APPARATUS FOR JOINING THE WEBS OF PAPER ROLLS Filed May 24, 1940 Patented Dec. 19, 1944 2,365,529 APPARATUS FOR JOINING THE wEBs OF PAPER ROLLS Paul Dietrich, Augsburg, Germany; vested in the Alien Property Custodian Application May 24, 1940, Serial No. 337,038
In Germany June 24, 1939 4 Claims.
This .invention relates to a device for joining paper rolls by sticking a new roll to a runningdown web, the new roll, disposed in a rotary frame, being brought up to the speed of the runhing-down web and, by turning the frame, into a position ot which the stickin operation is performed. This is done by means of a pressure applying brush at the end of a lever actuated by a piston or pistons which are moved by pneumatic or hydraulic pressure controlled by an electromagnetically operated piston slide-valve or a valve system.
The present invention constitutes an improvement of a device of the type outlined above and takes into consideration that when the runningdown roll is swung out of operating and into sticking position for the new roll the brush must be moved out of the range of the running-down sticking. Such an arrangement is suitable also because it reduces fluttering of the running web and thereby insures sticking.
In a known construction of this class the cylinder for actuating th lever for the brush is fixed to the machine frame. To bring about the to and fro motion of the brush preceding the sticking operation the shaft for the lever is moved separately with the result that the piston, particularly during application of the brush to the running-clownwemis displaced to such an extent that an empty space is produced on one side liquid during the subsequent actuation of the sticking means. Experiments have shown, however, that this involves a loss of time great enough to prevent operation of the stickin means at the requisite speed.
According to the present inVention these drawbacks are eliminated by mounting the cylinder on an arm that is movable about the shaft for 'the lever supporting the brush. At the actuation of this aim, the motion thereof will be transmitted through the piston, piston rod and lever to the shaft for the latter andthe brush applied to the web without relative displaceof the piston and had to be filled with air or ment of the piston and cylinder and without the formation of a dead space.
In a particularly simple constructional embodiment of the invention only-a single cylinder hav- "ing a piston working against spring action is used.
The movable arm on which the cylinder is mounted may be actuated at will, preferably by means of a pawl-operated handwheel and eccentric.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of a three-roll reel in association with an improved apparatus for joining the webs of the respective rolls; v
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view similar to the right-hand portion of Fig. l and taken along line 2-2 in Fig. 3, the supporting frame structur being omitted;
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view looking at the left-hand portion of Fig. 2; a i
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the pawl for controlling the position of the handwheel and eccentric.
Referring to the drawing, the three-roll star 2 is rotatably mounted in the bearings of floor stand I. One leg of star 2 carries the runningdown roll 3, from which a web 4 or paper or the like is unwound during operation. When the web 4 has become substantially exhausted from roll 3, the .present invention is employed for sticking or adhesively securing the exhausting web to a new roll 5, said roll 5 being mounted upon another leg of star 2.,
In Fig. 1, the web on the running-down roll 3 has almost become exhausted, and is positioned so that the web, of the succeeding roll 5 may be adhesively secured to the exhausting web. The roll 3, when full, previously occupied the position now occupied by roll 5, in Fig. 1. During the unwinding of roll 3, however, the reel 2 was rotated in a. clockwise manner through an angle of 120 to the position shown, thus moving the periphery of the full roll 5 beneath band drive and also into close proximity to the web 4 extending from roll 3. A brush 8 is employed for adhesively securing the exhausting web 4 to the web of new roll 5, and a knife I8 is employed for severing the runing-down web.
The apparatus for producing the above-mentioned splicing operation is not a part of the present invention; however, a full explanation of such a device is given in my copending application, Serial No. 319,192, filed February 16, 1940.
As heretofore stated, it is not only necessary to move the brush 6 out of range of the runningdown roll as said roll passes from upper operating position to the lower position shown (Fig. 3), but it is also necessary to produce this brush movement without affecting the sensitivity of the brush operating means.
per web to a new roll 01' paper, in combination, a rotary carrier for the running down mil and w the new roll, operable to bring the new roll to Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the invenltl loosely rockable about the shaft 9 and moved. by a lever I02 eccentrically connected at I" with a handwheel Illl controllable by a pawl'ItIa, whichrpawl yieldingly engages ratchet lllib. By turning the handwheel I03, the arm IIII and ing any variation in the position oi. the piston II in the cylinder I". Thus, the lever I and brush 8 can be readily swung away from or towards the path of travel oi the web to permit rotation of the rotary frame and permit the brush to be brought quite close to the web so that it can be instantly operated by the fluid pressure piston when pasting is to take place under automatic control at the proper instant. As the automatic control of the brush is eflected by an electrically controlled fluid pressure piston and cylinder construction, the pasting takes pressure to said cylinder to operate the piston,
a movable armcarrying said cylinder, and means for operating said arm to withdraw or advance the sticking member relative to the rotary carrier. a

a movable arm carrying said cylinder and having a pivotal support coaxial with the pivot axis.
oi. said lever, and means for operating said arm to withdraw or advance the sticking member relative to the rotary carrier.
3. In a device for sticking a running down paper web. to a new roll of paper, in combination, a rotary carrier for the running down roll and the new roll, operable to bring the. new roll to position for sticking, a pressure applyingsticking member, a lever carrying said member and having a fixed fulcrum axis, a fluid pressure cylinder having a piston operable therein and connected to said lever to swing the lever about its flxed'axis, means for supplying fluid pressure '30 place without jar or shock and with a very ac-- to said, cylinder. to operate the piston, a movable arm carrying said cylinder and pivotally movable about said fixed axis, and means for operating said arm to withdraw or advance the sticking member relative to the rotary carrier.
4. In a device for sticking a running down paper web to a newroll of paper, in combination, a rotary carrier for the running down roll and the new roll, operable to bring the new roll to position for sticking, a pressure applying sticking member, a pivoted lever carrying said member, a fluid pressure cylinder having a piston connected to said lever for swinging the lever about its pivot axis, means for supplying fluid .pressure to said cylinder to operate the piston,
a movable arm carrying said cylinder and having a pivotal support coaxial with the pivot axis of said lever, a hand wheel, an eccentric operated by said hand wheel, and an eccentric crank operated by said eccentric and connected to said armfor swinging the arm on its pivotal sup- Port.
