Patented Apr. 25, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE 4 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in'hand scrapers of the general type forming the subject matter of my U. S. Patent No. 2,317,041, dated April 20, 1943, and over which the instant invenfacturing and replacement costs.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will b readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a preferred form of my improved scraper,
Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the same,
Figure 3 is a view in longitudinal section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a view in end elevation looking at the front end of the scraper,
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the scraper blade detached,
Figure 6 is a view in perspective of a modified form of the scraper blade,
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a modified form of holder for the modified form of blade,
Figure 8 is a view in front elevation of the modified form of holder and blade,
Figure 9 is a view in perspective of another modified form of scraper blade,
Figure 10 is a fragmentary View in side elevation of still another modified form of holder and scraper blade,
Figure 11 is a, fragmentary view in top plan of the holder and blade shown in Figure 10, and
Figure 12 is a view in perspective of the modified form of scraper blade shown in Figures 10 form my improved scraper comprises a holder designated generally I and including a body part 2, a handle 3, and a pair of upper and lower clamping plates 4, 5 for the scraper blade 6.
The body part is of elongated form and preferably made of wood, with a rounded rear end, as
at 1, concave side portions 8 facilitating gripping the same with the hand, and a widened front end 9 having rabbeted top and bottom, curved faces I0, H converging to a sharp straight front" edge l2 and terminating at the juncture thereof with the remainder of the body part in shoulders I3, M, respectively. In the longitudinal center thereof, a pair of bolt holes I5 are provided in the body part 2 which open onto the top and bottom of said body part and are arranged one adjacent the transverse center of said body part and the other adjacent the rear end of said part. The bolt holes !5 are of keyhole form. A pair of countersinks I6 are provided in the top of the body part 2 around the bolt holes I5, and a pair' of thin metal, keyhole wear plates I! are fixed in said countersinks l 6 below the top of the body part, as at l8, said plates surrounding the upper ends of the bolt holes l5.
The handle 3 is of gooseneck form and suitable wood with an enlarged flat, top front end l9 fitting flat against the bottom of the body part 2 from approximately the transverse center to the rear end of said body part. A pair of flat headed screw bolts 20 extend downwardly through the smaller parts of th bolt holes l5, with heads bearing on the plates l1, said bolts extending into bores 2! in the head l9 and being secured there-' in by nuts 22 countersunk in-enlarged ends 23 of said bores. The handle 3, proper, slopes from the head l9 and from the body part 2 rearwardly and downwardly with a gradual inclination.
As will be apparent, by merely loosening the bolts 20 and shoving the handle 3 in a direction to enter the bolts in the larger parts of the bolt holes I5, said bolts may be withdrawn out of said bolt holes and the handle 3 thus easily and quickly detached, as occasion may require.
Thescraper blade I5 is rectangular in shape, with a central, transversely S-shaped. channel forming portion 24 and opposite side edge cutting portions 25 curved transversely oppositely, relatively, so that said portions 25 are slightly hooked transversely in opposite directions with respect to each other.
The clamping plates 4, 5 seat against the faces H], I l and converge forwardly, with the rear edges thereof seating against the shoulders i3, is, and said plates extend across the front end 9 of the body part 2 from side to side thereof, and forwardly of said end. The upper plate 4 is formed along its front edge with a pair of transversely extending, rounded ribs 26 interfitting with the channel-forming portions 24 on the top side of the scraper blade 6, and the lower clamping plate 5 is provided with a front edge groove 2?, and a front edge rib 28, which interfits with said channel-forming portion 24 of said blade 6 on the bottom side of the said plate. Screws 23 adjacent the rear edges of said plates 4, 5 secure the same to the front end 9 of the body part 2. The upper plate 4 clears the top face l0, forwardly of its attaching screws 29, so that it may be flexed toward the lower plate 25 to clampingly engage the ribs 26 thereon and the groove 21 and rib 28 of the lower plate with opposite sides of the scraper blade 6. As best shown in Figures 1 and 3, the ribs 26 of the upper plate 4 and the groove 27 and rib 28 of the lower plate 5 mate with the portion 24 of the blade 6 in a plane inclined downwardly and forwardly of the horizontal plane of the body part 2, so that a leading side portion 25 of the blade 6 extends below the lower clamping plate 5 and curvesdownwardly and rearwardly relative thereto. The upper plate 4 is concaved in the rear of the ribs 26, as at 35, for clearance between said plate and the top face It, to accommodate the other side portion 25 of said blade 6 between said upper plate and said face. A single screw bolt 3| extends through the clamping plates 4, 5 and through the front end 9 of the body part 2, forwardly of the screws 29, and in the longitudinal center of the body part, and provides for clamping the plates 4, 5 against the scraper blade 5, said bolt having its head and nut end suitably countersunk in said plates.
