M. B. SORIBNER. Stove Pipe- Thimble and Cover.
No.23 6,912. Patentedlan.25, l88l.
N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITIIOGRAFHER, WASHlNGTOiL ilk:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES B. SORIBNER, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN G. STEWART, JR, AND ISAIAH BAKER, OF SOMERVILLE, MASS.
STOVE-PIPE THIMBLE AND COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,912, dated January 25, 1881.
Application filed May 12, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MosEs B. ScRrBNER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Stove Pipe Thimble and Automatic Cover, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cover for a stove-pipe thimble which will antomatically close the opening of the thimble when the stove-pipe is withdrawn, and which will be so attached to the thimble as to be ready for use when required.
My improvement relates to a plate or flap hinged or pivoted to the rear of the upper part of the face-plate of the thimble, and provided with a central circular projecting piece adapted to fit into and close the opening in the face-plate of the thimble when the stovepipe is removed, and also to be readily pushed open to a horizontal position when the stovepipe is inserted.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a vertical section of my invention with the stove-pipe inserted. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the thimble, showing the cover in aclosed position. Fig. 3 is a front view of the faceplate. Fig. 4represents the connection of the face-plate with the frame.
A represents the frame of the thimble, and B the front piece or face-plate of the same. To the upper part of the rear or inner side of the face-plate B is hinged or pivoted the cover 0, constructed as shown in Fig. 1-that is, hax in g a central circular projecting piece which is designed to fit in the stove-pipe opening in the face-plate B when allowed to fall, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The central projecting piece of cover 0 has a corresponding cavity or recess in the rear, and the rear line or plane of the cover is at an angle with the front surface, so as to weight the lower end of the cover, to insure the proper fitting of the same in the opening of the faceplate B. The cover 0 may be additionally weighted, if found necessary, or a spring, H, may be employed to keep the cover 0 in a closed position.
The projecting portion C of the cover 0- bears against a projection, G, at the rear of the face-plate when the face of the cover 0 is flush with the surface of the face-plate B, as shown by the dotted lines.
When the stove-pipe is to be used it is only necessary to insert the same into the thimble, which causes the cover to open and be held in the position shown in Fig. 1, and when the stove-pipe is removed the cover falls and closes the opening in the face-plate.
The cover 0 is hung in brackets d, attached to the frame A, at its upper inner part, so that it can be readily attached to or detached from the frame and removed at the front of frame A.
The frameA is designed to be set permanently in the front wall of the chimney-place, and is provided with lugs b b on each side.
The face-plate B is made entirely separate from the frame A, and is provided with lugs a a at each side, which are made to fit in lugs 11 b, so as to admit of the face-plate being readily attached to or detached from frame A at pleasure.
By means of my invention I avoidthe trouble incident upon the use of a separate cap for closing the hole of the thimble, which isliable to become lost or mislaid.
The device may be used as a ventilator by partially opening the cover 0, in which position it may be held by any convenient means.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a stove-pipe thim ble and cover, the cover 0, having a projecting face-piece, and provided with a projection, O, in combination with the projection G on the rear of the faceplate B, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The separate and detachable faceplate B, provided with the lugs 00 a, in combination with the set frame A, provided with the lugs b b and the detachably-hung cover 0, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
M. B. SORIBNER.
