rotation. In threaded engagement with the base I is a horizontal screw 4 which, whentightened, engages the outer periphery of the sleeve 3 and holds the latter im-, movable. Extending from the upper outer face of the sleeve around a portion of its circumference is an arcuate flange 5 having a scale 5a thereonshowing the degrees about the axis of the sleeve. Rotatably supported in the said sleeve is a pin 6 and formed across the upper face of the latter is an eccentric slot I: and also integral with the said pin and projecting from the latter intermediately of its height and above the arcuate flange 5 is an annular flange 8 having a radial slot 9 formed in its outer periphery and a plurality of uniformly spaced indicating marks 8a thereon. The number of marks should correspond to the number of cylinders in the engine in connection with which the distributor to be set by the device is employed. Mounted for rotation in the base I is a horizontal cam shaft ill having an annular groove ll formed around its periphery to receive a spring pressed ball l2 by which the said shaft is held against axial movement and at diiierent rotary positions. The exposed extremities of the shaft I0 may be knurled so that it may be more readily turned by hand, and formed on the shaft l0 and positioned beneath the pin 6 is a cam I3 50 that by rotation of the said shaft the pin is lifted. Mounted on the upper face of the base I is a supporting block l4 having projections l5 thereon extending from its upper face. Mounted for movement in the base I along a, path radial to the axis of its bore 2 is a latch l6 adapted to engage the radial slot 9 and hold the pin 6 against rotation.
Formed in the outer side of the base I is a cavity l1 and extending from the latter through the said base is a threaded opening to receive a light bulb l8. Supported beneath the base by opposed resilient clips i9 is a battery 20. Extending from one 01 the clips, both or which are suitably insulated from the base I, is a lead 2! having a clip 22 at its outer extremity, and con nected to the other clip I9 is a lead 24 which extends to a contact 25 which engages the outer extremity of the stem of the light bulb l8.
In order to set the points of a distributor A, the latter is first mounted on the block l4 where it is engaged and held immovable by the projections l5 some of which engage conventional op nings formed through the base of the said distributor. The cam shaft I0 is turned until the pin 6 has been raised to the required height for its slot I to engage a downwardly projecting tongue formed on the lower extremity of the distributor shaft C. Before setting one pair of points, provided the distributor is one havin more than one pair, the other pair of points are suitably insulated from one another as by the insertion of a piece of paper D (Figure 6) between them. Contact between the points E and F- the latter being grounded on the distributor-is made and broken by rotation of the cam G on the distributor shaft C which actuates the arm H and thus the point E. During the period that the points E and F are in contact an electric circuit is completed through the battery 20, the light bulb l8, the lead 2|, clip 22, the wire J to the insulated contact K and the arm H to the point E and thus to the point F which is grounded as also is one side of the light bulb [8, thus the latter is illuminated. However as soon as contact between the points E and F is broken the circuit is interrupted and the light is extinguished since current cannot pass to ground through the distributor condenser L.
The distributor A and the pin 6 and annular flange 8 are rotated until acontact is made between the points E and F and the bulbis first illuminated. Then the arcuate flange is turned until the zero graduation thereon registers with one of the indicating marks M on the flange 8.
The screw 4 is tightened to hold the flange 5 immovable. Then the flange 8 and with it the distributor A are rotated. If the points E and F are properly spaced, and the dwell period is correct, the bulb l8 will remain illuminated until the flange 8 has been turned through a predetermined angle, say 22% degrees; this angular distance may of course be readily and accurately checked by the position of the indicating mark 811 relative to the scale 511. If the bulb does not remain illuminated through the desired angular movement then the points mustbe adiusted in the conventional manner until the desired dwell period is obtained. Subsequently the insulation D is removed from between the points E' and F and inserted between the points already set so that the other set of points may be similarly adjusted and checked.
It is also necessary to check the commencement or termination of the contact periods of the points relative to the rotary position of the distributor shaft 0. It is for that reason that the tical pin mounted for rotation in the base having means thereon for engaging the lower extremity of a shaft in the distributor for rotation with the pin, means in said base for adjusting the height of the vertical pin relative to the distributor shaft, an annular flange integral with the pin and extending around the latter, said flange having spaced indicatin marks thereon, a second flange mounted for rotation. coaxially. with the pin and having graduations thereon to register with the indicating marks, means for holding the second flange immovable, a, power source, a lamp bulb mounted on the base and having. one. terminal grounded thereon, a lead connecting the other lamp terminal to one side of the power source, another lead extending from the other side of the power source, means on said other lead for attachment to a wire in the distributor connected. to a point in the latter insulated from said distributor whereby when said point is moved into contact with a .second point grounded on the distributor a circuit is completed and the lamp bulb is illuminated.
