CHART HOLDER AND PROTECTOR Filed Aug. 16, 1940 DAILY M HND FEED R A 1 'Murejicyfert ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 15, 1941 .UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE ,Application August 16,1940, serial No. 352,946
(omai- 44) l 4 Claims.
This invention relates to chart holders, and its general object is to provide a chart or record holder. that is primarily designed for holding a relatively large record blank upon which entries are frequently made, over a relatively great period of time, such as for example a dairy chart blank of the type now in general use for keeping daily milking and feeding records of cows, and upon which entries are made at least twice a day for a period of a month. Due to the size of the blank referred to, and the frequent use thereof, difficulty is experienced in making the entries and in endeavoring to prevent it from becoming damaged and soiled, but by the use of my holder the blank is held Vfixed against a convenient writing surface and means is provided for protecting the blank or chart against dirt, dust and foreign matter or from becoming soiled even when making entries thereon.
A further object is to provide a chart holder that includes means for detachably securing a chart thereto, and for holding the same against casual removal or displacement, and the protecting means is adjustable with respect to the entry receiving spaces for disposal in the path of the hand of the user when making the entries, to act as a shield therefor to prevent the hand from engaging the chart.
Another object is to provide a chart holder that includes illuminating means as well as means for holding a writing implement such as a pencil when not in use.
A still further object is to provide a chart holder, that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely eflicient in use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and speccally pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and inwhich:
Figure 1 is a front view of the chart holder that forms the subject matter of the present invention, with two types of dairy record blanks secured thereto.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of the holder.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken therethrough.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be integral with the upper end thereof, a forwardly and downwardly curved hood 2 that terminates in upwardly curved beaded portions providing v ledges 3 for receiving writing implements such as pencils. The hood has a centrally disposed flanged opening 4 therein providing a seat for a pull chain type lamp fixture 5 of a lamp bulb I for illuminating the charts, as will be apparent.
Secured to the upper end of the backing plate at the juncture of thefhood therewith is a pair of spaced spring clips 'I provided with depending clamping tongues 8 and secured to the plate along its lower edge is a spacing strip 9 having secured thereto a pair of clamping tongues IU held in spaced relation with respect to the 'front face of the plate I by the strip 9, as best shown in Figure 3. Cooperating with the upper and lower clamping tongues 8 and I0 for securing blanks or charts A and B to and against the plate I is a pair of elongated spring clips secured between their ends to a spacing strip Il to provide clamping tongues I2 and I2', the strip II being fixed to the plate I transversely thereof, as clearly shown in Figure 1. It will be noted that the blank A is of the type used for keeping a daily milking and feeding record of cows and the blank B is for keeping a breeding record, and while I have illustrated my holder as having blanks of that character applied thereto, it will be obvious that blanks for keeping records of any kind can be used therewith.
Formed on the side edges of the plate I for the major portion of its length are forwardly directed relatively narrow flanges I3 having upwardly inclined notches I4 therein for receiving the ends of a rod I5 that is mounted in a hem I6 at one end of an apron I1 which has its opposite end secured to the rear face of the plate I at the lower end of the latter, as best shown in Figure 3. The apron may be made from any suitable flexible sheet material, such as leather, canvas or the like and is of a width substantially co-extensive to that of the plate I for fitting between the flanges I3 and of a length to cover the major portion of the front face thereof for protecting the blanks or charts, against dirt, dust and foreign matter, as Well as from becoming soiled when making entries thereon, it being obvious that the apron is adjustable with respect to the entry spaces on the. blank, so that when making entries therein,
the writers hand will contact the apron and not the blank.
The holder is to be disposed against a Wall or the like and suspended from suitable securing means such as a nail. For that purpose, I provide a hanger tab or tabs I8 having openings I9 for receiving nails or the like, as best shown in Figure 3.
From the above description and the disclosure in the drawing, it will be obvious that when entries are made in any of the entry spaces, the rod l is disposed in the aligned notches just below the space in which an entry is to be made, so that the hand of the writer will contact the ap-ron and after the entry or entries have been made, the
apron is disposed to its uppermost protecting position, so that all of the lower chart as well as the major portion of the upper chart is covered, as best shown in Figure 1. It will of course be understood that the apron can be made of a length to completely cover both of the charts when not 1n use.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A chart holder comprising a backing plate, means for detachably securing record keeping blanks, against the plate for making entries thereon, a protecting apron for the blanks and made from flexible sheet material, said apron having one end secured to the lower end of the plate, and
means for attaching the opposite end of the apron for disposal of the latter in covering relation with respect to the blanks at various positions thereon.
2. A chart holder comprising a backing plate of elongated rectangular formation, means for detachably securing record keeping blanks against the plate for making entries thereon, flanges formed on the sides of the plate and extending forwardly therefrom, said flanges having a plurality of 'aligned notches therein along the length thereof, a protecting apron for the blanks and made from flexible sheet material, said apron having one end secured to the lower end of the 5 tions thereon.
3. A chart holder comprising a backing plate of elongated rectangular formation, clamping tongues associated with the plate and for detachably securing record keeping blanks against 10 the plate for making entries thereon, forwardly directed flanges formed on the sides of the plate and having a plurality of upwardly inclined notches therein, the notches of one flange being aligned with those of the other flange, a protecting apron for the blanks and made from flexible sheet material, said apron having one end secured to the lower end of the plate, a hem at the opposite end of the apron, and a rod mounted in the hem and extending beyond the ends thereof to be received in any of the aligned notches for disposal of the apron in covering relation with respect to the blanks at various positions thereon.
4. A chart holder comprising a backing plate of elongated formation, clamping tongues associated with the plate and spaced therefrom for receiving record keeping blanks to hold the latter against the vplate for making entries thereon, forwardly directed flanges formed on the sides of the plate and having a plurality of upwardly inclined goinotches therein, the notches of one flange being aligned with those of the other flange, a protecting apron for the blanks and made from flexible sheet material, said apron having one end secured to the rear face of the plate at the lower 5end thereof, a hem at the opposite end of the apron, a rod mounted in the hem and extending beyond the ends thereof to be received in any of the aligned notches for disposal of the apron in covering relation with respect to the blanks at various positions thereon, a hood formed on the upper end of the plate and forwardly directed therefrom in downwardly curved formation, writing implement receiving ledge means on the hood, illuminating means secured to the hood, and
means for suspending the holder from suitable supporting means and secured to the rear face of the plate.
