Claims.
This invention relates to domestic appliances.
and more particularly to ironing machines.
An object of this invention is to provide an ironing machine of the type having a rotatable ironing member and a relatively stationary ironing member with a unitary manipulator or pedal control which causes the rotatable ironingmember to stop with said ironing members spaced apart in the first or off position of said manipulator, causes said ironing members to -be brought together and said rotatable ironing member to be rotated at a first speed in the second position of the manipulator or foot pedal, and causes the rotatable member to be rotated at a second speed, while maintaining said ironing members together in the third position of said manipulator or foot pedal.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein a preferred form of the present invention is clearly shown.

An ironing machine embodying features of my invention may include a rotatable ironing member III, a relatively stationary ironing member II, a motor I2, and a transmission I3, all suitably mounted on a table or pedestal I4. The foregoing instrumentalities are of the usual type, in which the member I0 may be a padded roller, and the member II may be a shoe rockably mounted about the fulcrum I5. The transmission I3 is of the character which rotates the roller I0 and brings the shoe II in contact with the roller II] upon the movement of a control lever or transmission controller I6. A transmission of the character disclosed in the patent to Foley No. 1,970,511, patented August 14, 1934, may be used, such transmission being slightly modified, if necessary, and within the skill of those familiar with this art. The controller I6 corresponds to member N3 of the Foley patent. A unitary manipulator or pedal I"! is provided, and may be swingingly supported on the bar I8 with a spring or weight, not shown, normally tending to maintain the pedal I! in an upper, or off position. The pedal I1 is connected by the rod l9, lever 20 and lost motion rods M and 22 with the transmission controller I6 and with a switch 23 which controls the operation of the motor I2. The rod 2l is slidably mounted on the rod 22 with an interposed spring 24, the construction being such that upon the first movement of the rod 2I upward, the rod 22 also is moved upward to move the controller IS in its operative position. Thereafter, upon further movement upward of the rod 2I, the spring 24 allows the lost motion to become effective and thus permits upward movement of the rod 2| without a corresponding upward movement of the rod 22.
The rod 2| is connected to the lever 25 of the switch 23 in such a manner that the lever 25 moves the switch 23 to the off position, first motor speed, and second motor speed respectively when the lever I1 is in its first or off, second and third positions respectively.
The motor I2 is provided with first and second speed windings, such as to cause its drive shaft to rotate at first and second speed respectively when the corresponding windings are energized.
These windings are controlled by the switch 23 in the second and third positions of the switch. The transmission I3 may include a speed reduction train and a station clutch corresponding to members 42, 50, 54, 66 etc. of Foley.
The shoe member I I is provided with the usual heating resistance 30 under the control of a conventional "on and off hand switch 3|, see Fig. 3, to connect it to the source of power LL1. Switch 3| may be concealed within the housing which encloses the transmission I3 and it may have its operating lever or button extending outwardly of this housing at any desired location.
In the operation of the ironer, the switch 3I is first closed to heat the shoe heating element 30, and the shoe I I is allowed to be heated to proper temperature. Thereafter articles to be ironed are placed on the roller l0, and the pedal I! is depressed to the second position IIa. This causes the controller I6 to be moved to the dotted line position, and the switch 23 to be moved to po sition 23a. This energizes the first speed winding 32 of the motor I2 and causes the roller I!) to be rotated at the first speed and the shoe II to be moved against the roller III through the medium of a suitable or conventional station clutch transmission associated with the transmission I3. If the speed at which the roller I0 rotates is not the desired speed, the pedal Il may be depressed to its third position I'Ib, which moves the switch 23 to the position 23b and this energizes the second speed winding 33 of the motor I2. This causes the roller I0 to be rotated at a second speed, while the shoe II is maintained against the roller Hi. If desired, a fourth position of pedal I! may be provided below No, which moves the switch 23 to the open position 230 below 231) (in Fig. 3). In this position the shoe 30 remains in contact with roller I0; but the motor I2 and roller I0 stop rotating. This is a "press position.
I prefer to cause roller II] to rotate at relatively low speed when the pedal is on position Fla, and to rotate at a high speed when the pedal is on position llb. although this may be changed if desired to cause the roller to operate at high and low speeds when the pedal is in positions l'la and Nb respectively.
