March 16, 1943.
Filed Sept. 3, 1941 J. E. RING ROSE POULTRY-WING FEATHER STRIPPER 5 517797035 :NVENTOR mjfmra ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 16, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,313,770 POULTRY WING FEATHER STRIPPER Joseph E. Ringrose, Redmond, OI-eg. Application September 3, 1941, Serial No. 409,403 Claims. (Cl. 1711.1)
This invention relates to a poultry wing feather stripper and has for an object to provide a device of this character having longitudinally grooved rolls, the grooves of each roll being staggered relatively to the other roll to promote a good grip of the rolls on the wing feathers of poultry to pull off the wing feathers without cutting the wing feathers or breaking off part of the quill in the wing.
A further object is to provide a device of this character having a guard which permits entry of the wing feathers between the rolls while preventing the operators hands or the wing itself coming into contact with the rolls.
A further object is to provide a device of this character to which the wing feathers may be fed from the right or the left of the device.
A further object is to provide apparatus of this character which will be formed of a few strong, simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture, and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modiiications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a poultry wing feather stripper constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 showing the rolls having their grooves relatively staggered.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken. on the line H of Figure 2 showing the longitudinal grooves of the rolls of the gear drive of the rolls.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, the poultry wing feather stripper comprises a base plate II) which is sup ported on the upper ends of spaced frame bars the lower ends of which are secured to a platform l2 carried by sills [3 adapted to support the device upon a floor or any other suitable support.
The base plate I0 is provided with spaced vertically disposed plates I 4 having bearing openings II therein, see Figure 4, to receive the shaft It of a horizontally disposed roll II. A pair of 55 guide posts It extend vertically from each plate H, see Figure 3, and support a respective bearing block l8 which is provided with openings 20 to receive the shaft 2| of a roll 22 whichis superposed upon, and engages the roll II.
The guide posts ll of each bearing block are connected at the upper ends by a bar 23 which forms an abutment for a helical spring 24, see Figure 2. The spring bears upon the upper edge of the respective bearing block l9 which latter is provided with a guide lug 25 which enters the base end of the helical spring. Both helical springs exert pressure upon the upper roll 22 to yieldably hold it in engagement with the lower roll II.
A pair of nuts 26 are threadedly engaged on the upper ends of the guide posts II of each hearing block Is. The nuts engage the ends of the respective abutment bar 23 and may be turned upwardly or downwardly to adjust the tension of the respective helical spring 24.
The shafts l6 and 2| of the rolls are equipped .with respective meshing gears 21 and 28 see Figure 4. The gear 21 meshes with a gear 29, see Figure 2, carried by a sprocket wheel shaft 30 which is journaled in a bearing bracket 3| which is secured to the base plate Ill, see Figure 1. The shaft is equipped with a large sprocket wheel 32 which is connected by a sprocket chain 33 to a small sprocket gear 34 carried by a pulley shaft 35 which is journaled in bearing brackets 38 carried by the frame bars H, see Figure 1. A belt 36 is trained over a pulley 31 carried by the pulley shaft, and over a pulley 38 carried by the shaft 39 of an electric motor 40 which is supported on the platform l2. Through the medium of the drive means just described the rolls are rotated to feed the wing feathers of poultry, such as turkeys and other fowl between the rolls to pull out the feathers from the wings.
The rolls l1 and 22 are of special construction so as to effectively pull out the feathers without breaking the feathers or leaving part of the quill in the wings. For this purpose the rolls are provided with respective longitudinal grooves 4| and 42, see Figures 3 and 4. The grooves of the rolls are staggered relatively to each other so that the groove of one roll registers with the cylindrical surface between two grooves of the companion roll. This construction permits the rolls to effectively grip the feathers without slipping and pull the feathers from the wing during rotation of the rolls. Furthermore each groove is arcuate in cross section, the curvature being about onethird of a circumference, or degrees. This particular contour of groove has been found in practise to promote self-cleaning of the grooves. A guard 43 is disposed over the front sides of the rolls and comprises spaced rods 44 connected together at the upper ends by a bar 45 which is fixed to the front guide posts 18 of both bearin plates l9, see Figure 3. The lower ends of the rods are connected together by a bar 46 which is secured to the plates M by screw bolts 41. The bar 46 is provided with an arcuate skirt 48 which extendsforwardly over the bar and beyond. the bar. The spaces between the bars permit the wing feathers to enter between the rolls, while also the bars prevent contact of the operator's hands with the rolls.
From the above description it is thought that I the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is:
i. A poultry wing feather stripper comprising a frame, a pair of rolls on the frame, one of'the rolls being spring pressed to yieldably engage the other roll, both rolls being formed with spaced longitudinal grooves, the grooves of one roll being staggered relatively to the grooves of the other roll so that'a groove of one roll will register with the cylindrical surface between twogrooves of the'other roll during rotation of the rolls, and means for rotating the rolls.
2. A poultry wing feather stripper comprising a frame, bearing plates rising from the frames, a roll having a shaft journaled in said bearing plates, spring pressed bearing blocks supported on top of the bearing plates, 9. roll having a shaft iournaled in said bearing blocks, meshing gears on said shafts for rotating the first-mentioned roll when the second-mentioned roll is rotated, and means for rotating said second-mentioned shaft, said rolls having respective cylindrical surfaces provided with longitudinal grooves, the grooves of one roll being relatively staggered to the grooves of the other roll.
3. The structure as of claim 1 and in which said grooves are arcuate in cross section and are substantially 120 degrees of a circumference in depth so as to be self-cleaning.
4. A poultry wing feather stripper, comprising a frame, a pair of yieldingly engaged rolls on the frame, both rolls being formed with spaced long-itudinal grooves, the grooves of one roll being staggeredrelatively to the grooves of the other roll so that a groove of one roll will register with g the cylindrical surface between two grooves of the a other roll during rotation of the rolls, and means
