(Cl. ill-5 0) Our invention relates to filming machines, and lhas for its object the provision of a new and improved form and arrangement of parts for applying a thin coat of synthetic resin upon the face of a panel of wood or the like. To this end, it is one of the objects of our invention to provide improved means for feeding the resin smoothly and evenly to the faces of two oppositely disposed cooperating applying rolls in layers of controlled thickness, such rolls being preferably held normally at an adjusted distance apart to suit panels of different thicknesses. It ls particularly one of the objects of our invention to provide improved means for picking up a supply of resin or other glue from a tank or trough for application upon the face of the applying roll, the application of the resin to such applying roll being preferably eiected through the medium of an auxiliary roll which is held in adjustable pressure relationship to the applying roll for controlling the thickness of the layer of resin applied.
It is one of the objects of our invention to provide an improved arrangement of pick-up roll '2J mechanism, with such roll located directly in a glue tank so as to apply glue therefrom to the applying roll through the medium of an intermediate auxiliary roll or otherwise, the arrangement preferably to be such that the pick-up roll 39 is adjustable toward its cooperating roll into frictiopal driving relation therewith for applying resin tliereto or adjustable alternatively away from said cooperating roll for terminating .the feed of resin thereto. For accomplishing these ends, it is oneof the objects of our invention to provide an improved form of pick-up roll for assuring the desired driving relation between such pick-up roll and its cooperating roll for securing the necessary application of resin to said 40 cooperating roll. l o
It is another object of our invention .to provide an improved arrangement of the working parts of our machine whereby the operation of cleaning such working parts may be madeas easy as 45 possible, and whereby the surplus resin on the rolls at the end of a period of operation may be fed back into the trough or other receptacle by Athe operation of the cleaning means. It is another object of our invention to provide an im- 51) proved arrangement of the cooperating feeding and applying parts whereby the thicli'i'iessv of the film of resin may be regulated .with such parts so arranged as to permit the passage of sawdust or other foreign particles of small size 53 through the feeding mechanism for deposit o'n the panels whereby the accumulation of sawdust and the like in the resin trough or other receptacle may be prevented.,
It is another object of our invention to im 00 prove machines of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out. The preferred means by which we have accomplished our several objects are illustrated in rthe drawings and are hereinafter specically described. Referring now to the several ilguresof the drawings in which corresponding parts arelin-v dicated by the same vreference characters, ills and il indicate frame standards held inspaced relation to each other byV a plurality of cross bars l2. Near the upper end of the framework at the front of the machine, a table I3 isV removably mounted in position upon two of the cross bars l2 extending toward two applicator 35 rolls I4 and I5 rotatably mounted in the framework in position to receiver a wooden panel i! from the table'` I3 as shown in Fig. '7. In the arrangement shown, the applicator roll Il is mounted upon a heavy shaft I'l journaled in a block i8. VDirectly beneath the intermediate roll I8 there is mounted 55 a receptacle 23 adapted to hold a supply of glue, the receptacle being held in position by means of hooks 24. Within the receptacle 2l, we have provided a pick-up roll 25 which is journaledbetween arms 26 nxedly mounted upon a rock oq iii shaft 21 which in turn is Journaled between the standards Iii and II of the framework. A spring 2l is connected with the lower end of an arm 29 rigidly mounted upon the shaft 21 so as to serve normally to hold the pick-up roll 25 in engagement with the intermediate roll Il. As is best shown in Fig. 2, a lever 30 is mounted upon the framework adjacent to the arm 29, having a cam portion 3i thereon adapted by engagement with the arm 29 to give the shaft 21 a rocking movement for moving the roll 25 out of engagement with the intermediate roll` I9 against the action of the spring 2l. As will be readily understood, when the lever lil is moved upwardly in counter-clockwise direction in Fig. 2 the cam 3i is carried out of engagement with the arm 2l so as to permit the spring 28 to carry the roll 2l upwardly into engagement with the intermediate roll Ii.
Adjacent to the applicator roll I5. we have provided a second intermediate roll 22 mounted upon a shaft 33 Journaied in blocks 34 carried by the framework. Beneath the intermediate roll I2, 'we have provided a receptacle 2l adapted to hold a supply of glue, being removably supported in position by means of hooks 34. Within the receptacle 35, we have mounted a pick-up roll $1 which is journaled between arms 3l rigidly mounted upon a rock shaft I9 journaled between the standards I0 and Il. As is best shown in Fig. 2. a spring 4l connected with the lower end of an arm 4I mounted rigidly upon the shaft 3l serves normally to hold the shaft turned in the direction for holding the roll 31 in engagement with the intermediate roll 32. Means is provided for moving the roll I1 out of engagement with the intermediate roll 32 against the action of the spring 40, such means comprising a lever 42 pivotally mounted adjacent to the arm 4I and having a cam 4l thereon adapted by the stroke of the lever 42 into the position as shown in Fig. 2 to engage the arm 4| and to move it in the direction for carrying the roll 31 out of engagement with thev roll 32.
