. and associated lens fastening means of such novel '10 form and cooperative association that the outwardly presented face of said strap structure isunblemished by exposed portions of the associated lens fastening means, but rather whereby the latter are completely concealed, and the surface of the outwardly presented face of the strap structure is left either smooth and unbroken or subject to engraved ornamentation of any desired design and character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel lens anchoring stud and means for interlocking the same to the inner face portionof the outwardly presented arm of the strap structure, whereby the stud may be first assembled with a lens by insertion in the eye or attachment opening of the latter, and then such assembly slid between and into the embrace of the strap arms while at the same time interlocking the stud to the outer arm, whereupon the thus assembled parts may be secured together by a fastening screw adapted to pass through the perforate inner strap'arm into threaded engagement with said stud.
Other objects of this invention, not at this time,
and strap structure; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal hori-' zontal section, taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 1, but drawn on an enlarged scale; Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section, taken on line 55 in Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal horizontal section of the parts as disposed preparatory to assembling.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views, to indicate co'rresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, the novel strap 7 structure comprises a bifurcate member formed by spaced apart front and rear strap arms it and II joined at their rearward ends by a butt portion i2 adapted to extend across the edge of a 5 lens L to which the strap structure is applied. Extending upwardly and downwardly respectively from said butt portion H2, in the plane of the lens edge, are the upper and lower abutment lugs or members 13 and I4, by which the edge of the lens L, as embraced by the strap structure, is supported so as to hold the lens. against rocking displacement or play. Suitably attached to and extending from the exterior portion of said butt portion l2 are desired elements of a rimless ophthalmic mounting, such 6. g. as a center piece or bridge l5 and a supporting arm is by which the nose-pad or guard ll is carried. It will be understood that other elements of a mounting, such as temple end pieces, etc. (not shown), may be supported from a strapgstructure according to this invention, where the mounting'is of a type requiring or including such elements.
The front strap arm is provided in its inner face portion with a recess or chamber it behind its outer face portion and open endwise toward the free end of said strap arm, said chamber being bounded on its lens facing'side with spaced upper and lower flanges l9 and 2B, the opposed ,free margins of which define a slot-way 2!. The interior end of said recess or chamber is is terminated by a stop shoulder 22. The reference character '23 indicates a stud member having an axial internally screwthreaded bore 24, and being further provided at one end with an enlarged, fiat plate-like head 25 of a thickness corresponding to the space dimension of the recess or chamber l3 intermediate the outer face portion of the strap arm l0 and the flanges I9-20. Said stud member 23 is adapted for insertion through an eye or attachment opening 26 with which the lens L is provided; said stud being entered in said opening 26 from the front face of said lens so that the head 25 of the stud member is disposed adjacent said front face.
The rear strap arm H is provided with an opening 21, preferably having a countersunk seat 28 at its outer end. A fastening screw 29 is insertable through said opening 21, and is provided with a slotted head 3!] to engage said seat 28.
To assemble a lens L and the novel strap structure together, the stud member 23 is first inserted in the eye or attachment opening 26 of the lens as above described, and as shown in Fig. 6, whereupon the butt edge of the lens is opposed to the space S (see Fig. 6) intermediate the strap arms l and II; the stud member 23 being so disposed as to align its head 25 with the open end of the recess or chamber l8. This having been done, the lens L is thrust endwise (in the direction of the arrow :0 in Fig. 6), thereby entering the butt edge of the lens in the space S between the strap arms l0 and H until stopped against the abutment lugs or members l3--|4, while at the same time the head 25 of the stud member 23 is moved into the recess or chamber I8 and beneath the flanges Ill-20; the shank of said stud member passing freely through the slot-way 2| between said flanges. In this manner the stud member and front strap arm Ill are interlocked together, and the bore 24 of the former is brought into alignment with the opening 21 of the opposite strap arm II. The parts as thus assembled are thereupon secured against separation by screwing home the fastening screw 29, which is passed through the opening 21 of strap arm II, and screwed into the internally threaded bore 24 of the stud member 23. Preferably said head 25 of the stud member 23 is of polygonal peripheral shape, whereby engagement thereof with the sides of the recess or chamber l8 will retain the stud member 23 against rotation when the fastening screw 29 is driven home therein. In this manner, the respective strap arms In and I I are securely tied one to the other through the intermediate stud member 23, and brought into firmly embracing relation to the opposite faces of the lens L, while the latter is anchor-ed against outward displacement from such relation by the stud members engagement therewith through the eye or attachment opening 26.
It will be obvious that a very simple and easily manipulatable lens attaching and holding means is provided by the novel strap structure; while, at the same time, the front or exposed face of the outer strap member is in no way defaced by exposure of fastening screws, rivets or like fastening means, since the stud member 23 is interlocked with said outer strap arm Ill in such manner as to be wholly concealed, while never.- theless in a manner providing a secure and emcient interlocked attachment thereto.
It will be understood that various changes could be made in the novel strap structure of this invention without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the following claims. It is therefore intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. A lens strap structure for ophthalmic mountings comprising, spaced rigid strap arms to receive a lens therebetween, the rearwardly presented strap arm having an opening therethrough, the outwardly presented strap arm having an endwise open recess at the back thereof, a stud member having an internally screwthreaded bore insertable into the attachment opening of the lens so as to be carried by said lens, said stud member being of a length less than the thickness of the lens, said stud member having at one end an enlarged head of polygonal shape adapted to slidingly enter said recess when the lens carrying said stud member is inserted between said spaced strap arms, whereby said head is embraced and held by the sides of said recess to thereby retain said stud member against rotative displacement, and a headed fastening screw adapted to be passed through the opening of said rearwardly presented strap arm to screw into the bore of said stud member.
2. A lens strap structure for ophthalmic mountings comprising, spaced front and rear rigid strap arms to receive a lens therebetween, the rear strap arm having an opening therethrough, the front strap arm having an endwise open recess bounded by front and rear face walls, the rear face wall of which is provided with an endwise open slot-way laterally open to said recess, a stud member having an internally screwthreadedbore and a head of polygonal shape at one end, said stud member being carried in the attachment opening of the lens and extending from the outer face side of the latter so as to dispose said head adjacent thereto, said head being adapted to enter said recess and the stud member through said slot-way when the lens carrying said stud member is inserted between the strap arms, whereby said head is embraced by said front strap arm recess so as to hold the same and said stud member against rotation while at the same time concealing said head behind the front face wall of said front strap arm, and a fastening screw adapted to be passed through the rear strap arm opening to screw into the bore of said stud member.
