R. v. N.L sNooK TROUSER HANGER Fiiedpct. 2e, 1944 F0556/ /d/i NOM/700K (Ittornegs,
Patented. F ela-'12, 1946 l; ,'riiisinyention rentes to improvements in garment hangers, and more partic'ularlytoa" device forhanging 4a plurality of trousers by the'bot tomjor cuil.r end'of the trouser legs.' l
,Y `rI'he principal objects of the presentinvention aretojprovidea simple, economicaland efficient device for hanging two pairs of trousers by `their lower `ends and suspending them with their tops down in a closet or other desirable place; to provide a hanger which willengage the trousers just above the cuff andl retainthe crease or press of the trousers while vsuspended by the hanger in a closet; and to provide ahanger for applying a pair of trousers thereto while another pair of trousers is' suspended Vby the hanger.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, as hereinafter pointed out, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of my improved hangerv showing the clamping arms in clamping position. v
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hanger showing the clamping arms in partly extended position.
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross-sectional view of one end of my hanger.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one end of the hanger showing a modified form of clamping member.
Referring more Yin detail to the drawing:
I designates a hanger embodying the features of my invention, which comprises a body member 2 preferably made of wood or other suitable material, and also preferably of rectangular shape having sides 3 and 4 and ends 5 and 6, the corners being slightly rounded as indicated at 'I for a purpose later described.
I preferably provide a pair of clamping members 8 and 9 made of spring steel or other resilient material, having their respective ends bent transversely forming ends I and II. 'I'he ends I0 of the clamping members are fastened at the respective ends of the body 2 by screws or the like I2. The screw is provided with a head I3 which extends outwardly from the end III of the clamping member and preferably having a sloping outer face I4. The respective clamps are bent as indicated at I5 so that :the sides thereof will lie flush against the sides of the body member when the clamps are in fastened position. The outer ends II of the clamps are provided with openings I6 for engaging over the head I3 of the screw holding the opposite clamp to the body 2 to lock the clamping membersto said. body tohold thetrou.- sers in said hanger. ".'Ifhelends of the. clampsV II are preferably provided Vwith knobs I'I .forrdisengaging the clamps .from the lock 1.3..,
l vIt will be notedtha-tl the screw I2 which fastens ther clampingmember Sto .the body member 2 is located near thesidet of the body, and the screw .fastening the clamp.A 9... to the .base'.f2 is located near the edge of the side3 of the body memberas best villustrated in'Figs. 2.and 3 Vto allow greater resistance in the cla'mpingcmembers when they are Vextended .outwardlyand also so that the apertures li'nvlthe `fastening.,.ends of thedevices may be extended., over theside edges of th body a sufficient distance to allow resistance of such fasteners against the end of the body member.
vWhile I have here shown the head of the screw as a lock for the respective clamp and sloping face thereon, it will be obvious that a snap fastener or other suitable means may be employed for locking the clamps to the respective ends of the device.
A hook or the like I8 is provided at substantially the center of the body member 2 for hanging the device inl a closet or other desirable place when the trousers are applied thereto.
Operation of a device constructed and assem;r bled as described is as follows:
The fastening ends I I of the hanger are disengaged from the lock I3 and the clamps extended outwardly as illustrated in Fig. 2. The legs of a pair of trousers are then inserted between the clamp and the body 2, the trouser legs being engaged just above the cuff. The clamps are then locked by pressure applied to the outer ends thereof so that the'ends II Will engage the sloping face I4 of the head I3 of the screw I2 and continued pressure on the clamp will cause the 40 -aperture I6 in the end of the clamp to engage over said head and lock the clamp to the body. The trousers may then be hung, tops downward, in a closet or the like.. The engagement of the clamps above the cuff of the trousers will prevent the weight of the trousers from pulling the trousers from the clamp, A single pair of trousers may be hung in this way or, if desired,` two pairs, one on each side of the body 2. It will :thus be seen that one pair of trousers may be hung at a time without disengagement of one pair while the other is being applied. After the trousers are applied to the hanger they may be hung in a suitable place by the hook I8.
By making the clamping members of spring steel or other resilient material, it will be obvious UNITED STATES @OFFICE that when the fasteners are loosened from the ends thereof the clamp will spring" outwardly thus having tension on the clamp until they are again applied to the locks at the ends of the body.
Fig. 4 illustrates a modified form of clamping members I9 and 20, and particularly illustrating a base 2| fastened to the respective ends of the body 2 by the screws l2 as in the preferred form of th'e invention, with one end thereof provided with ears 22 and the end 23 of the clamps being provided with ears 24 mating with the ears 22 and providing a bearing for a pin or the like 25 to provide a hinge at the corners of the clamping members so that the clamping members I9 and 20 can be swung outwardly for receiving the trouser legs and th'en inwardly for clamping the legs to the body of the hanger. Operation of the modified form of the invention is the same as with the preferred form shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a simple, economical and efficient hanger for th'e purpose set forth.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
1. A device for holding the legs of trousers comprising a body member, clamps having one end fastened to opposite ends of the body member, said clamps being bent to extend along opposite sides of said body member, the outer ends of said clamps being bent to conform to the ends of said body member, and means extending outwardly of the ends of the body member and on said outer ends of the clamps for locking said clamps to the body member.
2. A device for holding the legs of trousers comprising, a body member, clamps having one end fastened to opposite ends of the body member, said clamps being bent to extend along opposite sides of said body member, the outer ends of said clamps being bent to conform to the ends of said body member, said clamps being of sufficient resiliency to normally remain in open position for receiving the legs of the trousers, and means extending outwardly of the ends of the body member and on said outer ends of the clamps for locking said clamps to the body member.
3. A device of the character described comprising, a body, a pair of clamping members, means fastening one end of said clamping members to th'e respective ends of said body, said clamping members being bent to extend along parallel sides of said body and having their outer ends bent to extend along and embrace the op- 'posite ends of said body, and means on said outer end of said clamping members cooperating with the means fastening the clamps to said body for locking the outer ends of said clamps to said body.
4. A device for holding the legs of trousers comprising, a rectangular-shaped body member, arms secured to the respective ends of said body member, clamping members hingedly secured to said arms at diagonally opposite corners of said body member, the outer ends of said clamping members being bent inwardly to engage th'e opposite ends of said body member, and means on the inwardlybent portions of said clamps and said arms to lock said clamps to said arms.