Obviously, the described scraper blade 5 may be reversed between the plates 4, 5 for use of either cutting side portion 25, as desired, and said blade is designed for flat scraping, as on floors or the like.
In the modified form of scraper shown in Figures 6, '7 and 8, the scraper blade 32 is generally rectangular, with a pair of closely spaced, channel-forming ribs 33 extending along each face thereof upon opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the blade, and said blade is generally 8- shaped transversely to provide opposite side cutting portions 34 transversely curved oppositely, relatively, one of which is straight edged for flat scraping, and the other of which has a longitudinally convex edge for scraping, for instance, molding, not shown. The upper clamping plate 35, in this instance, is formed with a pair of grooves 35 in the front edge thereof for fitting over the ribs 33 on one side of the scraper blade 32, and the lower clamping plate 35 is provided with a transverse, front edge rib 3'! fitting in between the ribs 33 on the other side of said blade, and also with a groove 38 adjacent to and parallel with said rib and fitting over the rib 33 on said other side of the scraper blade. The clamping plates 35, 31, in this instance, clamp the blade 32 in a plane inclined forwardly and upwardly of the horizontal plane of the body part 39 to dispose a cutting side of the blade 32 well forwardly of the plates 35, 31, and the front edge of the upper clamping plate 35 is thickened and extends forwardly past the lower clamping plate 31 to adequately back the blade 32 under downward pressure of the scraper against the work. Otherwise, the construction and arrangement is substantially as described with reference to the first described form of the invention.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 9, a scraper blade 40 is provided of generally rectangular shape, in edge contour, and including a central, longitudinal, channel-forming, transversely U-shaped rib 4i, and a pair of coplanar, flat portions 42 upon opposite sides of said rib terminating in oblique angled, straight, side cutting portions 42 on one and the same side of said blade.
In Figures 10 and 1 a modified form of scraper blade is provided in which the side cutting portions 42, such as shown inFigure 9, are eliminated, and flat portions 44 upon opposite sides of a rib 45, similar to rib 4|, terminate in cutting edges 46, 41, the edge 46 being convex for use on molding and the like, and the edge 41 being straight for flat scraping. In this form of the invention, the upper clamping plate is provided with a front edge, downwardly and rearwardly turned rib 49 adapted to fit into the channel so formed by the rib 45, and the lower clamping plate 51 is formed with a front edge groove 52 for receiving said rib '45, the rib 49 and groove 52 clampin the blade so that its fiat, coplanar, side cutting portions 43 incline forwardly and downwardly of the horizontal plane of the body part 53. The top face 54 of the front end 55 of said body part 53 is notched transversely, as at 56, and clears the upper plate 48 so that a flat portion 43 of th blad may be accommodated between said plate 48 and said end 55, or a flat portion 42 and cutting portion 42' of the blade 40. Also, in this form of the invention, the upper clamping plate 48 coacts with a portion of the top face 54 to clamp a fiat portion of the blade therebetween, and the leading edge of the front end 55 is grooved across the same, as at 55, to seat the rib 45, or rib 4|, as the case maybe.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention Without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
