MARCUS D. STRAIT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
LAMP ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,816, dated March 15, 1881. Application filed January 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARCUS D. STRAIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented Lamps and Attachments for Sewing-lVIachines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, enabling any person skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference. forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to atford a safe and convenient means of giving light to sewing-machine operators by suspending the lamp from the arm of the sewing-machlne so as to throw the light directly onto the needle, thereby furnishing a much better and safer light than can be obtained from the ordinary lamp or any device heretofore used.
Figure 1 represents a full view of my in vention when applied to the arm of the sewingmachine Fig. 2, a sectional view of same, consisting of the small reservoir A, in combination with the burner 13, which are made as low as possiblein order to bring the light near to the needle. The lower part of the burner is constructed not with the thread, as on ordinary burners, but in the form of a pipe or bushing, that slides into and fits closely in reservoir A, which extends above the point at B, so as to allow the oil that may Work out of the burner to run back into reservoir A, which is i connected with the large reservoir 0 by means of pipe D. Socket E is attached to the side of reservoir 0.
Fig. 3 represents a very simple device, consisting of a metallic plate, F, having an irregular form, so as to correspond with the form of the arm of dilferent kinds of sewing-machines. The upper end is constructed in the form ot'acurve or hook, a,which rests on. thearm ofthe machine. Near the lower end an upright hook, 1), projects, which is inserted into socket E, forming the joint 0, which may be easily detached or connected by raising or lowering the reservoir 0, while the plate F remains on the arm of the sewing-machine.
I am aware that certain lamp-brackets for holding ordinary lamps for sewing-machines have been constructed by means of a clamping device; but such 1 disclaim.
From the foregoing the construction and use of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The reservoir A, burner B, tube D, and socket E, attached to reservoir 0, combined with the metallic plate F, resting on the arm of the sewing-machine, and prot'ided with book b, constructed substantially as set forth.
MARCUS I). STBAIT.