'I'he means for mounting the roll II in position comprises a pair of arms 44 and 4l which are pivotally mounted upon the shaft Il at opposite sides of the machine, the end portions of the arms 44 and 4B being rigidly connected together by means of cross bars 4I and 41. The roll I5 is mounted upon said arms 44 and 4I by means of a shaft 48 journaled in blocks 4l which are adjustable longitudinally of said arms by means of screws B0. Springs II serve normally to hold the roll I5 moved toward the left in Fig. 2 out of engagement with the roll 32.
Means is provided for'holding the applicator roll Il in adjusted position with respect to the applicator roll I4. This means comprises two adjustableiinks l2 at opposite ends of the machine, each of said links in the arrangement shown comprising two parts. one pivotally connected with the supporting arms for the roll il and the other part pivotally connected with the framework of the machine. As is best shown in Fig. 8, each of the links comprises a socket member 53 pivotally mounted upon the framework adapted to receive a bolt 54 loosely therein, the bolt 54 being connected by means of screwv member 53. -As will be readily understood, the
The means for driving the, applicator rolls I4 and I5 and their connected parts comprises a motor ll. This motor is connected with a shaft 59 by means of a sprocket chain 60 and sprocket gears 6I and 42, the sprocket gear i! being connected with the motor through a gear box 63. The sliaft 59 is provided with a pinion 64 thereon in mesh with a gear 6I mounted upon a shaft 46 (see Fig. 2) which shaft 84 in turn is provided with a pinion l1 in mesh with a gear 48 flxedly mounted upon the shaft I1 of the applicator roll I4. The arrangement is such that the applicator roll I4 is driven in counter-clockwise direction in Fig. 7. The gear l! is likewise in mesh with a gear Il fixedly mounted upon the shaft 2l of the intermediate roll I 9.
The shaft I1 is connected with the shaft I3 by means of a sprocket chain 10 cooperating with a sprocket gear 1I on the shaft I1 and a sprocket gear 12 upon the shaft u. Intermeshing gears 13 and 14 mounted upon the shafts Il and 4l respectively serve to.drive the applicator roll I! from the roll I! in the direction for cooperation with the roll I4 for forwarding a panel between the two applicator rolls. The arrangement is such that when the springs 41 are disconnected from the arms 44 and 4l the applicator roll I i can be swung upwardly away from the applicator roll I4 without disturbing the driving connection between the rolls Il and 32.
Ihearrangement is such that the pick-up rolls 2l and I1 are driven by frictional engagement with the intermediate rolls Il and I2 respectively. Por insuring this result. we have provided each of the pick-up rolls with a spiral rib 1l extending a plurality of times around the roll, such rib being mounted within a spiral groove 16, as is best shown in Fig. 5, The rib 1I preferably comprises a plurality of layers of material, in the arrangement shown three layers of rubber 11 and two layers of fabric 1l being employed. We have found in the use of the machine that our pick-up rolls provided with the spiral ribs as described are very effective for picking up` a supply of glue from the receptacles in which the pick-up rolls are located so as to apply the glue evenly and smoothly about the intermediate rolls Il and I2. The arrangement is such that the pick-up rolls are driven effectively by frictional engagement with the intermediate rolls so long as the pick-up rolls are held in their raised position by the springs 2l and 40. Whenever it is desired to stop the feed of glue to the intermediate rolls I! and i2, this is readily effected by an operative stroke of the levers 3l and 42 to the positions as shown in Fig. 2. y
Scraper means is provided in connection with each of the intermediate rolls II and 32. This means comprises a scraper bar 1l carried by arms 80 loosely mounted upon the rock `shaft 21 (see Fig. 1), such bar being movable by means of a handle ll revolubly mounted upon said'shaft 21. 70
By downward pressure upon the handle II, the bar 18 is held in engagement with the face of the intermediate roll i9 for cleaning the glue therefrom for delivery to the receptacle immediately below. Upon a plurality of rotations of u malaise the ron n, both the m11 u and the applicator vroll I4 can be effectively cleaned through the medium of the scraper '19. A similar arrangement is provided in connection with the roll 32, comprisingl a scraper bar l2 carried by arms 83 loosely mounted upon the rock shait 39, the movement oi the scraper bar I2 being eiiected through the medium of a lever 84 also loosely mounted upon the rock shaft l! at its middle int. poWith a supply of glue provided in each of the receptacles!! and 3i. and with the applicator 4rolls Il and II being driven in cooperative relation ior carrying a panel between them toward' the left in Fig. 7, a panel I8 is pushed forward from the table' I3 into thel bite of the rolls Il and Il. Upon the movement oi the panel between the applicator rolls Il and I5, both fac oi the panel are covered evenly and smoothly with Vlayers of glueY from the applicator rolls, the thickness of the layers oi glue being controlled by the adjustment oi the intermediate rolls Il and 3! transversely with respect to the applicator rolls.
