11 Claims.
This. invention relates in particular to abrading, buiing or polishing wheels of the type which comprises an elastic or expansible rim or annulus mounted on a supporting body in which there is means for expanding and contracting the rim to secure upon and release from the periphery of said rim, respectively, an endless treating band for abrading or other purposes.
One form of wheel of this type is shown and described in my copending application Serial No. 541,486, and includes two relatively rotatable coaxial body sections, an expansible rim coaxial with said body sections, an endless treating band encircling said rim, a plurality of thrust members radially slidable on one of saidbody sections and each connected to said rim and to the other body section so that said thrust members will be moved outwardly and inwardly to expand and contract said rim and grip and release the endless treating band upon relative rotation of said body sections in opposite directions, respectively, and an operating element for causing relative rotation of said body sections.
With wheels of this character the endless treating band stretches during operation so that it may become loose o-n the expansible vrim and require frequent adjustment of said operating member to prevent slipping of the band on the rim.
One object of my present inventionis to provide in an abrading wheel of this character a novel and improved simple' and easily and quickly aotuatable operating element for relatively rotating said body sections to expand said expansible rim.
Another object is to provide in such an abrading Wheel novel and improved means whereby the rim initially can be expanded by said operating element into tight engagement with the treating band and thereafter the rim shall be expanded gradually and automatically to compensate -for stretching of the treating band and to maintain a tight, non-slipping contact between said treating bandand said rim.
Other objects, advantages and results of the invention will be brought out by the following deya sciiption in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of an abrading wheel embodying my invention, with portions broken away and shownin section for clearness in illustration.

Specifically describing the invention, the wheel includes a body I which comprises a tubular hub I to be applied to the shaft of a motor or other suitable driving mechanism, The periphery of the hub has a circumferential seat 2 coaxial with the hub, at the inner end of which is a shoulder 3 in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the hub and against which abuts a ring 4 which may be secured in position on the hub in any suitable manner. Also upon the seat 2 is mounted the main section. 5 of the body I including a flat disc ofl metal having a central opening EiV of substantially the same diameter as the seat 2 and through which the hub extends. This disc 5 is clamped on the hub tightly against one side of the ring 4 by a nut I which isscrew-threaded on the hub. Desirably the seat 2 has a, flat portion 8 and the wall of the opening 6 has a similar flat portion to engage the portion 8 for preventing relative rotation of the disc 5 and hub I. The disc 5 has a plurality of equidistantly circumferentially spaced slots 9 which open through its periphery and ineach of which is mounted a thrust member I 0 to move radially of the disc. As shown each thrust member is in the form of a die casting and includes a shank I I which has a longitudinal groove I2 in each of opposite sides thereof to receive and embrace the disc 5 at opposite edges of one of the slots 9. At one end of the shank II is a head I3 which is embedded in a segment I4 of an eX- pansible rim which is coaxial with the disc 5 and is disposed outwardly of the periphery of said disc. The segments I4 complement each other to form an annular rim when the segments are in sidewise abutting relation to each other as shown in Figure l, and preferably said segments are formed of some yielding and friction producing material such as rubber.
The other end of the shank of each thrust member is pivotally connected tothe' means for moving the thrust members inwardly and outwardiy of the wheel body. As shown, each thrust member is pivotally connected at l5` to one end 0f a link I6 the other end of which is pivotally connected at I'I to-a second body section or actuator f8 which also comprises a circular disc of metal but is of a diameter less than that of the' disc' 5. This second disc I8 is rotatably mounted on a second annular seat i9 on the hub 2 at the side of the ring 4 opposite the disc 5 and in abutting relation to a shoulder 20 whose plane is parallel to the plane of the shoulder 3, whereby the disc I8 is held against longitudinal movement on the hub. The disc I8 is of a thickness somewhat less than the distance between the ring 4 and the shoulder 20 so that there will be no binding action on the disc'which would interfere with free rotation thereof on the hub.
