This invention relates to holders for diamonds and other gems, particularly when the same are to be worked or polished, and has for its primary object the provision of means by which the gem may be securely held during the grinding or polishing operation, or for other purposes.
Heretofore, most of the devices employed for the purpose described, have pivoted finger for engaging the gem, and also pivoted adjusting elements for governing the separation of the fingers, springs and other members being also used and which add to the size of the device. The present invention contemplates the provision of a holder especially intended for relatively small stones, so that simplicity in structure, and an elimination of pivoted fingers, springs and similar elements is desirable and is attained.
More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a body member having a slidable seat movable through it and co-operating with fixed diamond-engaging fingers, and an adjusting member for the seat rotative in the body member to move the seat toward the fingers.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein an embodiment of the invention is disclosed, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a diamond holder constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional View of the same, the view being taken on the line 22 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device.
In the drawing, l indicates the body member of the holder, the same being provided at one end with the tapering stem 2 for reception in suitable holding means. body member I is a longitudinal passage or bore 3, opening at the end I9, as indicated at l8.
Mounted for free slidable movement within the passage 3 is a seat 4, provided at one end with a tapered or conical portion 5, terminating in the fiat face '0. The opposite end of the seat '4 is rounded as indicated at H], said rounded end [0 being operative against a conical cam surface ll provided on an adjusting member or operating key I2.
The adjusting member or operating key 12 is operative in a passage l3 extending transversely of the body member and communicating with the longitudinal passage 3, so that the rounded end I0 on the seat 4 has access to and is normally in contact with the conical cam surface ll. Extending from the end of th cam surface H is a threaded portion l4 adjustable in the threads l4 provided in the body member. The
Extending through the adjusting member or key i2 is manipulatable by means of the finger piece 10.
Rising from the end 19 of the body member I is a pair of fingers l and 8, the same having inwardly curved ends '9 extending adjacent to the end surface 6 of the seat 4 so that when the seat is elevated by manipulation of the adjusting member l2 to the required extent, a diamond I! placed upon the end face 6 of the seat 4 will be clamped between said face 6 and the extremities of the fingers l and 8. The fingers l and 8 preferably constitute rigid extensions of the body member I, said fingers possessing resiliency, such resiliency aiding in enabling the diamond ll to be securely clamped between the fingers i and 8 and the surface 6.
From the foregoing, it would be clear that by manipulation of the adjusting member or operating key [2, the cam surface I I will project seat 4 out of opening [8 to any required extent to enable the diamond H to be securely clamped between the face 6 of the seat and the extremities of the fingers l and 8, the diamond being released at any time by retractive movement of the adjusting member I2.
In the structure presented, the use of pivoted members or other elements likely to get out of order, is completely dispensed with and a structure is provided which is especially adaptable for securely holding small diamonds during the polishing operation or the performance of other work upon them.
What I claim is:
1. A diamond holder or the like having a body member, a pair of spaced fingers rigidly secured to said body member and projecting from one end of the same, the body member having a passage, a seat for a diamond slidably adjustable through said passage and movable toward or away from the fingers, a second passage through the body at an angle to the first passage, a seatadjusting member movable through the second passage, and cam means on said seat-adjusting member for moving the seat toward the fingers whereby a diamond on the seat will be clamped between the seat and the fingers.
2. In a diamond-holder, a body member having a seat adjustable through it and having an outer end projecting out of one end of the body member, said seat having its inner end located within the body member, a threaded adjusting member extending through the body member and having a cam surface operative within the body member against the inner end of the seat to adjust the seat bodily relative to the body member,
and at least two opposed fixed fingers extending toward one another over the outer end of the seat for cooperation therewith in clamping a diamond between said fingers and seat.
3. In a diamond holder, a body member provided with a transversely-extending passage, said body member having a longitudinal passage communicating with the transverse passage, a seat slidable through the longitudinal passage and having an inner end entrant into the transverse passage and an outer end emergent from the iongitudinal passage at one end of the body member, fingers at said end of the body member for co-operating with the exposed end of the seat in clamping a diamond, and an adjusting member adjustable in the transverse passage for regulating the extent of emergence of the end of the seat from the body member.
4. In a diamond holder, a body member provided with a transversely-extending passage, said bOdy member having a longitudinal passage c0mmunicating with the transverse passage, a seat .slidable through the longitudinal passage and having an inner end entrant into the transverse passage and an outer end emergent from the longitudinal passage at one end of the body member, fingers at said end of the body member for co-operating with the exposed end of the seat in clamping a diamond, and an adjusting member adjustable in the transverse passage for regulating the extent of emergence of the end of the seat from the body member, the adjusting member having a conical surface operative against the inner end of the seat, and having a threaded portion adjustable in the body member.
5. In a diamond holder, a body member having passages at right angles to one another, the first of said passages opening at one end of the body member, a pair of fixed fingers overlying said open end of the body member, a seat slidable in the first passage and projecting out of the open end of the same, a threaded adjusting screw movable in the second passage, said screw having a conical portion serving as a cam for moving the seat toward the fingers when the screw is rotated.