While the form of embodiment of the invention as herein disclosed, constitutes a preferred form it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
what is claimed is as follows:
1. An ironing machine comprising a rotatable ironing member, a relatively stationary ironing member, a motor, transmission mechanism between said motor and ironing members for rotating said rotatable member and for bringing said ironing members together, a pedal, said pedal controlling the said ironing members, transmission and motor to stop said rotatable member with said stationary member spaced from said rotatable member when said pedal is in an off position, to bring together said ironing members and to rotate said rotatable member at a first speed when said pedal is in a second position, and to rotate said rotatable member at a second speed, while maintaining said ironing members together when said pedal is at a third position, first and second speed windings for said motor, a switch connecting said windings selectively to a source of power, a transmission controller for causing said transmission to bring said ironing members together, said pedal having connections with said switch and transmission controller such that in the first position of said pedal, said switch is open and said ironing members are separated, in the second position of said pedal said transmission controller is actuated to bring said ironing members together and said switch connects said first speed winding to said source of power, and in the third position of said pedal said switch connects the said second speed winding to said source of power, and said pedal maintains said transmission controller to maintain said ironing members together. i

An ironing machine comprising, a rotatable ironing member, another ironing member with relative movement towards and away from said rotatable ironing member, a motor, transmission means to cause said motor torotate saidrotatable member and to bring said ironing members together, said motor having a plurality of running windings adapted to be selectively connected with a source of power, a movable manipulator having a connection with said transmission means for rendering the same eiiective to rotate said rotatable member and. to bring said ironing members together, and means operable upon initial movement of said manipulator for connecting one of said motor windings with said source of power to rotate said rotatable member at one speed and for connecting another of said motor windings with said source of power upon further movement of said manipulator to rotate said rotatable member at another speed while said connection with said transmission means causes said motor to rotate said rotatable member and to bring said ironing members together.
3. An ironing machine comprising, a rotatable ironing member, another ironing member with relative movement towards and away from said rotatable ironing member, a motor, transmission means to cause said motor to rotate said rotatable member and to bring said ironing members together, said motor having a low speed and a higher speed running windings adapted to be selectively connected with a source 01' power, a movable manipulator having a connection with said transmission means for rendering the same eflective to rotate said rotatable member and to source of power upon further movement of said manipulator to rotate said rotatable member at a faster speed while said connection with said transmission means causes said motor to rotate said rotatable member and to bring said ironing members together,
4. An ironing machine comprising, a rotatable ironing member, another ironing member with relative movement towards and away from said rotatable ironing member, a motor, transmission means to cause said motor to rotate said rotatable member and to bring said ironing members together, a pedal, said motor including first and second speed windings, a switch for connecting said windings selectively to a source 'of power, said pedal having connections with said switch and said transmission means such that in the normal position of said pedal said switch is open and said ironing members are separated, in the first position of movement of said pedal said connections are actuated so that said transmission means causes said motor to rotate said rotatable member and to bring said ironing members together and said switch is moved to connect said first speed motor winding to said source of power for rotating said motor at one speed, and in the second position of movement of said pedal said connections are actuated to move said switch to connect said second speed motor winding to said source of power for rotating said motor at another speed.
5. An ironing machine comprising, a rotatable ironing member, another ironing member with relative movement towards and away from said rotatable ironing member, a motor, transmission means to cause said motor to rotate said rotatable member and to bring said ironing members together, said motor having a plurality of running windings adapted to be selectively connected with a source of power, a movable manipulator having a connection with said transmission means for rendering the same eflective to rotate said rotatable member and to bring said ironing members together, and means operable upon initial movement of said manipulator for connecting one of said motor windings with said source of power to rotate said rotatable member at one speed and for connecting another of said motor windings with said source of power upon further movement of said manipulator to rotate said rotatable member at another speed while said connection with said transmission means causes said motor to rotate said rotatable member and to bring said ironing members together, and on further movement of said manipulator to stop rotation of said rotatable member while said connection with said transmission means maintains said ironing members together.
