4 Claims.
as are employed in so called out off machines:
another object of the invention is to insure the application of a cooling fluid to and the wetting of the portions of the work faces which lie adjacent to the cutter; other objects of the invention will appear from the following description at the end of which the invention will be claimed.
In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof and in which,
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of such portions of a cut-off machine as are necessary for the illustration of features of the invention: and
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating a modiflcation.
Referring to the drawing, a is the rapidly rotating driving shaft or spindle and 1) indicates its bearing housing. There is a two part head mounted and secured to the shaft or spindle a and between the parts I and 2 of which the cutting disk 3 of abrasive material is mounted. l and I indicate a pair of interfitting spaced caps or elements providing between their central portions an annular receptacle l2. One of these caps or elements 4 is secured to the bearing housing 1) and the other 5 is secured to the adJacerit portion of the head. Packing l is arranged between the shaft or spindle a and the fixed cap part or element 4. There is a chamber 9 between the parts of the head. III are ports arranged'between the respective faces of the cutter and the adjacent parts of the head. There are means for introducing cooling fluid under pressure to the chamber. It may be remarked that the housing b and the element 4 may be made in one piece and also that the cap 5 and the part 2 may also be made in one piece.
II is a pipe communicating with the annular receptacle i 2 and it serves to supply a stream of cooling fluid under pressure. Referring more particularly to Figure 1. there is provided a row of ports or openings l3, through the cap part or element 5, and the adjacent part of the head and discharging into the chamber 9. The cutting disk 3 near the center thereof is provided with ports or openings It so that the fluid is delivered to both faces of the cutter disk as indicated by the arrows and thence to the surface of the work upon which the cutter is operating, keeping the work cool. Referring to Figure 2 the construction and arrangement are as above described in connection with Figure 1 except that the ports Ila are located through the hub portion of the cap or element 5 and they discharge into the chamber 9 at opposite faces of the cutter near a central opening therein.
It is an advantage of the described construction that the cooling fluid is delivered to the respective faces of the cutter in a region adjoining the cutting edge so that the cooling fluid reaches both faces of the cutter in the region where the latter is subjected to the highest heat due to friction and cutting action.
Furthermore the cooling fluid traverses botn faces of the cutter to the periphery thereof and so cools the work and keeps it cool. Furthermore, an important feature is that the cooling fluid is delivered at the periphery of the cutting disk onto the work; thus the temperature of the work is not permitted to rise to a point where the character or properties of the work might be undesirably effected.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and in matters of mere form without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited in respect to such matters or otherwise than the appended claims may require.
I claim:
1. In cooling means for abrasive cutters including an annular cutting disk of abrasive material, an endwise immovable solid rotating driving shaft or spindle and its bearing, and a two part head mounted on the shaft and between the parts of which the cutting disk is mounted, the improvement which comprises a pair of interfltting spaced elements providing at their central portions an annular receptacle and of which one appertains to the bearing and is flxed, and the other appertains to the adjacent part of the head and is rotatable, packing arranged between the endwise immovable solid shaft and the fixed elements, packing arranged between the rotating and flxed elements, a chamber between the parts of the head, spaced radial ports between each face of the cutter and the adjacent part of the head, and means for introducing fluid under pressure to the chamber.
2. In cooling means for abrasive cutters including an annular cutting disk of abrasive material, an endwise immovable solid rotating driving shaft or spindle and its bearing, a two part head mounted on the shaft and between the parts of which the cutting disk is mounted, the improvement which comprises a pair of interfitting spaced elements providing between their central portions an annular receptacle and of which one is secured to the bearing and the other is secured to the adjacent part of the head, packing arranged between the endwise immovable solid shaft or spindle and the fixed elementapacking arranged between the rotating and fixed elements, a chamber between the parts or the head, ducts from the receptacle to the chamber, spaced radial Portsbetween each face of the cutter and the adiacent part of the head and means for introducing fluid under pressure to the chamber.
3. In cooling means for abrasive cutters including an. annular cutting disk of abrasive material, an endwise immovable solid rotating driving shaft or spindle and its bearing, a two part head mounted on the shaft or spindle and between the parts of which the cutting disk is mounted, the improvement which comprises a pair of interfitting spaced elements providing between their central portions an annular receptacle and of which one is secured to the bearing and the other is secured to the adjacent part of the head, packing arranged between the endwise immovable solid shaft and the fixed element, packing arranged between the rotating and fixed elements. a chamber between the parts of the head, spaced radial ports between each face of the cutter and the adjacent part of the head, ports between the chamber and receptacle and through the cutter and an intake connection to the receptacle.
4. In cooling means for abrasive cutters including an annular cutting disk oi abrasive material. an endwise immovable solid rotating driving shaft or spindle and its bearing, a two part head mounted on the shaft or spindle and between the parts or which the cutting disk is mounted. the improvement which comprises a pair of interfitting spaced elements providing between their central portions an annular receptacle and oi which one is secured to the bearing and the other is secured to the adjacent part of the head, packing arranged between the rotating and fixed elements, a chamber between the parts of the head, spaced radial ports between each face of the cutter and the adjacent part of the head, and means comprising ports from the receptacle to the chamber and provided through one part of the head and discharging at the inner rim of the cutter.
