This invention .relates to separable fastener employing stringer tapes adapted to be coupled and uncoupled. More particularly, the invention relates to fasteners of this kind employing the detachable end couplings in the form of box and pin members wherein means is provided to finish andlreinfcrce boundary edges of the4 Stringer tapes, said means including a reinforcing element anchored to said box and pin members. The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the followingdescription when taken together with the accompanying drawing in which certain embodiments of the invention are dis- '.closed and in which the separate parts are designated-by suitable reference characters in each of the' views; and in which:

In separable fasteners employing stringers coupled by a slider movable along'the linksl of the stringers, and particularly fasteners of this kind of the separating type employing coupling members at one end which provide for the complete separation of the stringers, several means have been provided to finish and reinforce the tape ends adjacent the coupling members; Such means have been, for example, reinforcing plates which have been objectionable from`the standpoint of interfering with the stitching of the stringers to the garments as well as from the standpoint of the added thickness'cr bulk to the fastener. Still further, folded-over tape ends have been provided orreinforcing tapes added to the tape ends by cementing or otherwise; and these have been objectionable from the standpoint of the added thickness, asfthis added thickness or bulk interferes materially with th free and easy coupling and uncoupling of the box and pin members. y

To overcome the foregoing and other objectionable features to present tape end`constructions, I have provided a simple and practical as well as strong and durable reinforcing means and tape edge finishing means which is anchored to the coupling members in such'manner as to reinforce the tape against lateral stresses and strains to which the tapes are subjected at the coupling ends thereof. Such means are preferably in the form of a reinforcing strand or strands laid along and secured to outer edges of the Stringer tapes with stitching or other means employed to finish the tape edges and to retain the reinforcing strand or strip in position.

To illustrate one adaptation of the invention I have shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing portions of two Stringer tapes I0 and I I, to the beaded edges I2, I3, of which are attached the usual coupling links I4, I5, coupled and uncoupled bya slider. not shown, in the usual manner. Arranged adjacent end links at one end of the stringers are endstops I6 and Il which limit the closing Inovement 'of the slider, and at the other ends of the stringers are coupling members in the form of a pin part I 8 and a box part I9.

The coupling members I8, I 9, may be of any desired construction, but in the accompanying drawing the box part I9 includes a pin portion 2U extending along the beaded edge I 3, and the other side of the box part has a chamber 2l for receiving one end portion of the pin part I8. The pin part has a slightly enlarged portion 22 along the beaded edge, andthis portion has an offset rib or fin 23 at its inner surface which abuts the pin portion 20 when the parts are coupled together; and the end' of the pin part I8 adjacent the end link of the Stringer has a link portion 23a fory engaging the end link I5 of the Stringer II as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

Prior to attaching the members I8, I9, to the stringer tapes I0 and Il, the ends of these tapesare cut toa predetermined length beyond end links on the stringers. Then a reinforcing cord.

strand or'strip 26 is laid along the peripheral edge of the end of the strip and secured thereto by a stitching 25 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, in which figure one end of the tape I0 is illustrated. As all reinforcements are formed in the same manner, the brief description of one will apply to all; and like references will be used on both stringers and both ends thereof.

The securing means or stitching 25 employed to finish the cut ends of the Stringer tapes as well as adjacent side edges thereof is preferably of the feldlock type; that'is to say, the stitches are looped around the outer edges of the vtape in nishing these edges.

It will be understood. that the illustration of the stitching is diagrammatic simply to show the general arrangement employed; and these stitchings may actually be closely arranged or spaced to suit various applications, particularly with respect to the type and kind of fastener installations to be made. this time it will be understood that separable fasteners of the kind under consideration are employed on heavy garments, and other articles of manufacture as well as on thinner or lighter weight garments. Accordingly, the type, kind and arrangement of stitching will bevaried to suit the different weight of Stringer tapes employed, and also to suite the strain conditions to which the fastener may be subjected. This is also true with respect to the particular type and kind of reinforcement, strand or strip employed. In some instances, a very strong type of cord, for example a fish line type, can be used, as well as Nylon and similar strands, including various types of gut, and in other instances, wire or a combination of wire and fibrous strands can be used.

As illustrated in Figs. l and 2 of the drawing, the end 26 of the strand adjacent the bead of the tape, for examplethe bead l2 as shown, is left free and unattached to be laid along and parallel with the bead in attaching the pin and box parts thereto. In this manner, the reinforcing element becomes firmly anchored to the end stops `or coupling members, and particularly vso when these members are composed of material die' cast directly upon the Stringer tapes, where the material of the-castings extend into the interstices of the braid and other crevices that may prevail.