With this construction it will be observed that normally the expansible ring is contracted, that is the adjacent segments I4 are in abutting contact with each other as shown in Figure 1 and the links I5 are inclined to radial lines of the.
body, but upon rotation of the disc I8 in the direction of the arrow in Figure 1, the links will be actuated so as to move them longitudinally outwardly of the body into approximately radial planes of the body and rim and thereby exert outward pressure on the thrust members Ill and the rim. This in turn will expand the rim, that is move the segments I4 simultaneously, equidistantly andradially'outwardly. For rotating the disc I8 I have shown an operating -mechanism which includes a link 2I pivotally connected to theactuator disc I8 by a pivot bolt 22 and having a circular opening 23 in which is fitted a cam 24 which is eccentrically rotatably mounted on the main disc 5 by a pivot bolt 251. As shown, the main body section or disc 5 has a transverse opening 26 while the actuator section or disc I8 has an opening 2'I to provide clearance for the link 2l and operating cam 24. The cam is so mounted on the disc 5 and is so related to the link 2I that whenthe cam is in one position the actuator disc I8 is so located relatively to the main disc 5 thatthe links I6 permit the rim to contract as shown in Figure 1, while when the cam is moved about 180 into another position the actuator disc is rotated to push the links outwardly and expand the rim. From the foregoing it will be understood that the rim can be easily and quickly contracted and expanded to permit application and removal of an endless treating band 28, such as'bands having emery powder or sand on their outer surface. As is known in the art, such` bands generally have an internal diameter slightly greater` than the external diameter of the expansible rim when the latter is contracted, so that when the rim is expanded it will tightly grip the band and hold it firmly against movement on the rim.
In accordance with the invention, the axes of the pivot bolts 22 and 25 are so related to each other and to the link 2I that prior tothe time thatthe links reach their radial positions, the cam 24 will pass the dead center position and the end of the link connected to the cam will be snapped against the wall of the opening 21 by the tension exerted on the link as the result of the' resistance of the band 28 to expansion of the rim, itbeing understood that the rim segments I4 are resilient or yieldable. Thus the rim may be locked in expanded position, and to contract the rim it is merely necessary to rotate the cam in a direction opposite to that in which it was rotated for expanding the rim. Preferably the cam has a polygonal head 29 -for application oa wrench to facilitate rotation of the cam.
Another feature of the invention is means for gradually and automatically expanding the rim to compensate for stretching of the treating band 28 during use thereof so as to maintain a tight non-slipping contact between the treating band and the rim. As shown, the link 2I has a lostassises motion connection with the actuator disc I8 which is effected by arranging the pivot bolt 22 in a slot 30 in the actuator disc. With this construction, the actuator disc may move in a direction to expand the rim independently of the link 2I and cam 24 after the rim has been initially expanded. To continuously influence the actuator disc in that direction, one or more tension springs 3l may be connected between the two discs 5 and I8. As shown', there are three springs and eachY has one end connected at 32 to the main disc 5 andA its other end connected at 33 to the actuator disc I8, clearance for the springs between the discs being provided by transverse openings 34 and-35 in the respective discs which partially overlap each other.
It will be understood that the force required to expand the rim a given distance decreases as the Alinks I8 approach their respective positions radially of the wheel, so that after theinitial large force required to expand the rim into tight contact with the treating band 28 has been applied through the cam 24, expansion of the rim will be continued by the springs 3I so as to maintain the rim in tight contact with the treating band.
While I have shown and described the invention as embodied in certain details of construction it will be understood that this is primarily for illustrating the principles of the invention and that many modications and changes may be made in the construction of the wheel within the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is: y Y

A wheel of the character described comprising a body including a main section, an expansible rim, va plurality of radially movable thrust members mounted on said main section and connected to said rim, and means for simultaneously actuating'all of said thrust members radially to expand ,and to contract said expansible rim including an actuator section rotatably mounted on said main section coaxially with said rim, an element connecting each of said thrust members to said actuator section and movable relatively to both thereof so that said thrust members will be moved longitudinally inwardly and outwardly upon relative rotation of said actuator and said operating member for rotating said actuator section including a link pivotally connected at one end to one of said body sections, and a cam rotatably mounted on the other body section and operatively connected to said link so that rotationof said cam will cause relative rotation 0 said body sections.
