This invention relates to a compact for powder or other cosmetic accessories and has orits primary object the provision of such a compact arranged to accommodate a battery and bulb to illuminate the users face and so organized as to be capable of manufacture and assembly at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawing of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
In the accompanying drawing Fig.A 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of compact according to theinvention, it being shown open, Fig. 2 is a section through the compact when closed, the section being as on the line 2 2 'of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the interior elements, and Fig. 4 is a broken-out sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
The compact comprises a container or shallow box I having a hinged cover 2 in which is suitably secured a mirror 3.
The mouth of the container is substantially closed by a partition 4 having depending side and end walls 5 closely tting Within the container walls and dimensioned to space the partition from the bottom of the container, as shown.
Intermediate its ends the partition is formed with one or more wells, such as 6 and 1, to receive powder, puff or the like; and adjacent its'ends the partition is provided with raised wall portions.
Thus, at the front end, the partition is slit and bent upwardly, as at 8, to form a reflector for a bulb 9 mounted in the compartment or spacedirectly beneath the reflector. And at its other or rear end the partition is raised, as at III, to form the upper wall of a compartment, to receive one ormore'batteries II, II'. As shown, the raised portion I Ii'may be in the form of a battery compartment cover, hinged at I2, to provide ready access to the battery or batteries for replacement.
Directly beneath thel wells 6 and 1 and terminating short of the bulb and battery compartments is an insulating member I3 in the under` side of which is a. recess I4 in which is slidably mounted a switch contact member I5. 'I'he contact member is supported by a stud I6 which extends up through suitable slots in the insulating member and partition and terminates in an operating button I1 on the upper side of the partition.
secured to the underside or the insluiting member I3 -are conductor members arranged to pass from the battery compartment, tothe switch and thence to the bulb compartment. In the arseries From one side of battery II a conductor strip I9 passes directly to the bulb compartment wherein it is suitably formed to provide a socket 2 0 to receive one end of bulb 9. From the opposite side or end of battery I I a conductor strip 2l passes to the recess I4, terminating therein in a spring contact ear 22. Another conductor strip 2.3, having a companion contact ear 24 located in recess I4, is secured to the underside of insulating member I4 and extends to the bulb compartment where it terminates in a socket 25 to receive the other end of bulb 9. Thus, as will be understood, the bulb circuit is opened or closed by sliding button I1 back and forth from the illustrated, open circuit to the closed circuit position in which the contact piece I5 bridges the spring ears 22, 24. At 26 is indicated a thin sheet of insulating material laid over the entire bottom of the container I.
As will be observed, the switch member, comprising contact I5, stud I6 and button I1 serves to unite the partition and insulating member, the whole thus constituting a simple conveniently assembled unit bodily insertable into the container, being secured therein as by the snug ilt and resiliency of the depending walls 5, or soldered or otherwise secured as may be preferred. i
. the over-al1 thickness of the major part of the compact is desired to be lessfthan sufilcient to accommodate the full thickness of the batteries,
the cover is recessed, as at 2l, to accommodate the raised wall portion I0 of the partition.
In the light of the foregoing description of the preferred form of the invention. the following is claimed:
1. In a compact including-a container and a cover therefor, the combination of a partition adapted to form a closure for the mouth of the container and having e. well formed therein, an insulating member beneath the we1l,-said well and insulating member terminating short of opposite ends of the container to form at such ends, respectively, bulb and battery compartments, a recess in the underside ofthe insulating member, e, switch member slidably mounted in the recess, and conductor members secured to the from the battery compartment, tn said recess and to the bulb compartment.
2." In a compact including a container and a vcover therefor, the combination of a parution adapted to form a closure for the -mouth ko! the container and having a well formed therein, an
insulating member beneath the well, the partition having a raised wall portion adjacent one end of the container beyond the well and insulating member forming a battery compartment, and a raised wall portion adjacent the other end of the container to form a bulb compartment and reector, a recess in the underside ofthe insulating member, a switch member slidably mounted in the recess, and conductor members secured to the underside of the insulating member extending from the battery comparti 2,392,516 l underside of the insulating member extending ment, It'o\`said recess and to the ,bulb .compartment.
3. In a compact including a container and a cover therefor, a unitary insert for the lcontainer comprising a partition adapted to form a closure for the mouthof the container and having depending walls tting within the container walls.
said ,partition having raised wall portions at opposite ends thereof to form respectively, with the container, bulb and battery compartments, an insulating member beneath the partition and terminating short of said compartments, conductor members secured to the insulating mein-4 ber and extending from the battery compart ment to the bulb compartment, and switch means' extending through and securing against separation the partition and the insulating member.
