Wa zisffA/ao/zow Patented Dec. 18, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT" OFFICE EQFQQN E HQHQ Walter F; Newhouse, BentonBa -bor Mich; Anmieat-ionJmembern, lllgl h sergialqhlo fli sfi lils This' invention: relates to: a. box which is constructed with. the. several walls bound together with wires which arestapled to thewalls and serveas hinges during theassembly of the parts.
The. invention. relates inoreparticularly-to meansing position within the sidewalls ofthe box,
thus eliminating projecting clips; and other bjectionable fastening meanslheretofore employed inbox construction;
Another object of the invention; is to provide a construction wherein a -10 0p may be in the form of; a separate staple driven' into the end wall,
or a loop as a part of a binding wire, or a loop connected with another loop.
Additional objects, advantages and'capabilities inherent-in this invention will becorne readily ap parent from the description thereof which follows.
This; invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while there isshown therein preferred embodimentsof theinvention, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a selected embodiment of the invention, and the views therein are as follows:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying the invention with portions of the side walls broken away to show the fasteningmeans in place;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view along the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of one form of the invention;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a reinforcing cleat of a side wall and a portion of an end wall imposition for assemblytoforma box embodying the invention;
Fig. 6- is a perspective. viewof partsofa box embodying the invention prior to assembly;-
Figs, '7; 8 9.and 10 -show a portionof an end wall embodying different modifications of: a partof the. invention. in. perspective.
The particular. construction. herein disclosed for the. purpose of; illustrating. the invention com prises a; box made from a? box blank having.- spaced: enclosing sidewalls, the enclosing. side' walls including a bottom H, a top l2, and: side wallsl=3 which may be oi -woodveneer and arealike excptthatthy-may be ofdifierentdimensions. The-opposedwalls maybe of like dimensions but theycould; be of: other andivarious configurations. Each side wall; including the top. and the bottom; isprovided with a reinforcing cleat M: extending along itsedge at each end. These cleats-maybe suitably. secured to .the inner.- face of the wallas by staples l5, and have their. endsbevelled, correspondingly, generally to form a rectilineanfit-when assembled; as shown at IS in Figs. 1- and-5. The cleats maybetongued: and grooved, or theymay comprise any other conventional: or suitable joint construction instead of the specificbevel construction shown. The side walls; including the-top and bottom, are secured together-bymeansot spaced wires l1 which are secured to the walls by means of the. staples l5 which also serve to secure the cleats Hi to the walls; I he wires H are ofsufiicient length to permit tying o rtwistingtheir. opposed ends togetheran arranged with male and female loops [1w and li -b at the. ends of the wire, Fig. 6, to form interlocking loop fasteners so as to com-. plete the assembly of; a. box. such as shown at 2 1 in Fig; 1-.
The end walls l8, which also may be of wood veneer, may have reinforcing strips l9 along opposed edges as shown in Figs. 1 and 6. The end walls l8 are also provided with spaced fastening means adapted to be received in correspondingly spaced cutaway portions 20 provided in the face of the reinforcing members l4 adjacent the side walls which they respectively reinforce. The fastening means may be in the form of a staple 2i driven into the reverse side of the end wall and turned about the lateral edge of the end wall as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and5. They may be in the form of loops 22 made by turning opposed ends of a flexible binding material or wire upon themselves as shown in Fig. 9, or in the form of a single loop 23 as shown in Fig. 8, or in the form of separate loops 24 stapled to the end wall as shown in Fig. 7. In Figs. 7, 8 and 9 the wire is preferably stapled to the reverse side of the end wall as shown at 25, and the loop is turned about the lateral edge of the end wall. Other forms of fastening means, such as a metallic hook, a
stamping of hook or loop form, or metal strapend to be secured to the box side and thereby providing for both ends of the box to be assembled into the box blank in knock-down condition, whereby all parts (box blank and ends), are condescribed comprising side walls and end walls. cleats attached to said side walls, and means for attaching said end walls in fixed position with respect to said side walls comprising a shallow notch formed in an exterior edge of a cleat and extending outwardly from an inner side of a cleat a distance less than the thickness of a cleat to provide an opening recess interiorly of the cleat. a looped fastener secured to an inner side of a said end wall in position toextend substantially perpendicularly outward from theplaneof an end wall and to be directly received in said opening recess, and a fastening member driven through a side wall, through the looped fastener and into tained as a unit at the box factory of manufacture.
It will be readily appreciated that the means thus described provide a simple, economical, trim, and efiicient fastening which may be readily applied to boxes and crates. The employment of the loops 2! and 24 in the manner described permits a considerable saving of wire. The employment of the loops 22 and 23 permits the use of a wire of lighter gauge as it need not be driven into the end wall in staple-like manner or subjected to as many turns as in the case of the loop 2!. The arrangement in the present invention of a loop. secured in a cutaway portion of a side wall cleat by means of a nail or other metal fastener driven through the side wall and into the cleat within the loop also makes possible the elimination of projecting clips or loops which have heretofore been employed, as the cutaway portion is positioned so that the loop does not extend through the cleat but is covered by the adjacent overlying portion of the side wall. This is a distinct advantage for such fastening means which project are susceptible to disarrangement by snagging or catching adjacent objects, with consequent injury to the box and contents as well as other merchandise. The binding wire, strap or other member I 1 may be attached to the flush sides of the end walls I8 and provided with loops 28 which extend perpendicular, or substantially so, from the faces of the reinforcing strips 19, as shown in Fig. 10.
Changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, and the right is hereby reserved to make all such changes a fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. A collapsible wirebound box of the character the cleat at the said recess to secure rigidly and fixedly the end wall to the cleat and a ide wall.
2. A collapsible wirebound box of the character described comprising side walls and end walls, cleats attached to said side walls, and means for attaching said end walls in fixed position with respect to aid side walls, comprising a shallow notch formed in an exterior edge of a cleat and extending outwardly from an inner side of a cleat a distance less than the thickness of a cleat to provide an opening recess interiorly of the cleat,
a bendable tongue-like member secured to an inner side of a said end wall in position to extend substantially perpendicularly outward from the plane of the end wall and to be directly received in said recessed opening, and a fastening member driven through a side wall, the, tonguelike member and into the cleat at the recess to secure rigidly and fixedly the end Wall to the cleat and a side wall.
3. A collapsible wirebound box of the character described comprising side walls and end walls, cleats attached to said side Walls; and means in comprising shallow notches formed in exterior side edges of the cleats outwardly from the inner surfaces of said cleats a distance less than the thickness of the cleats to provide recessed openings positioned interiorly of the outer edges of the cleats and extending substantially in longitudinal planes, bendable tongue-like members secured to the inner faces of the said end walls in position to extend substantially perpendicularly outward from the plane of the end walls and to be directly received in said recessed openings, and fastening means driven through the side walls, the tongue-like members and the cleats at the recesses after insertion through said recessed openings to secure rigidly and fixedly the end walls to the cleats and side walls with all portions of the tongue-like members positioned interiorly of the ends of said box.