2. The wheel set Aforth in claim l wherein said pivotal connection of said link to said bodysection permits limited relative rotative movement of said body sections inthe direction to cause expansion of said rim and with the addition of means normally and continually'influencing said zody sections to relatively rotate in said vdirecion.` f
3. The wheel set forth in claim 1 wherein said pivotal connection of said link to said body section permits limited relativerotative movement ofV said body sections in the directiontocause expansion of said rim and with the addition of a spring connected at each of its opposite ends'tcr one of said body sections to normally influence said body sections to relatively rotate in said direction.
4. The wheel set forth-in claim 1 wherein said pivotal connection of said link to said body section is a pin and slot connection to permit limited relative rotation of said body sections in the direction to cause expansion of said rim and with the addition of means normally and continually influencing said body sections to relatively rotate in said direction.
5. An abrading wheel of the character described, comprising two coaxially relatively rotatable body sections, an expansible rim coaxial with said body sections, a plurality of thrust members radially slidably mounted on one of said body sections and each connected at its outer end to said rim, and a link pivotally connected to each thrust member and to the other of said body sections so that upon relative rotation of said body sections in opposite directions said links will be actuated longitudinally outwardly and inwardly respectively to expand and contract said rim, and an operating element for causing relative rotation of said body sections, including a link pivotally connected at one end to one of said body sections, and a cam rotatably mounted4 on the other body section and operatively connected to said link so that rotation of said cam will cause relative rotation of said body sections.
6. The wheel set forth in claim 5 wherein said pivotal connection of said link to said body section permits limited relative rotative movement of said body sections in the direction to cause expansion of said rim and with the addition of means normally and continually influencing said body sections to relatively rotate in said direction.
7. The wheel set forth in claim 5 wherein said pivotal connection of said link to said body section permits limited relative rotative movement of said body sections in the direction to cause expansion of said rim and with the addition of a spring connected at each of its opposite ends to one of said body sections to normally inuence said body sections to relatively rotate in said direction.
8. A wheel of the character described comprising a body including a main section, an expansible rim including a plurality of segments, a plurality of radially movable thrust members mounted on said main section and each connected to one of said segments of said rim, and means for simultaneously actuating all of said thrust members radially to expand and to contract said expansible rim including an actuator section rotatably mounted on said body coaxially with said rim, and a link for each thrust member pivotally connected at its opposite ends to said thrust member and to said actuator section respectively, said links being normally inclined to radii of said rim with the latter contracted and being actuated into approximately radial planes of said rim to expand said rim upon relative rotation of said actuator and said body, and an operating member for rotating said actuator section including a link pivotally connected at one end to one of said body sections, and a cam rotatably mounted on the other body section and operatively connected to said link so that rotation of said cam will cause relative rotation of said body sections.
9. The wheel set forth in claim 8 wherein said pivotal connection of said link to said body section permits limited relative rotative movement of said body sections in the direction to cause expansion of said rim, and with the addition of means normally and continually influencing said body sections to relatively rotate in said direction.

An abrading wheel of the character described, comprising two coaxially relatively rotatable body sections, an expansible rim coaxial with said body sections, a plurality of thrust members radially slidably mounted on one of said body sections and each connected at its outer end to said rim, and a link pivotally connected to each thrust member and to the other of said body sections so that upon relative rotation of said body sections in opposite directions said links will be actuated longitudinally outwardly and inwardly respectively to expand and contract said rim, and an operating element for causing relative rotation of said body sections, and means for normally and continually iniuencing said body sections to relatively rotate in the direction to expand said rim.

A wheel of the character described comprising a body including a main section, an expansible rim, a plurality of radially movable thrust members mounted on said main section and. connected to said rim, means for simultaneously actuating all of said thrust members radially to expand and to contract said expansible rim including an actuator section rotatably mounted on said main section coaxially with said rim, an element connecting each of said thrust members to said actuator section and movable,
relatively to both thereof so that said thrust members will be moved longitudinally inwardly and outwardly upon relative rotation of said acl said actuator section in the direction to expand said rim.
