- This indexing turntable is arranged to be moved step by step between successive machine operations.
- the means for doing this may be substantially as shown in my Patent No. 1,850,671 and comprises a horizontal slide I0 to which is pivoted at II an inwardly spring pressed indexing dog 12 provided with a notched end 13 adapted' to engage successively with indexing pins I4 projecting in circular array about its axis from the lower face of the turntable 21.
- Each outward motion of the slide I0 causes the dog 12 to engage one of'these pins 14 and push it and the turntable around through an angular distance corresponding to the angular spacing of the anvils 28.
- a locking pawl I5 mounted and functioning precisely like the pawl N3 of my Patent No. 1,850,671 holds the turntable stationary between indexing motions.
- the slide I0 is reciprocated by mechanism driven by the main shaft, such mechanism comprising a bell crank lever 16 fulcrumed at 17, one arm being connected by the link I8 with the rear portion of the slide 10 and the other by a link 19 with a crank pin on a crank disk 81 on the main shaft.
- the turntable 21 carries a plurality of rivet set mechanisms 28 arranged in circular series thereon and so arranged with respect to the rivet drivers that a pair of rivets are driven simultaneously at diametrically opposite sets simultaneously, whereupon on retraction of the drivers, the turntable is indexed tobring the next adjacent anvils or sets into position. It will thus be seen that during each half revolution of the turntable all of the setting devices have been presented to the drivers to set rivets in the work (not shown) supported on the'turntabIe-ZT, so that the desired number of rivets to be driven in the piece of work supported on the'turntable is complete.
- Provisions are made in accordance with this invention, therefore, for continuing the operation of the machine, after it has once been started, through the complete cycles necessary to set allthe rivets in the work supported on the work holder. Occasionally, however, it may be desired to provide for a single actuation of the rivet settingdevices and it is also desirable that means be provided for stopping the machine at the end of any individual cycle prior to the completion of the full number required to complete the riveting of one work piece.

- the operator may swing the control lever 32 horizontally about its fulcrum'3'l to bring the pin 34 out from beneath the cam 33, whereupon the spring 56 is free to lift it into clutch open position so that the machine will stop at the end of the cycle in which it happens to-be when the control lever was so moved and without completing its full number of cycles.
- the operator may also at any time depress the lever 33 while in its position swung away from the cam 39, momentarily, to start a single cycle of the machine after which the machine will stop, provided the control lever has been allowed to rise by' the time the clutch locking member l3 has arrived in position to impinge upon the slide 11 at the completion of a machine cycle.

MACHINE AND STOP IOTION THEREFOR filed July 10, 1941 2 sheets-shut 2 Patented Dec. 7, 1943 MACHINE AND STOP MOTION THEREFOR Arthur R. Havener, Wayland, Mass., assignor to Judson L. Thomson Manufacturing Company, Waltham, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application July 10, 1941, Serial No. 401,738
7 Claims. (01. 218-) This invention relates to machines for performing repetitive cycles and to stop motions for the same, and has for an object to provide mechanism for controlling the machine mechanism by which when desired the machine may act through a predetermined number of cycles and then stop automatically, or which may be stopped at the completion of any intermediate cycle, or controlled to operate in a single cycle, at the will of the operator.
A further object is to provide a single control member by manipulation of which each of these controls may be made effective.
For a more complete understanding of this invention, reference may be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a duplex riveting machine embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a detail section of the same on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the machine.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary rear elevation of the same showing the clutch actuating mechanism.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the clutch control lever and a controlling cam therefor.
For the purpose of illustration this invention has been shown embodied in a duplex riveting machine with an indexing anvil turntable of the type shown in my Patent No. 1,850,671, granted March 22, 1932, t which patent reference may be had for detailed description of the riveting mechanism.
For understanding of the present invention it is sufficient to point out that the machine includes a frame I provided with a head 2 carrying a plurality of riveting mechanisms indicated generally at 3 and each being supplied with rivets from a feed hopper 4. Each of the riveting mechanisms is provided with a rivet driver 5 pivotally connected at 6 to the forward end of an actuating lever 1. Each lever I is fulcrumed at 8 on a link 9 pivoted at ID to the machine frame I and to the rear end of each lever I is secured the upper end of a link II. These links II are connected for up and down motion as is illustrated in my previous Patent No. 1,850,671 for actuation by the rotation of a drive shaft I2. Such connections may include eccentrics secured to the drive shaft I2 to which the links I I are connected.
This drive shaft I2 has journaled thereon a drive wheel I3 over which may be passed a driving belt I4, and the shaft I2 and drive Wheel I3 may be connected by one revolution clutch mechanism, indicated generally at I5 which may be of the type shown in my Patent No. 1,730,140, granted October 1, 1929. When a locking member I6 of the clutch is released by moving a slide I! to the right (see Figure 4), the locking memher It looks the two parts of the clutch together so that the drive shaft I2 is rotated. The slide I7 is moved toward the right by a lever I8 and pawl I9, the lever I8 being fixed to a rock shaft 20. This rock shaft 20 is connected to a controlling element as will later appear. A spring 2| moves the slide ll to the left when this is permitted by the controlling member, whereupon this slide I? will be engaged by the locking member I6 of the clutch, disengaging the clutch members from each other so that the shaft i2 comes to a stop while the belt pulley i3 continues to be driven by the belt I4. At each retraction of the slide I7 the clutch is connected for one revolution and if when the locking member I6 has completed its rotation, the slide I! is in position to engage it, the clutch is opened after a single cycle of operations of the machine. Should the slide ll be held retracted from the path of the locking element I6, the clutch will continue to be closed While the machine continues to repeat the cycle of operations.
