Metallic Pist pn Packing.- .No. 237,477. Patented Feb.- 8 1831'. 7
WITNESSES:
INVENTO IATTORNBYI N, PE'ERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ JOSEPH H. BROWN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO EDUARD HENN, OF SAME PLACE.
METALL-IC PISTON-PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,477, dated February S, 1881.
Application filed August 16,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HENRY BROWN, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Piston-Packin gs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in metallic pistonpackings for steam engines;
and the invention consists of a piston-packing made of a series of interior wedges with exterior guide-tongues and central arcshaped faces, and of a series of exterior segments which are guided on the tongues of the wedges,
the segments overlapping the joint of the wedges.
In the accompanying drawin gs, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved metallic piston-packing Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same partly in section and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views, respectively, of the outer segments and inner wedges of the pack- 1ng.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- =2 5 sponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the interior wedges of my improved piston-packing, which are made of triangular shape, the outer inclined sides of the same being provided with 0 central guide ribs or tongues, act. The tongues a a. are flattened or rounded off at theiriutersection in line with the apex of the wedges, so as to form faces I), which are arcs of the outer circumference of the packing.
On the tongues a a of the wedges A are guided the centrally-grooved segmental sections B, which form the exterior portion of the packing, and which extend across the joints of the wedges A.
The wedges A are provided with projecting 4o ribs or abutments (1 at theirinner sides, against which the adjusting springs or screws press, by which the sections of the packing are forced in outward direction against the inner surface of the steam-cylinder.
The packing always retains its circular shape, notwithstan ding its gradual wearing off by use, and secures thereby intimate contact with the surface of the cylinder by means of the wedges and the interior adjusting mech- 5o anism. By the interlocking and overlapping of the wedges and segments a reliable and efl'ective packing-surface for the pistons of steam-engines, pumps, 800., is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent V The combination, in a piston-packing, of a series of triangular interior wedges, A, provided with outwardly-projecting tongues 11, the ends of which are rounded off in line with the apex of the wedges, and a series of plano-convex segments, B, outwardly adapted to fit the cylinder, and inwardly provided with longitudinal grooves adapted to fit the tongues of the wedges, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claimthe foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of August, 1880.
JOSEPH HENRY BROWN. Witnesses:
