rlhis invention relates to. anl improved stamping machine and is a division of my application, Serial No. 376,689, filed January 30, 1941.
One object of the invention is to provide a stamping machine employing improved locking mechanism for retaining the inking roll in the ink well pad with the right pressure to force the ink into the inking roll when the machine is in use and in lowered o-r retracted position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stamping machine wherein the locking mechanism is automatically oper-ated by shifting of the striking head.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character wherein the locking mechanism is contained' entirely within the frame.
Further objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.

The numeral I indicates in gener-al the frame of my improved stamping machine. The frame I is cast as a single unit. The frame I includes a work supporting surface 2 and a raised platform 3. The raised platform 3 is formed, at its inner end portion, with a shallow guide trough Il, which guide trough is formed with a curved rear end wall 5. Pairs of longitudinally spaced headed studs 6 are fixed to the upper surface of the platform- 3, near the trough 4, andv serve to mount the inking device removably on vthe frame, as will be set forth in more detail hereinafter.
Associated with the frame I is a striking head 'I which is of similar construction to that shown in my co-pending application, Serial No. 294,941. The striking head I carries a die plate frame '8 on which is mounted a die plate 9.
The striking head I isconnected to the frame I by pairs of connecting links Ill and II. The links of the pair of links I have their lower ends fixed to a rock shaft I2 which is journaled in the frame I beneath the platform 3-. A rock shaft I-3 is journaled in the frame I beneath the surface 2 and swingingly mounts the links of the pairs of links I I on the frame. The correspond- (Cl. lOl-365) ing upper ends of the links are swingingly con'- necteol to the corners of the striking head by bolts Ill. A handle is connected' to one of the links of the pair of links II and is manually engaged when it is desired to swing the strikingl head l, with the frame 8 and die plate 9 ythereon, to operative position in engagement with work on the surface 2.
The striking head 'I is held in a raised. inop erative position by mechanism now to be briefly described. This mechanism includes a counter@ shaft i6 which has its Opposite ends journaied 'in bushings in the side walls of the frame I. The counter-shaft lli is disposed rearwardly of the rock shaft I2 in parallel spaced relation thereto and has levers E3 sldably mounted thereon. The levers I8, as will be seen, are mounted near the opposite ends of the shaft It and extend diametrically therethrough. Said levers are threaded at their corresponding outer ends and carry connecting yokes I9 at their corresponding inner ends. Compression springs 25J' surround the levers, between the threaded portions thereof and the counter-shaft It. Wing nuts 2| are screwed on the threaded portions of the levers and provide abutments for the outer ends of the springs. 29. The springs are confined between the nuts and the lever and will, therefore, urge said levers rearwardly. Elongated lugs 22 are mounted on the rock shaft I2 and are swingingly connected with the yokes I5 by means of a cross pin 23.
It will now be understood that, when the strik ing head l is swung forwardly, the shaft I2 will be rocked with the result that the lugs 22 will be swung upwardly. rlhis action will, of course, effect forward shifting of the levers I 8 transversely of the shaft It and compression of the springs 29. When pressure upon the head 1 is released, after a stamping or embossing opera tion, the springs E!! will return said head to raised inoperative position.
In order to spread ink uniformly on the surface of the die plate 9, I provide an inking roll 24. The ink roll per se is substantially identical in construction tc that shown in my co-pending application, Serial No. 324,175, led Marchv 15, 1940. The mounting structure for the inking roll is somewhat different and, accordingly, will now be described.
Mounted in the frame I near the center thereof and near the forward end of the platform 3, and at each side thereof, are guide sleeves 25. The guide sleeves extend throughout the entire height of the. frame I and are formed with ver'- tically extending opposed slots 26,
sudabi'ymounted in each of the sleeves is a supporting plunger 21. The supporting plungers 21 are recessed at their upper ends to receive the end trunnions of the inking roll 24. Spring latches may be mounted on the upper ends of the plungers to serve to retain the trunnions in place.
The plungers 21 are normally urged upwardly, to extend above the platform 3 a su-icient distance to engage the inking roll with the surface of the die plate 9 with the head in raised position, by coil springs 3D which are mounted in the sleeves 25 beneath said plungers. Connecting the plungers at their corresponding lower ends and within the frame is a latch rod 3|, said latch rod extending through the slots 25 and transversely of said frame and limiting the extent of upward travel of the plungers. The latch rod 3|, in addition to the function just mentioned, has another and more important pur- Dose which is that of retaining the inking roll and plungers in locked retracted position when the striking head is in operative position. The
mechanism which cooperates with the latch rod for accomplishing this purpose will now be described.
The latch mechanism includes a bracket 32 which is mounted on the under side of the platform 3 of the frame substantially medially thereof. The bracket 32 is relatively wide and provides support for a latch member 33, said latch member being pivotally mounted near the lower end of said bracket by means of a pin 34. The latch member 33 carries a latch plate 35, said -latch plate having a partially rolled end edge latch member in raised 36. Normally holding the inoperative position is a spring 31, said spring :extending between a point near the upper end of the bracket 32 and a point substantially medially :along the latch member.
. Mounted near the lower and rear edge of the bracket 32, by means of a pivot pin 38, is a trip-- ping lever 39, said tripping lever having a curved ,inner end portion 43 and a roller 4I, said roller projecting past the rear edge of the bracket and being engageable with a cam 42 which is fixed on the shaft I2 substantially medially of the length thereof. The cam 42 is so positioned that, when the connecting links I0 and I I are in parallel position, the thinnest portion of the cam will be presented to the roller. striking head 'I is swung forwardly for rocking the connecting links forwardly and downwardly, the thickest portion of the cam will be presented to the roller 4I with the result that said cam will swing the tripping lever 39 about the pivot pin 38. When this action takes place, the tripping lever will engage the rear edge of the latch member 33 and will swing said latch member about the pivot pin 34 and against the tension of the spring 3l. It will be understood that, when the striking head is swung forwardly, the inking roller will be forced downwardly for forcing the plungers and the latch rod downwardly in the sleeves 25. rIhe latch rod will thus be moved to the position shown in Figure 2 and will be engaged by the latch plate 35 of the latch member 33. It will thus be seen that, when the striking head is in forward or operative position, the roller will be maintained in inoperative position by engagement of the latch plate with the latch rod. l
As soon as the striking head is raised from the work on the surface 2, the thickest portion of the cam 42 will be shifted upwardly for releasing pressure upon the tripping lever 33. When this However, when the takes place, the spring 31 will raise the latch member to the position shown in Figure 1 and the latch rod will thus be released for permitting raising of the plungers, under the tension of the springs 26, and consequent urging of the inking roll into engagement with the plate 9 0n the striking head. As the striking head is rocked back and forth, the inking roll will effectively ink the surface of said plate 9.
Having thus described claimed as new is:
1. In combination with a stamping machine having a frame, and a striking head swingingly connected therewith and being movable to a position engaging a portion of the frame, an inking roll, plungers mounting the inking roll for engagement with stamping means on the striking head, a latch rod connecting the plungers, a latch member cooperating with the rod, and a trip member operable by movement of the striking head to move the latch member in engagement with said rod and retain the plungers and inking roll in retracted inoperative position.
2. In a stamping machine, a frame, a striking head swingingly connected therewith, an inking roll, plungers mounting the inking roll on the frame and normally engaging the inking roll with the striking head, means connecting the plungers to each other, a latch member cooperating with said plunger connecting means, and a trip member operable by movement of the striking head to move the latch member in engagement with the plunger connecting means and retain the plungers and inking roll in retracted inoperative position.
3. In a stamping machine, a frame, a striking head swingingly connected therewith, a die plate on the head, an inking roll movably mounted on the frame, an inking device, a latch rod carried by and movable with the inking roll, a latch member cooperating with said rod, and a trip member operable by movement of the striking head to move the latch member in engagement with the latch rod for locking the inking roll in inoperative retracted position in engagement with the inking device.
4. In a stamping machine, a frame, a striking head, rock shafts carried by the frame, a countershaft carried by the frame in close spaced relation to one of said rock shafts, lugs carried by said last-mentioned rock shaft, levers on the counter-shaft, means operatively connecting the levers with the lugs, a cam on the last-mentioned rock shaft, connecting links connecting the rock shafts with the striking head, plungers carried by the frame, an inking roll carried by the plungers, means urging the plungers and inking roll toward the striking head, a bracket on the frame, a latch rod extending between the plungers, a latch member movable on the bracket, and a tripping lever movable on the bracket and engageable with the cam and the latch member, said striking head moving the roller and plungers to inoperative position as it moves to operative position and said cam simultaneously engaging the trip lever for swinging the latch member to engage the latch rod for retaining the plungers and inking roll in locked retracted position.
5. In a. stamping machine, a frame, a striking head, means swingingly connecting the head with the frame, an inking roll, means mounting the inking roll for sliding movement on the frame, means urging the inking roll toward the striking head, andmeans operable by movement the invention, what is of the first-mentioned means for locking the inking roll in retracted inoperative position, said last-mentioned means including a latch member having a latch plate, a trip lever, a bracket mounting the latch member and trip lever, a latch rod carried by the second-mentioned means, and a cam on the first-mentioned means.
6. In a stamping machine, a frame, a striking head, connecting links swingingly connecting the head with the frame, rock shafts carried by the frame and mounting corresponding lower ends of the connecting links, an inking roll on the frame, means urging the inking roll toward the striking head, said inking roll being moved to inoperative position upon swinging of the striking head toward operative position, and means automatically operable by movement of the striking head for retaining the inking roll in retracted inoperative position, said means including a cam on one of the rock shafts, a latch member, a trip- RUPERT L.