2. A distributor timing device including a base, a vertical pin mounted for rotation therein having means thereon for engaging the lower ex tremity of a shaft of a distributor and turning said shaft with said pin, means in said base for vertically adjusting said pin relative to the distributor shaft, means on the base for supporting the distributor and holding it immovable while upper face of the pin '6 is transversely and eccentrically slotted at I in the same manner as the end of the shaft to which the tongue B of the distributor shaft is subsequently connected when in position on a motor. Thus the rotary position of the pin 6 and the distributor shaft are maintained so that the contacts will be made and the firing take place at the pro er times. If the retary position of the disc N in the distributor is correct the latch IE will engage the radial slot 9 in the annular flange 8 Just as the light bulb I8 lights or goes out according to the direction in which the distributor shaft is being turned. If this condition does not obtain the disc N must be turned in the conventional manner in the distributor until it does exist. Then the points E and F' (and E and F) will make and break correctly in relation to the operation of the motor to which the distributor is to be applied. In order that this will occur the slot 9 in the annular flange 8 is positioned in advance of one of the indicating marks 8a an angular distance equal to the desired length of dwell for which the points are set.
While in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that alterations and modiflcations maybe made therein provided they fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What we claim is:
1. A distributor timin device including a base, means on the base for supporting a distributor thereon and holding the latter immovable, a verthe shaft is turned, a flange integral with and extending around the pin having spaced indicating marks thereon, a second flange rotatably mounted around the pin having graduations thereon to register with the indicating marks, means for holding the last named flange immovable, an electric battery mounted on the base, a lamp bulb mounted on the base having one terminal grounded on the latter, a lead connecting the other lamp terminal with one side of the battery, another lead extending from-the other side of the battery, means on saidother lead for attachment to a wire in the distributor connected to a. point therein insulated from said distributor whereby when said point is moved into contact with a second point grounded on the distributor a circuit is completed and the lamp is lit.
3. A distributor timing device including a base, a vertical pin mounted for rotation therein having means thereon for engaging the lower extremity of a shaft in a distributor and turning said shaft with said pin, a horizontal shaft in said base having cam means thereon for engaging and vertically adjusting said pin relative to the distributor shaft, means on the base for supporting the distributor and holding it immovable when the shaft is turned, a flange integral with and extending around the pin having spaced indicating marks thereon, a bushing rotatably mounted in the base in which said vertical pin is rotatably supported, a second flange integral with the bushing and extending outwardly therefrom having graduations thereon to register with said indicating marks, means for holding said bushing immovable, a battery mounted on the base, a light bulb mountedon the base and hav-- ing one terminal grounded thereon, a lead connecting the other light bulb terminal with one side of the battery. another lead extending from the other side of the battery, means on said other lead for attachment to a wire in the distributor connected to a point therein and insulated therefrom whereby when said point is moved into contact with -a second point grounded on the distributor a. circuit is completed and the light bulb is lit.
4. A distributor timing device including a base,
1 a vertical pin mounted for rotating therein having means thereonfor engaging the lower extremity of a shaft in a distributor, cam means in saidbase for adjusting the height of the vertical pin to move it into engagement with the shaft, whereby rotation of the pin turns said shaft, means on the base for supporting the distributor and holding it immovable when theshaft is turned. a flange integral with and extending around the pin having spaced indicating marks thereon. a second flange rotatably mounted around the pin having graduations thereon to register with the indicating marks, means for holding the second flange immovable, a battery mounted on the base, a light bulb. mounted on the base and having one terminal grounded thereon, a, lead connecting the 6 shaft, means on the base for supporting the distributor and holding it immovable when the shaft is turned, a flange integral with and extending around the pin having indicating marks thereon, a second flange rotatably mounted around the pin having graduations thereon to register with the indicating marks, means for holding said second flange immovable, means mounted for movement on the base for engaging the first flange and holding it and the pin immovable, a battery mounted on the base, a light bulb mounted on the base and having one terminal grounded thereon, a lead connecting the other light bulb terminal with one side of the battery, another lead extending'from the other side of the battery, means on said other lead for attachment to a wire in the distributor connected to a point therein, said ,point' being insulated from said distributor ing slotted means thereon for engaging the lower 30 extremity of a shaft in a distributor and turnin said shaft with said pin, a rotatable cam shaft in said base having cam meansithereon for engagin and adjusting said pin relative to" the distributor whereby when said point is moved into contact with a second point grounded on said distributor a circuit is completed and the light bulb is illuminated.