In the operation of the machine, the pick-up rolls 25 and 31 are adapted to apply the glue to the faces of the intermediate rolls i9 and l2 much more rapidly than is normally desired for use upon the panels passing through the machine. With each of the pick-up rolls providing a heavy nlm of glue upon the face of the adjacent intermediate roll, and with the ad- Justment oi' the intermediate roll .such that only a very limited thickness oi film can pass downwardly between the intermediate roll and its cooperating applicator roll, a supply or body of glue is\very quickly accumulated in the troughlike receptacle between the upper portion oi' the intermediate roll and the upper portion oi the applicator roll. Under these circumstances, it is necessary that the attendant watch the accumulation oi glue in the trough-like receptacle between the rolls and stop the feed of glue to the intermediate roll in time to preventv the delivery of an excessive amount of the glue into such trough-like receptacle. For making the trough-like receptacles between the rolls effective for holding the glue in position, we have provided end closure plates 85 and B6 at the `ends of the intermediate roll I3 and end closure plates 81 and 88 at the ends of the intermediate roll 32. Each of these end closure plates bears against the end oi' an intermediate roll and the end of the adjacent applicator roll, being supported byengagement with the shafts of said rolls, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 7, and being held in position by means of a spring 88. The
arrangement is such that the plates can be very easily and quickly removed for cleaning whenever desired.
In the arrangement shown, each of the applicator rolls and its adjacent intermediate roll are located alongside of each kother and each oi the rolls is driven in the direction to carry its upper portion toward the upper portion of proved machines we'ha've been mainly ooncerned with the application oi' liquid glue to the surfaces of panels and thelike. Our machines may be well suited for the application of coatings of other materials. y The term glue is used, therefore, in our specification and in the claims as representative of the kind of coat.- ing materialsrthat may be appliedby Vthe use of our machines.
.While we prefer to employ the form o! arrangement as shown in our drawings and as above described, it is to be understood that our invention is not limited to the'arrangement as shown and described .except so far as the claims may be so limited, it being understood that changes might well be made in the `form* and arrangement of the parts without departing from our invention.
We claim: l

In a filming machine, the combination of a frame, a roll rotatably mounted in said frame, a second roll rotatably mounted in said frame adjacent to said first named roll at one side thereof, closure means for the trough-like receptacle between the upper portions of said two rolls, a second receptacle adapted to'hold a supply of glue ,ofvglue in said iirst named receptacle, and means for driving said .first named two rolls serving to apply a ,filmer glue fromsaid second roll and said first named receptacle to the face of said first named roll.
8. 11. In a nlming machine, the combination of a frame, a roll rotatably mounted in said frame, a receptacle adapted lto hold a supply oi' glue below said noli, a second roll rotatably mounted in said receptacle and movable alternatively into and out of frictions! engagementwith said first named roll forapplying a film of glue from the receptacle to the face rof said nrst named roll when in frictional engagement therewith, means for moving said second roll into and out of engagement with said iirst named roll, and means for driving said first named roll, said second roll having a spiral rib extending a plurality of times about the roll adapted by engagement with said rst named roll to cause said second roll to rotate for applying a film of glue from the recepta- `cle to the face of said flrstnamed roll.
12. In a iilming machine, the combination of a frame, a roll rotatably mounted in said frame, a receptacle adapted to hold a supply of glue below said roll, a second roll rotatably mounted in said receptacle and movable alternatively into and out of frictional engagement with said first named roll for applying a film of glue from the receptacle to the face of said first named roll when in frictional engagement therewith, means Cil comprising a lever' for moving said second roll into and out of engagement with said first named roll and adapted automatically in one position of the lever to hold said second roll out of engagement with the iirst named roll, and means for driving said iirst named roll, said second roll hav Y ing a spiral rib extending a plurality of times about the roll adapted by engagement with said first named roll to cause said second roll to rotate for applying a film of glue from the receptacle to the face of said nrst named roll.