AIn Fig. 5 of the drawing a slight modification in the method of attaching the element 24 is illustrated. This modification consists simply in extending the stitching at around and over the beaded edge I2 of the tape as is indicated L at 21 to retain the end portion 26 -in a predetermined position. This type of construction while being advantageous with the cast-on typ@ of end stops would also be desirable where these stops are preformed from any material and in any desired manner, and then pinched, commodification wherein a supplemental reinforcing strand or element 24a is employed on the other side of the tape and retained in position by the 4same stitching. This simply means that two strands are laid in position on opposed surfaces of the tapes in the operation of applying the stitching25 thereto instead of laying the one strand as inFigs. 1 to 3 inclusive.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim asv new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. In separable fasteners employing Stringer tapes having coupling links along one edge portion thereof, an end stop adjacent end links of the tapes, means for finishing and reinforcing the edge of at least one end of each Stringer tape, said means comprising a strandlaid along said end of the tape and means retaining the strand in position on the tape end and for finishing the tape end, and one end portion of said strand being secured to the end stop secured to the tape.

2. In separable fasteners employing stringer tapes having coupling links along one edge portion thereof, an end stop adjacent end links of the Atapes, means for finishing and reinforcing the edge of at least one end of each Stringer tape, said means comprising a strand laid along said end of the tapeA and means retaining the strand in position on the tape end and for finishing the tape end, and one end portion of said strand being secured to the end stop secured to the tape and being imbedded in the material of said end stop.

3. In separable fasteners employing Stringer tapes having coupling links along one edge portion thereof, an end stop adjacent end links of A the tapes, means for finishing and reinforcing the edge of at least one end of each stringer tape, said means comprising a strand laid along said end of the tape and means retaining the strand in position on the tape endand for'finishing the tape end, one end portion of said strand being secured to the end stop secured to the tape, and the other end portion of said strand extending along the outer or free edge of the tape adjacent said end. l

4. In separable fasteners employing Stringer tapes having coupling links along one edge portion thereof, an end stop adjacent end links of the tapes, meanslfor finishing and reinforcing thel edgeof at least one end of each Stringer tape, said means comprising a strand laid along said end of the tape and means retaining the strand in position on the tape end and for finishing the tape end. one end portion of said strand being secured to the end stop secured to the tape, and said strand retaining means comprising a feldlock stitching arranged longitudinally of the edge of the tape.

5. In separable fasteners employing stringer tapes having coupling members for detachably couplingends of the tapes, means for reinforcing and finishing the end of each Stringer tape having the couplingsattached thereto, said means comprising a reinforcing element extending along the edge of said end, of each tape, one end of the element being anchored to the coupling on the tape, and means securing the element to the tape and finishing the edge of the tape.

6. In separable fasteners employing Stringer tapes having coupling members for detachably coupling ends of the tapes, means for reinforcing and finishing the end of each Stringer tape having the couplings attached thereto, said means comprising a reinforcing element extending along the edge of said end of each tape, one endy of the element being anchored to the coupling on the tape, and said reinforcing element comprising a strand of substantially non-extensible material.

In separable fasteners employing Stringer tapes having coupling members for detachably coupling ends of the tapes, means for reinforcing and finishing the end of each stringer tape having the couplings attached thereto, said means comprising a reinforcing element extending along the edge of said end of each tape, one

end of the element being anchored to the coutapesl having coupling members for detachably end-thereof, means for reinforcing the end edges coupling ends of the tapes, means for reinforcing and nishing the end of each stringer tape having the coupling attached thereto, said means comprising a reinforcing element extending 5 along the edge of said end of each tape, one end of the element being anchored to the coupling on the tape, means securing the element to the tape and finishing the edge of the tape, the coupling of the stringer tape extending along one side edge of the tape, one end portion of said. element being arranged along said side edge of the tape within boundaries of said coupling, ,and said element extending along the other side edge .of the tape adjacent said end thereof.

9. In separable fasteners employing pin 'and box couplings for detachably connecting the fastener stringers at one .end thereof, the pin part being arranged along one side edge of one stringer and the box part along the edge of the companion stringer, the tapes of the stringers terminating in alinement with the couplings at said end thereof, means for reinforcing the end edges and other side edges of the stringer tapes at said' arranged along said tape edges, a stitching at said tape edges retaining the strand in position thereon, and oneend of the strand being secured panion stringer, the tapes of the stringers termiv, nating in alinement with the couplings at said and other side edges of the stringer tapes at said coupling ends thereof, said reinforcing means of each stringer comprising a non-extensible strand arranged along said tape edges, a stitching at said tape edges retaining the strand in position thereon, one end of the strand being secured to said coupling, and 'said stitching retainv ing the last named end of the strand in position on the first named edge of the stringer tape.

12.-In stringer tapes for separable fasteners,

said tapes having die cast pin and box coupling members for detachably connecting said tapes, means for reinforcing and nishing end portions of the tapes, said means comprising a reinforcing element arranged along the edges of each tape end and a series of strands looped around the tape edges and engaging said element to retainthe same in position, and said element comprising an elongated substantially non-extensibel member extending continuously along the end of the stringer tape andalong at least one side edge thereof, one end of said element being embedded in said die cast box member.
