e UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BRUSH! Henry D. Haase, Claremont, Calif.
Application March 6, 1944, Serial Nia-'525,189
(Cl. 30G-2.7)
` 5 Claims This invention relates to brushes and has for its object to. provide a brush head and handle which may be held very rigidly connected.
Another object of theinvention is to. provide a brush head and handle socket bolted rigidly together, but which may be quickly separated.
Another object of the invention is to provide the combination of a brush head and handle socket which may be held securely against relative lateral movement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a brush head and handle socket therefor and so formed that only like members may be used tgether.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a brush head having spaced grooves and a handle socket having flanges adapted to seat in said grooves.
Another object of the invention is to provide a socket shank for a brush handle stamped from sheet metal and provided with depending `flanges for preventing lateral movement between the parts when connected to a brush.
A further object of the invention is to provide a semi-cylindrical brush head having spaced apart annular grooves, in combination with a handle socket member having side anges adapted to seat in said grooves and means whereby said members may be held securely together and against play.
With the above and such further objects in View as may hereinafter more fully appear, I have invented the brush combination illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention,
Figure 2 is a similar View the handle shank being removed,
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Figure l,
Figure 5 is a top plan view of a socket shank,
Figure 6 is a section on 6 6 of Figure 5,
Figure 7 is a side elevational view of Figure 1 and Figure 8 is a bottom plan View of the brush head and socket member, the bristles being removed from said head.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawing, and in which I, indicated my improved brush as a Whole includes a brush with its head 2, (which in the present instance is shown to be semicylindrical, its preferred form, although it may be of different contour, for instance, flat) the bristles 3, socket shank 4 and handle 5.
The outer semi-cylindrical surface 6, of theY head block 2, is provided with apairof spaxedV apart parallel, narrow grooves or channels T and 8. Set into the under wall 9, of the block 2, is an inverted cup I0., the edges I I, of which, are flush with the outer surface 9 of the wall 9. Anopeni ing I2, is provided in. the cup and which is alignment with a bore I3, extending clean through the block 2, and through which opening .and bore a headed bolt I4, projects, the bolt headl5, hold-- ing the cup seated in itssocket I6. The outer end I'I, vof said bolt is adapted to be projected through an opening I3, inthe angularly disposed tongue I9, extending from the socket shank; into which socket 20, thereof the lowe1` end 5' of the handle 5, projects.
Extending downwardly from the tongue I9, are side walls 2| and 22, which terminate rearwardly in ears 23 and 2lI.` The edges 25 and 26, of said side walls `are formed arcuate, in the present instance, to conform 4t0 the contour of and seat in aforesaid grooves I and 8, said side walls being of a thickness to fit tightly into said grooves, whereby any lateral play between the shank and head block is prevented. A wing nut 2'I, on the bolt I 4, is screwed down firmly against the tongue I9, whereby the brush and its socket handle are held securely xed together.
Connecting and held by the ears 23 and 24 is a pin 28, upon which is crimped the lower end 29, of a brace 30, the upper end 3|, of which is screwed into the handle 5, between the edges 3l and 32, of the cylindrical socket 20, which edges are slightly spread apart by forcing the handle 5, thereinto, thus the handle is securely and frictionally gripped between the walls of the socket, and is further held againstslipping from its seat therein and secured against possible slipping by the screw 33, and whereby the socket shank is securely braced at the same time.
Having now described the preferred form of my invention to which I do not limit myself except in so far 'as I am limitedI by the following claims, I claim:
1. A brush including a semi-cylindrical head provided with spaced apart grooves, a shank, side Walls depending from the shank having arcuate edges adapted to be seated frictionally within said grooves, a bolt having its head embedded Within said head and projecting therethrough, said shank including a tongue having a hole therein through which the bolt projects, ears projecting from the rear o-f said walls, a pin connecting and secured to said ears, a brace secured a spring clamp into which a handle can be forced and a screw securing the upper end of the brace to said handle between the split edges of the socket.
2. A device as described comprising a brush head provided with spaced apart off center grooves, a stamped sheet metal socket member including a projecting tongue, side walls extending down from the tongue and seating in said grooves and a bolt extending through said head intermediate of said grooves and engaging the tongue and said side walls including enlarged rearwardly projecting ears, a pin connecting said ears, a brace member secured to the pin, a handle in said socket member and said brace fixed to said handle.
3. A device as described comprising a brush head provided with spaced apart oil center grooves, a stamped sheet metal socket member including a projectingY tongue, side Walls extending down from the tongue and seating in said grooves and a bolt extending through said head intermediate of said grooves and engaging the tongue and said side walls including enlarged rearwardly projecting ears, a pin connecting said ears,'ar brace member secured to the pin, a handle in said socket member and said brace xed to said handle and said head being arcuate, said side walls and ears having continuous arcuate edges seated in said grooves. I
4. A device as described comprising a brush head provided with spaced apart oir center ,handle socket split throughout its length to form grooves, a stamped sheet metal socket member including a projecting tongue, side walls extending down from the tongue and seating in said grooves and a bolt extending through said head intermediate of said grooves and engaging the tongue and said side walls including enlarged rearwardly projecting ears, a pin connecting said ears, a brace member secured to the pin, a handle in said socket member and said brace fixed to said handle and said head being arcuate, said side Walls and ears having continuous arcuate edges seated in said grooves and said socket being'split and normallyof lesser diameter than said handle. `5. A device as described comprising a brush head provided with spaced Iapart o center grooves, a stampedA sheet metal socket member including a projectingy tongue, side walls extending down from the tongue and seating in said grooves and a bolt extending through said head intermediate of said grooves and engaging the tongue and said side walls including enlarged rearwardly projecting ears, a pin connecting said ears, a brace member secured to the pin, a handle in said socket member and said brace fixed Yto said handle and said head being arcuate, said side walls and ears having continuous arcuate edges seated in said grooves and said socket being split and normally of lesser diameter than said handle and a screw projecting through said split and into the handle and forming said xing means.
