Description

May 4, 1943. R. KELLETT CARPENTERS TOOL Filed ,April 6, 1942 m m. w W
Patented May 4, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to a carpenters tool of the floor jack type.
One object of my invention is to provide a device which will permit a carpenter to apply pressure to flooring while laying the same.
Another object is to provide a device which will maintain a pressure on the flooring while the carpenter is nailing it down.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character which will be inexpensive to manufacture, simple to repair and easily operated.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description and with reference to the drawing, wherein:v
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a, perspective view of the link,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the foot,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the pawl bar, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified face block.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be found that A designates generally a lever having a central portion I0, one end of which carries a handle I I. The other end of the lever A carries an integral prong arranged at a substantial angle to the lever A. The lever A is provided with a series of rack teeth I3, interjacent the handle I I and the prong I2. A link B is pivotally secured at one of its ends to the lever A, adjacent the prong I2. The opposite end of the link B has pivotally secured thereto, a foot D. A floor engaging face plate E is secured to the foot D by means of a dovetail joint I4. The face plate E is interchangeable with other face plates such as the type shown at E in Fig. 5.
A pawl bar C is pivotally secured to the link B at one end thereof, adjacent the foot D. The
opposite end of the pawl bar C is bifurcated as at I5 and carries a pawl I6 between the bifurcations. The central portion I 0 of the lower A extends through the bifurcations I5 and the pawl I6 is adapted to engage the rack I3.
In the use and operation of the present invention, the prong I2 is inserted into the surface of the joist or sub-flooring and the face plate E of the foot D is brought into engagement with the flooring to be compressed. A downward pressure is then brought to bear on the handle II, increasing the distance between the prong I2 and face plate E. The pawl I6 progressively engages successive teeth in the rack I3 and locks the elements of the device in extended position, thereby enabling the operator to use both hands in nailing the flooring.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and what I claim as new, is,
1. In a device of the class described, a lever, a handle mounted on one end of said lever, an angularly disposed prong formed integrally with the opposite end of said lever, a rack arranged along one edge of said lever interjacent the handie and the prong, a link pivotally secured at one end to said lever adjacent said prong, a floor engaging foot secured to the other end of said link and a pawl bar pivotally secured to said link adjacent said foot the opposite end of said pawl for being adapted to engage said rack.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 in which the floor engaging foot is provided with an interchangeable fioor engaging face plate.
. RAYFORD KELLETT.
