PATENT OFFICE.
MAOKINNEY, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
GEM-SETTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,158, dated October 12, 1880.
- Application filed June 5, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT G. MAGKIN- NEY, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Gem-Settin gs for Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to the manufacture of jewelry; and it consistsin a new and improved construction of those parts of studs, ear-rin gs, and other articles of jewelry in which gems, stones, and similar ornaments are set or fastened.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a view of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof in the line a: a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a detached member of the setting. Fig. 5 shows the base of the setting as first struck out, the extended wings to be afterward brought into position.
The U-shaped standards or jaws s are composed of one piece of metal,'but may be varied in form according to taste or convenience.
The base I) may be struck out from a flat piece of metal with the wings to, to be afterward, turned inward, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, in which position they serve both as ornaments and as additional supports to the U-shaped standards 8.
In forming the base from the blank in Fig. 5) by a familiar process, first brought up to a position (shown the wings are at right angles to the face of the base-piece by means of adie and plunger, and by a second operation they are carried in ward by a hollow plunger adapted for the purpose.
The U-shaped jaws are set in intervals between the wings and soldered or otherwise secured to the base I), and also to said wings, from which latter they derive additional support and strength. The setting is then complete, and may be attached to such articles of jewelry as desired by well-known means.
The wings to serve the purpose of ornamentation in a material degree, and for that purpose their form may be modified and their surfaces engraved or enameled.
A setting constructed as described is strong, cheaply made, and may be made "ery light, and is at the same time ornamental.
The wings u, if desired, may be in pieces separate from the base and soldered in similar positions; but I prefer to have them integral with the base, both for convenience in manufacture and for strength.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A gem-setting composed of the standards or jaws s, the base 11, and the rings 10, all substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
HERBERT Gr. MAOKINNEY.
