UNlTED v STAT DEVICE FOR APPLYING comma BEADS Y Richard B. Anaerson,sioiig chime 7 Application March 14, 1940, SerialNo.'323 ,963 1 2 Claims.
invention relatesto a tool which will efliciently'apply'comer beads; object of my invention is to provide a device "which will apply the corner bead in a minimum of time, and which will so retain and hold the corner bead in proper leveled position so that nails or suitable attaching means can be directly applied to the bead.
A further object of my invention is to provide a structure of this type which can be adjusted to accommodate various sizes of beads and which includes a member attached thereto upon which any kind of leveling device can be placed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simplified construction of such a tool which can be manufactured at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a forward elevation of the device showing its use on a corner,
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional detail taken along the lines 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the lines 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Figure 4 is a side detail view of a portion of the arrangement.
My invention contemplates the use of a tool or suitable device which will apply a metal corner bead on inwardly projecting corners of lath or similar structure before the plaster is applied over the corner bead itself. My invention contemplates principally a device which requires as few operations as possible in applying the same and so that the bead will be in a proper level position.
I have used the character In to designate one of the portions of the device which character I represents an angle member having the two portions I I and I2 extending at right angles to each other and terminating at a point I3. Spaced at slight intervals apart through the member I0 are Snugly engaged against the flanges II and I2 are the fur her individual members I5 and I6 respectively which also include the openings H which are of the same size as the openings I4 and which in most cases will approximately coincide therewith. Suitably attached at I8 either in threaded engagement or in any other suitable manner to the members I5 and I6 are the studs I9 which studs through theilengthened slots 20' which slots are provided 'the' flanges II and I2. --;Threadably received on the studs are the wing t 'i jp Th members I5 and I6 include the bevel p rtions 22'at'the inner edges thereof and it'will 'be riotedf that-the'members I5 and IGare separate and are notattached together. Attached at 23 to the member I0 is the further member 24 which extends into the flat vertical plate portion 25. The bead member itself is made of metal and is indicated by the character 26 and includes the two extending portions 21 and 28 which merge into the round substantially arcuate bead 29.
In using the device, the bead member 26, which is of the same substantial right angle configuration as the interior of the arrangement, is placed inside of the device with the arcuate bead 29 occupying the position shown in Figures 2' and 3, and with the device resting in a suitable horizontal position. The entire arrangement is then carried upwardly into a vertical position and the bead 26 is placed on the corner with the device taking the position as shown in Figure 1 and against the lath structure as indicated by the character 30. Normally, a slight amount of the bead will project beyond the upper and lower limits of the device and the upper edges of the bead can be nailed exteriorly of the tool. Any suitable leveling device such as a carpenters level or the like is placed on the portion 25 of the arrangement which is manipulated so that an accurate vertical positioning of the bead is obtained. Nails are then driven through the openings I4 and I1 into the bead and in this way, the bead is maintained in accurate position at all times.
The openings I4 and I! are sufliciently large for this purpose and the nails can be driven all the way in or started and then finished after the tool is withdrawn. For bead members having larger arcuate bead portions 29, the wing nuts 2| can be loosened and the members I5 and [5 carried outwardly in the direction of the arrow 3| and then retightened, thereby accommodating larger sized beads. In the same manner, for smaller beads, the members I5 and I6 can be carried inwardly in the direction of the arrow 32 for a similar purpose. The bevel portions 22 at the end of the members I5 and I6 are placed with their sharper edges directly adjacent to the restricted portions of the bead 29, so that the members I5 and I6 in combination with the portions 22 will apply a firm pressure against the sides 21 and 28 of the bead member, and at all points. As a result, any desired adjustment can be made without afiecting the rigidity of the structure.
It will now be seen that I have provided a device for applying corner beads which maintains the bead in rigid position, which allows leveling of the bead without the necessity of attaching a leveling device directly thereto, which can be adjusted for varying bead sizes, which requires very few operations in using and which is of simple structure.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the real spirit and pur-' pose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within theirscope.
I claim as my invention:
l. A device for applying corner beadscomprising a member having a pair of rigid divergent flanges at right angles, said flanges having a plurality of spaced openings throughout the length thereof, a pair of adjustable flat members positioned inwardly of said-flanges and having openings coinciding with said spaced openings for permitting bead attaching nails to be driven therethrough, means for locking said adjustable members against said flanges, including studs attached to said adjustable members, said flanges having laterally elongated slots receiving said studs, wing nuts threadably received on said studs for locking the flanges against said adjustable members.
2. A device for applying corner beads comprising a member having a pair of rigid divergent flanges at right angles, said flanges having a plurality of spaced openings throughout the length thereof, a pair of adjustable flat members positioned inwardly of said flanges and having openings coinciding with said spaced openings for per- .m'itting-bead attaching nails to be driven therethrough, meansv for locking said adjustable members against said flanges, including studs attached to said adjustable members, said flanges having laterally elongated slots receiving said studs, 'w'ing nuts threadably received on said studs for-locking the flanges against said adjustable members, a leveling member attached to said right anglemember including a fiat forward face to provide a surface against which a leveling device can be applied.
