This invention relates to padding devices of that general class shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,763,749, issued to me on the 17th day of June, 1930, the present invention being an improvement thereon.
The object of the invention is generally to improve and simplify the construction of the device and to increase its utility and efficiency by pivotally mounting the presser feet on the adjustable standards whereby to cause said feet to exert an even downward pressure on the sheets of paper during the gluing operation, regardless of the position of said standards with respect to the table or bench.
A further object of the invention is to cheapen the construction and lighten the weight of the device by forming the component parts thereof of wood instead of metal and further to provide a novel corner anchorage for each end of the supporting frame and novel means for securing said frame in position on the bench.

The improved padding device forming the subject-matter of the present invention comprises a supporting frame consisting of a horizontal bar 5 having its lower longitudinal edge at the opposite ends of the bar cut away to form recesses 8 having relatively shallow side grooves 1 communicating therewith and adapted to receive the slotted ends 8 of vertical arms 9, the parts being secured in position by means of bolts II) extending through the slotted ends of the arms 9 and through openings Il formed in the grooved ends of the horizontal bar, as best shown in Figures 1 and 8 of the drawings. The lower ends of the vertical arms S are rabbeted at I2 and seated in the rabbeted portions I2 of the arms and ysecured thereto by screws I3 are attaching blocks I4. The blocks I4 are adapted Ito rest on the upper surface of a table, bench or other-suitable support I5, said blocks being secured thereto by means of screws It countersunk in the opposite inclined edges Il of the blocks and preferably disposed at an angle to each other, as shown.
Disposed Vbetween the vertical arms 9 are a plurality of vertically adjustable standards I8, preferably three in number, although four or five of said standards may be employed if desired. lThe supporting frame as well as the standards I8 are preferably constructed of wood so as Ato cheapen the construction and lighten jthe'weight of the device, but it is not desired to limit the invention to any particular kind of material. The standards I8 are provided with longitudinally disposed slots I9 and extending through said slots are clamping bolts 2U, the heads 2I of which bear against the horizontal bar 5 while the threaded ends thereof engage clamping nuts 22 whereby to hold the standards in different positions of vertical adjustment. The bolts 28 also act as pivots for the standards when it is desired to swing said standards laterally under certain conditions, as will be more fully explained hereinafter.
Associated with each standard I8 is a presser foot 23 consisting of an elongated block having its front side beveled at 24 to assist in preventing glue inadvertently getting thereon, said block being provided with a centrally disposed opening 25 extending entirely through the block and having its opposite end walls upwardly beveled at 26 to form stop shoulders. The lower face of each presser foot is preferably cut away at 2l to form a clearance communication with thel opening 25 and seated'in said opening is the lower end of the adjacent standard I8, the parts being pivotally connected by means of a pin 28 extending partially through the presser foot and entirely through said standard so as to permit lateral tilting movement of the presser foot to exert a uniform downward pressure on the sheets of paper, indicated at 29. The lower end of each standard I8 is inclined downwardly to form converging side edges 3U which by engagement with the stop shoulders 28, serve to limit the lateral tilting movement of the presser foot.
In using the device, the sheets of paper 29 are stacked one upon the other on the bench I5 and the standard I8 moved downwardly so as to cause the presser foot to bear against the sheets of paper and in which position it will be held by tightening the nut 22 so as to prevent accidental displacement of said sheets of paper when applying glue or other adhesive material on one or more of the edges of the strips to form a tablet or pad. Should the sheets of paper 29 be too long or too wide to t beneath one of the presser feet and not long or wide enough to iit beneath two of said presser feet when the standards are in vertical position, said sheets of paper may be rmly clamped in position on the bench during the gluing operation by loosening the clamping nuts 22 on, adjacent standards and swinging said standards laterally on the frame toward each other, with the bolts 20 as a pivot, until the lower ends of the presser feet engage said sheets of paper and then tightening said clamping nuts. Owingto. the piv-` otal connection between the presser feet and the standards, said presser feet will always remain in a horizontal position` for clamping; action on the sheets of paper regardless, of. the angle or inclination of the standards witlr re"- spect to the horizontal supporting bar. By relmoving the` several fastening bolts the:v compo,- nent parts of the device may be readlydetached and compactly foldedfor transportation or shipment.
It will, of course, be understoodthat` the, de,- vices may be made in diierent sizes and shapes and provided with any desired number. of presser feet without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what. is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the class describedcomprising a frame for attachment to asupport a longitudinally slotted standard. mounted-for vertical movement on the frame and having its lower end beveled to form downwardly converging edges, a presser foot having one side thereof provided with a downwardly beveled edge and having its central portion formed with an opening within which the beveled end of the standard is tted, and a bolt forming a pivotal connection between the presser foot and standard, the opposite end walls of the opening in the presser foot being upwardly beveled and constituting stops for engagement with the beveled edges of said standard to limit the tilting movement of the presser foot with respect thereto.
