The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to gun sights of the ring type embodying inner and outer sighting centers interconnected by horizontal and vertical arms and having a base portion joined to the outer sighting center for connecting the sight to a gun.
Gun sights of the type to which this invention relates, formerly have embodied the elements mentioned as separate parts required to be joined together in some manner as by welding or the like. Such a method of manufacturing is expensive and requires a considerable amount of time as will be apparent.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a gun sight of the type referred to, and `embodying the elements mentioned, which is formed in a Very simple, inexpensive and expeditious manner by stamping the same out of a single piece or sheet of metal or other suitable material.

Now referring to the drawing for a detailed description of the invention, there is illustrated a gun sight comprising an outer sighting ring I, and an inner sighting ring or center 2, said centers being connected together by vertical arms 3 and 4 and horizontal arms 5 and 6. The gun sight includes a base 7 connected with the outer sighting center I.
The former method of making such a gun sight required the assembling of separately preformed elements comprising an outer sighting center, an inner sighting center, arms for connecting said centers, and a base. These separately preformed elements were required to be joined together in some manner, as by welding each of the arms to the inner and outer sighting centers, and welding the outer sighting center to the base. Obviously this was a time consuming and expensive process.
My invention contemplates the manufacture of the gun sight illustrated complete in a single operation by stamping the same by means of a suitable die out of a single piece or sheet of metal or other suitable material.
The gun sight illustrated is formed by stamping the same entirely out of a single piece or sheet of metal or other suitable material by means of a die in such a manner that the die removes portions of the material intermediate the sighting centers I and 2, leaving only the arms 3, 4, 5 and 6 interconnecting said centers, and in such a manner that the die bends the marginal edges of the original blanks so as to provide a flange' 8 bent at an angle to the plane of the surface X of the original blank, said ilange 8 constituting one side 8a of the base 'I and extending circumferentially around the outer sighting center as indicated at 8b and thence merging again into the base 'l to constitute the other side 8c of the latter.
In the stamping process of forming the gun sight of my invention, flange extensions 9 and l0 are provided which extend outwardly from the base 'l and are bent at an angle to the rest of the flange. These flange extensions comprising the feet or lugs 9 and I0 are provided with apertures 9a and Illa respectively for facilitating the securing of the gun sight to a gun in position for use.
It will be apparent that the gun sight made according to my invention may be made very cheaply and expeditiously by the method of stamping the same out of a single blank of material to form a stifiened outer sighting center circle and sides and feet for the base, providing a very rigid and strong construction, and eliminating the time consuming and expensive processes of preforming the separate elements and then tediously joining said elements together.
Having now described my invention and the manner in which the same may be used, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a gun sight made of a unitary stamping consisting of a single sheet of material comprising an outer sighting ring, an inner sighting ring, said rings being substantially concentric, arms interconnecting said rings, and a base merging with said outer ring, a ,portion of the material adjacent the marginal edges of the base and of the outer ring forming a continuous flange constituting the sides of the base and extending around the outer ring.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a gun sight made of a unitary stamping consisting of a single sheet of material comprising an outer sighting ring, an inner sighting ring, said rings being substantially concentric, arms interconnecting and merging with said rings, and a, base merging with said outer ring, a portion of the material adjacent the marginal edges of the base and the i outer ring forming a continuous flange constitut- HOBERT L.
