Description

Jan. 18, 1 944. s, LANDAU 2,339,341
UNDERGARMENT I Filed March 21, 1942 INVENTOR. Sam Landau,
* ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 18, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE UNDERGARMENT Sam Landau, New York, N. Y.
Application March 21, 1942, Serial No. 435,674
2 Claims.
My invention relates to womens undergarments and, more particularly, to such garments to be worn under trousers or slacks.
The main object of the invention is to provide an undergarment of this character, whether it be a chemise, a slip, or a step-in, with a crotch portion which allows adjustments both in the length of the garment down to the crotch and in the width of the openings for the wearers thighs. Another object is to provide a garment of this character which can fulfill the combined functions of a bandeau or brassiere, and of a chemise or slip, and which may be worn under trousers or slacks without the disadvantage of unsightly bulges. Another object is to allow the garment to be adjusted in length between the shoulders and the crotch as to avoid binding or pulling at the crotch or at the shoulders, especially while exercising. Other objects will become apparent from the specification which follows and from the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front view of a garment embodying the present invention.
Figures 2 and 3, respectively, are front and back views of the lower portion of the garment shown in Figure l, with the flaps forming the crotch portion disconnected.
Figure 4 is a cross section taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a bottom view of the garment shown in Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a similar view but for a difierent position of the overlapping flaps of the crotch portion.
Referring to the figures in detail, I is the main body portion of a garment embodying my invention, shown here as a combination bandeau and step-in. Shoulder straps 2 are secured to the bandeau 3. The length of these shoulder straps may be varied by any of the well known methods, such, for instance, as the adjustable buckle 4. The main body portion I (here shown as a step-in) has free edges 5, 5, curved to conform to the general configuration of a woman's thigh. When the garment is worn, these free edges 5, 5, encircle the wearers thighs. Intermediate the free edges 5, 5, is a crotch portion consisting of a front flap 6 and a back flap I, secured to the main body portion I, as by stitching. The flaps 6, I, in so far as they extend below the main body portion, are of substantially triangular shape. To form the crotch, these flaps are connected by engaging some of the buttons 8', 8", 8", with some of the buttonholes 9', 9", 9', this engagement being vertically adjustable by varying the relative positions of the overlapping flaps. The converging sides of the flaps 6 and 1 below the main body portion l are preferably slightly curved and form continuations of the free edges 5, 5.
It will be noted that when the button 8 engages the buttonhole 9, as in Figure 5, the periphery of the thigh encircling edge 5 is of minimum length, while this periphery is at its maximum length when the buttons are engaged as in Figure 6. Naturally, there may be more than three buttons and corresponding buttonholes to engage one another so as to give a wider degree of variation to the length of the thigh encircling free edges 5, 5. Also, their engagement may be made by means other than shown. It will also be noted that in changing the relative positions of the overlapping flaps, the length of the garment from the shoulders down to the crotch is also varied. It should be further observed that the adjustability of the shoulder straps 2 serves to compensate for any discrepancy between stature and size of thighs. Thus, when the wearers thighs are comparatively small and the arrangement shown in Figure 5 is used, but the wearers stature is comparatively great, the length of the garment between the shoulders and th crotch is increased by a proper manipulation of the buckle 4, to avoid binding or pulling at the crotch. Likewise, if the wearers thigh are comparatively big, but the stature is small in comparison, the arrangement shown in Figure 6 is used and the shoulder straps 2 are reduced in length to reduce the length of the garment down to the crotch. Thus, all binding and pulling either at the crotch or at the shoulders is avoided as well as undue looseness of the garment. The garment is cut to cling closely to the wearers body, especially around the thighs, so that no unsightly bulges take place when the garment is worn under trousers or slacks.
Of course, the invention is not restricted to the specific garment illustrated in the drawing, 1. e., to a combination of a bandeau and step-in, but may be applied to many another style of undergarment designed to be worn under trousers or slacks.
It should be kept in mind that the specific cases and figures shown serve merely as illustrations of the manner in which the invention is applied and that'many modifications would naturally suggest themselves to those versed in the art without in any way departing from the principle and purpose of the present invention.
I claim:
1. A womans undergarment comprising a main body portion having free edges curved to conform to the general configuration of a womans thighs and adapted to encircle the thighs of the wearer, and crotch portions intermediate said free edges tapering away from said main body portion in lines curved to form continuations of said free edge curves, and means detachably connecting said crotch portions in variously overlapping positions, said curve continuations conforming to the configuration of the thighs of thewearer for all of said overlapping positions.
2. A Woman's undergarment comprising a main body portion having shoulder straps at the top and free edges at the bottom curved to conform to the general configuration of a womans thighs and adapted to encircle the thighs of the wearer, and. crotch portions intermediate said free edges tapering away from said main body portion in lines curved to form continuations of said free edge curves, means detachably connecting said crotch portions in variously overlapping positions, said curve continuations conformin to the configuration of the thighs of the wearer for all of said overlapping positions, and means causing said undergarment to fit the wearer's thighs irrespectively of the wearers stature by adjusting the length of said shoulder straps to compensate for any discrepancy between the stature and the size of the thighs of the wearer.
