H EAD REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,212, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed July 28, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT CARTWRIGH'I, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York. have invented a new and useful Improvement in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation taken through the line :19 ac, Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view taken through the line yy, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents one of the clamping-plates. Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view taken through the line z 2, Fig. 2.

The object of this invention is to furnish head-rests so constructed that they can be readily attached to the backs of chairs and other seats to support the heads of persons sitting upon the said seats, and which can be adjusted higher or lower and forward or backward, as circumstances may require.
A represents a U-shaped bar, one arm of which is made flat upon its inner side, and the other arm has a screw-hole formed through its end to receive the hand-screw B. The bar A has flanges formed upon its sides to fit into the T-shaped notch or recess formed in the upper edge of the clamping-plateG,which is thus hung upon the middle part ofthe clamping-bar A. At the middle part of the bar A its flanges are recessed, so that the plateO can be readily attached and detached, as may be required. Upon the side edges of the plate 0 are formed rearwardly-projecting flanges, as shown 'in Fig. 4. --At the rear side of the plate 0 is placed another. plate, D, against which the forward end of the hand-screw B rests, or to which it is swivele'd..
E are two wires, which are placed between the side parts of the plates 0 D, and are clamped between them bytightening the handscrew B. The same movement of the screw B also clamps the back of a chair or other seat between the plate 0 and the forward arm of other, and which are perforated longitudinally to receive the rod H.
To one end of the rod H is attached, or upon it is screwed, a head or nut, I, and upon theother' end of the rod H is placed a loose head orwasher, J, and a hand-nut, K.
Upon the rod H, between the flanged ends of the cylinders G and the heads I J, are placed and clamped the eyes formed upon the lower ends of the wires L, which incline from each other and have hooks formed upon their .upper ends to receive the plate M. The plate M receives the head of the person sitting upon the seat, and may be made of cloth, leather, rubber, or other suitable material.
With this construction,by loosening the nut K the wires L can be moved to adjust the head-supporter M forward or backward as desired.
The head-restthus constructed can be raised or lowered as the height of the seat-back or of the person using it may require, and can be moved forward or back to support the head in any desired position.
Having thus described *myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A head-rest constructed substantially as I herein shown and described, consisting ofthe double clamp A B (J D, the spring-wires E F, the clamp G H I J K, the wires L, and the flexible plate M, as set forth.
