Description

parting from the spirit of the invention.
Patented Aug. 21 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 BENCH BACK Robert Arthur Campbell, Ann Arbor, Mich. Application February 17, 1942, Serial No. 431,303
I 2 Claims. (01. 155-133) Generally considered, this invention aims to provide a back, capable of being assembled readily with the seat portion of a backless bench. The invention aims, further, to provide novel means for causing the device to have a secure hold on the edge portion of a bench. Another object of allel relation. The upper'arms 24 of the brackets 23 are disposed on the outer surfaces of the rails the invention is to supply a device of the class described capable-of being disposed in small compass, to be carried about readily.
It is within the province of thedisclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the .in-
vention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without de- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an elevational ,view wherein the structure is viewed edgewise.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Figure 4 is an elevational view wherein thedevice is viewed edgewise,
Strips l8 are disposed on the outer surfaces of the rails Id, at the forward edges of the rails, and
are held in place by securing elements IS. The strips I8 are supplied with rearwardly extended arms 20 disposed approximately parallel to the lower edges of the rails Id, and have enlargements 2|, into which binding screws 22 are threaded. At its forward edge, the seat 1d preferably abuts against the strips l8, and is bound between the lower edges of the rails Id and the end of the screw 22.
As shown in Figs. Sand 4 of the drawing U shaped brackets 23 are provided and include upper arms 24 and lower arms 25, disposed in par- Ie and are connected thereto by securing elements 2B. The lower arms 25 terminate in enlargements 26, into which binding screws 21 are threaded. The lower edges of the upper arms 24 are flush with the lower edgesof the rails le.
Therefore, when the screws 21 are advanced, the
edge portion of the bench 1e is bound, against the lower edges of the upper arms 24 and there is no likelihood that the hold of the securing elements 28 on the rails le will be loosened.
From the foregoing it will beseen that the device constituting'the subject matter of this application is simple in construction, easily removable, capable of acquiring alfirm hold on a bench, and so constructed as to afford comfort for the user. l
Any desired materials of construction may be employed, for example, plywood metal, laminated plastics, or a combination of the materials specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:.
1. In a portable back for backless benches, a
replacement part comprising a rail, a strip secured to one side of the rail, at the forward edge thereof, and including an arm extended backwardly beneath the lower edg of the rail, and a binding screw threaded into the arm and operating toward the lower edge of the rail.
2. A portable back for backless benches, comprising a pair of side rails, a flexible member constituting the sole connection between the rails, and means carried by the side rails for holding them detachably engaged with a bench, said means comprising strips secured to the rails adjacent to the forward edges thereof, the'strips having arms extended backwardly under the lower edges of the rails, and binding screws threaded into the arms and operating toward the lower edges of the rails.
