" 1 claims- The present invention relates to new anduseful- -improvement's' in-head shields for use particularly in arc welding, grinding, painting, etc.', and has for-its primary object to'provide, in-a manner 'as' hereinafter set forth, a device-of this character comprising'a' hood-which includes a novel combination and arrangement of hinged e'y'e "protectors; either or both'of whichmay be conveniently swung open to inoperative position when desired.;'

Anotherv'ery' important object of the invention is to provide a head shield or hood of the aforementioned character comprising unique means for cooling the interior of the device by the introduction of air, thereby greatly promoting comfort.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a shield of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, stron durable, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.

All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a shield constructed in accordance with the present invention, portions of the device being broken away in section.

Figure 2 is a view in vice.

Figure 3 is a view in vertical section through the front portion of the device.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in bottom plan.

Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation of the fabric portion of the hood.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a hood I to receive the head of the mechanic. The hood I includes a fiber front 2 having mounted thereon a flexible back 3 of suitable fire resisting fabric. An adjustable head band 4 is mounted in the upper portion of the front 2 of the hood I for supporting said hood on the head.

The front 2 of the hood I has formed therein an opening 5 of suitable dimensions. Mounted on the front 2 around the opening 5 is a metallic frame 6 the side and bottom members of which are angular in cross section, said frame including a flat upper bar I.

Hingedly mounted on the protector-8 is an outer protector I3. The outerulprotecto r 13 mcludes a metallic plate M which is' susp'en'ded by spring hinges I5 on the upper'portion of the inner protector 8. The spring hinges 15 yield-- ingly urge the outer protector l3 upwardly toward open or inoperative positon. The metallic plate I4 has formed therein an opening or window I6 over which filter glasses H are mounted. A latch I8 on the lower portion of the hood front 2 releasably secures the outer shield I3 in closed or operative position on the inner shield 8.

Secured by clips or the like I9 in the upper portion of the hood I is an air hose 20 which may be connected to any convenient source of supply. The air hose 20 enters the hood I through the flexible back 3 thereof. At its forward end, the air hose 20 terminates in discharge branches 2| which are arranged to direct the air downwardly vover the eyes of the mechanic.

A strip of heavy fabric 22 is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the marginal portions of the front 2 of the hood I, said strip having mounted thereon buttons 23. The back 3 of the hood I includes overlapping half sections 24 which are buttoned together at 2B and which are secured to the front 2 by the buttons 23. The lower portions of the members 2 and 3 are shaped to accommodate the neck of the mechanic. Toward this end, the lower edges of the fabric sections 24 are provided with hems 25 which enclose elastic bands or straps 26. The elastic bands 26 contract or gather the lower portions of the fabric hood sections 24 snugly about the neck of the mechanic.

In use, when the mechanic is welding, the inner and outer protectors 8 and I3 are both in lowered or operative positions over the opening 5 in the front 2 of the hood I. When the weld as been made, and the mechanic desires to grind off flashings from the weld, he simply disengages the latch I8 from the lower or free end of the door or plate I4 for permitting the spring hinges I5 to swing the outer protector I3 upwardly to raised or inoperative position, leaving the inner protector 8 in operative position to function as a goggle. When, for any reason, the mechanic desires access to his face or nose, he may conhead shield constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

A head shield of the character described comprising-a hood having an opening in the front thereof, a metallic frame on the hood around the 20 opening, an inner protector comprising a glass hingedly suspended in the frame and engageable with the hood over the opening, an outer protector mounted on the inner protector, said outer protector including an opaque plate hingedly sus pended on the inner protector, said plate having I an opening therein aligned with the first-named opening, filter glasses on the plate over the second-named opening, and means for releasably securing said outer protector in operative position.