In a. filming machine, the combination of a frame, a roll rotatably mounted in said frame, a receptacle adapted to hold a supply of glue below said roll, a shaft journalled in said frame adiacent to said roll, arms keyed on said shaft at opposite end portions thereof so as to Vextend radially with respect to the shaft, a Vsecond roll rotatably mounted on said arms within said receptacle, yielding means for holding said second roll normally in frictional engagement with said first named roll `for applying a film of glue from the receptacle to the face of said first named roll. and means for driving said first named roll, said second roll having a spiral rib extending a plurality of times about the roll adapted by engagement with said iirst named roll to cause said second roll to rotate for applying a lm of glue to said iirst named roll.

In a filming machine, the combination of a frame, a roll rotatably mounted in said frame, a receptacle adapted to hold a supply of glue below said roll, a shaft journalled in said frame adjacent to said roll, arms keyed on said shaft at opposite end portions thereof so as to extend radially with respect to the shaft, a second roll rotatably mounted on said arms within said receptacle, yielding means for holding saidv second roll normally in frictional engagement with said first named roll for applying a film of glue from the receptacle to the face of said iirst named roll, means for driving said first named roll, and cam means located adjacent to one of said arms adapted by a stroke into operative position to move the arm for carrying the second roll out of operative engagement with the firs'. namedroll, said second roll having a spiral rib extending a plurality of times about the roll adapted by engagement with said first named roll to cause said second roll to rotate for applying a film of glue to said first named roll.
15. In a filming machine, the combination of a frame, a roll rotatably mounted on said frame, a second roll rotatably mounted on said frame substantially directly above said first named roll and movable toward and from said first named roll so as to cooperate therewith for forwarding a panel between said rolls, yielding means serving to press said rolls together, adjustable means for holding said rolls in spaced relation to each other against the action of said yielding means, an intermediate roll located adjacent to one of said first named two rolls at one side thereof, a second intermediate roll located adjacent to the other oi said first named two rolls at the opposite side thereof, receptacles for glue located directly beneath said intermediate rolls respectively, ..-ckup rolls rotatably mounted on said frame within said receptacles respectively each adapted by frictional engagement with the adjacent intermediate roll to apply a im of glue from the receptacle to the face. of said intermediate roll for transfer to the adjacent one of said iirst named two rolls, and means for rotating said first namedV two rolls and said intermediate rolls for carrying a panel between said first named two rolls and applying a film of glue upon oppositev faces of the panel.
16. In a filming machine, the combination of a frame, an applicator roll rotatably mounted on said frame, an intermediate roll rotatably mounted adjacent to said applicator roll at one side thereof, two arms pivotally mounted on a horizontal axis on said frame adjacent to the op- 'up rolls rotatably mounted on said frame within said receptacles respectively each adapted by frictional engagement with the adjacent intermediate roll to apply a film of glue from the receptacle to the face of said intermediate roll for transfer to the adjacent applicator roll, and means for rotating said applicator rolls and said intermediate rolls for carrying a panel between the applicator rolls and applying a film of glue upon the opposite faces of the panel.

In a filming machine, the combination of a frame, an applicator roll rotatably mounted on said frame, an intermediate roll rotatably mounted-adjacent to said applicator roll at one side thereof, two arms pivotally mounted on a horizontal axis on said frame adjacent to the opposite ends of said applicator roll, a second applicator roll rotatably mounted on said arms in position to be moved into and out of engagement with said rst named applicator roll substantially directly above said` first named applicator roll, yielding means serving normally to press said second applicator roll toward said first named applicator roll, adjustable links pivotally mounted on said arms adapted to hold said second applicator roll in adjusted spaced relation to said first named applicator roll against the' action of said yielding means, a second intermediate roll rotatably mounted on the axis of said arms in posi-V tion to engage said second applicator roll atone sideythereof, receptacles for glue located directly beneath said intermediate rolls respectively, pickup rolls rotatably mounted on said frame within said .receptacles respectively each adapted by frictional engagement with the adjacent intermediate roll to apply a iilm of glue vfrom the receptacle` to the face of said intermediate roll for transfer to the adjacent applicator roll, means for driving said first named two rolls,l means for drivsuch that the applicator rolls when driven are adapted to carry a panel between them for the application of a lm of glue upon opposite .faces of the panel.
