I 'MEANS FOR IMPREGNATING FABRICS WITH LIQUID Filed June 18, 1343 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 1n UGILZOZ? liH. czeczowbizls'w Patented Feb. 27, 1945 MEANS FOR IMPREGNATING FABRICS WITH LIQUIDS Rudolph Herbert Ozeczowitzka, Pendleton, Salford, England, assignor to Texproof Limited, Pendleton, England, a British company Application June 18, 1943, Serial No. 491,369
' In Great Britain June 19, 1942 This-invention has for its object to provide an improved machine for effecting the impregnation of fabrics with volatile liquidsor solutions containing volatile liquids with minimum loss of solvent and with a minimum of skin formation on the machine due to deposit of the liquid and evaporation of, solvent therefrom,
A machine in accordance with this invention comprises a tank or vessel of a length to suitthe width of the fabric being impregnated, with a roller or rollers beneath the surface of the impregnating liquid in the tank or vessel, and with squeezing rollers to remove excess of liquid from the fabric as it leaves the tank or vessel, and a lid which makes a joint with the vessel except at the parts'where the fabric passes into and out of the vessel, the lid at such parts coming adjacent to surfaces of the vessel, so that the thickness of the fabric serves to seal the gap between the said parts and to prevent or minimize escape of solvent I b at its opposite ends on to which the lid 0 is clamped by the wing nuts d. There is an mtemal flange e along the opposite sides of the top of the tank and the lid 0 when clamped in place extends into and below the space between such flanges, being approximately a fit between? the flanges. By reason of the lid coming below the flanges, a narrow gap is left between the lower edge of the flange and the upper edge of the lid at its opposite sides, and the fabric 1 enters and leaves the tank through such gaps; it is deflected by the walls of the gaps as shown in Figure 2 and thus serves to seal the gaps against the escape of solventfrom the tank.
A roller 0 at the bottom of the tank around which the fabric passes guides the latter through 1 Claim. (Cl. 68-19) V 1 the correct level by an inlet valve h controlled by Adjacent to the outlet gap is a pair of rods 1', is, between which the fabric passes just prior to leaving the machine. Such rods which do not revolve, but deflect the tensioned fabric as shown in Figure 2 and serve to remove excess liquid from the fabric. The rod It is adjustable relatively to the rods from outside the machine bythe screw m to alter the extent to which the fabric is deflected and so the extent of the scraping action of the rods upon the fabric.
All the rods are located at their ends in slots in the tank walls and can be readily removed when the lid is out of position. The adjacent edges of the lid and tank flanges are rounded to prevent damage to the fabric passing between them. I provide a drain connection 11. for emptying the tank and I may provide a screw or jack 0 for tilting the tank to facilitate drainage. A gauge p can be used for showing the liquid level in the tank.
What I claim is: v
A machine for use in impregnating fabrics with a volatile liquid or with a solution containing a volatile liquid comprising a tank or vessel of a length to suit the width of the fabric being impregnated, with at least one roller around which the fabric travels beneath the surfaceof the impregnating liquid in the tank or vessel, spaced rods adjacent to the fabric exit from the tank and above the level of the liquid therein, each rod deflecting the path of the cloth as it passes between and over the rods so that the latter remove excess of liquid from the fabric, just prior to its leaving the tank or vessel, and a lid which makes a joint with the vesselexcept at the parts where the fabric passes into and out of the vessel, the lid at such parts coming adjacent to surfaces of the vessel, the adjacent surfaces of lid and vesseleach deflecting the path of the fabric passing into "'and out ofthe vessel so that the fabric serves to sides of the fabric which is under tension and I thus insure a smooth even surface spreading.
the impregnating liquid which is maintained at RUDOLPH HERBERT CZEXJZOWITZKA.