Beneath the machine head 2 the bed of the machine is shown as provided with a bracket 25 Within which is journaled a vertical shaft 26 secured at its upper end to an indexing turntable 21. This indexing turntable is arranged to be moved step by step between successive machine operations. The means for doing this may be substantially as shown in my Patent No. Each outward motion of the slide I0 causes the dog 12 to engage one of'these pins 14 and push it and the turntable around through an angular distance corresponding to the angular spacing of the anvils 28. A locking pawl I5 mounted and functioning precisely like the pawl N3 of my Patent No. 1,850,671 holds the turntable stationary between indexing motions. The slide I0 is reciprocated by mechanism driven by the main shaft, such mechanism comprising a bell crank lever 16 fulcrumed at 17, one arm being connected by the link I8 with the rear portion of the slide 10 and the other by a link 19 with a crank pin on a crank disk 81 on the main shaft.
outwardly of the bearings 4 The turntable 21 carries a plurality of rivet set mechanisms 28 arranged in circular series thereon and so arranged with respect to the rivet drivers that a pair of rivets are driven simultaneously at diametrically opposite sets simultaneously, whereupon on retraction of the drivers, the turntable is indexed tobring the next adjacent anvils or sets into position. It will thus be seen that during each half revolution of the turntable all of the setting devices have been presented to the drivers to set rivets in the work (not shown) supported on the'turntabIe-ZT, so that the desired number of rivets to be driven in the piece of work supported on the'turntable is complete.
Provisions are made in accordance with this invention, therefore, for continuing the operation of the machine, after it has once been started, through the complete cycles necessary to set allthe rivets in the work supported on the work holder. Occasionally, however, it may be desired to provide for a single actuation of the rivet settingdevices and it is also desirable that means be provided for stopping the machine at the end of any individual cycle prior to the completion of the full number required to complete the riveting of one work piece. To this end the shaft ,26 has secured to its lower end a control cam 33 provided with a peripheral groove 3i opened out to the lower end of the cam as through a pair of diametrically opposite slots 32. Cooperating with this camis a clutch control arm 33. This control arm as shown is provided with a pin 34 which mayride in the peripheral groove 3! of the cam and may be caused to pass downwardly through either of the slots 32. This control lever 33 is fulcrumed at its rear portion on a vertical pivot 31 for limited horizontal motion in a block 38 which is fixed to a rock shaft 33 as by a pin 4fl (see Figure 2). This rock shaft 39 is journaled in spaced bearings 4i and 42 and is held against axial motion as by a pair of collars 43 and 44 pinned thereto l and Z. Adjacent to the collar 44 the rock shaft39 has secured thereto a crank arm 45 to the rear end of which is pivoted, as at 46,v the lower end of a link 41 which may be provided intermediate its ends with a turnbuckle 48 by means of which it's effective length may be adjusted. The upper end of the link 41 is pivoted between cars 53 of a crank arm fixed. to the rock shaft 20. :Thus when the outer end of the controlling lever 33 is depressed to bring the pin 34 down through one of the slots 32 to ride beneath the cam 31 as in the dotted line position of Figure 3, the arm 45 is lifted, lifting the link 41 and rocking the shaft 20 into position to retract the slide l1, thus permitting the clutch parts to engage and start the drive of the rivet actuating shaft l2. A horizontal spring 55 engaging the control lever 33 tends to hold this control lever rocked to one limit of its motion about the fulcrum 31, such as to hold the pin 34 either beneath the cam 33, or riding in the peripheral groove 3| or passing from one to the other of these two positions through either of the slots 32.
A vertically arranged spring 53 engaging the control lever 33 tends to hold the control lever elevated, rocking the rock shaft 39, and through its connections the rock shaft 20, to release the .s'lide I! so that the machine will stop at the end of the cycle in which it happens to be at any time. Thus by depressing the outer end of the control lever 33, bringing the pin 34 downward through one of the slots 32, the machine is started, and as soon as the turntable is indexed, the slot 32 is brought out of registry with the pin 34, leaving the pin held by the spring 56 pressed against the under side of the cam 30, so that the control lever 33 is held in depressed condition until the number of cycles of the machine necessaryto bring the oppositely disposed notch 32 in line with the pin 34 has been completed. As soon as this happens, the spring 56 raises the control lever 33, the pin 34 passing through one of the slots 32, causing the machine to stop at the end of that particular operative cycle. I At anytime during this normal operation of the machine with a plurality of operative cycles, the operator may swing the control lever 32 horizontally about its fulcrum'3'l to bring the pin 34 out from beneath the cam 33, whereupon the spring 56 is free to lift it into clutch open position so that the machine will stop at the end of the cycle in which it happens to-be when the control lever was so moved and without completing its full number of cycles. The operator may also at any time depress the lever 33 while in its position swung away from the cam 39, momentarily, to start a single cycle of the machine after which the machine will stop, provided the control lever has been allowed to rise by' the time the clutch locking member l3 has arrived in position to impinge upon the slide 11 at the completion of a machine cycle.
While as shown this control mechanism has been applied to a duplex riveting machine, it is of course evident that it may be applied to other similar machines where it is desired for normal operation to have a plurality of machine cycles completed before the machine stops, with the further provision for interrupting this plurality of cycles at the end of any desired intermediate cycle, or of producing a single actuating cycle, as may be desired.
From the foregoing description of an embodiment of this invention, it should be evident to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention.
