Patented Oct. 8, 1940 i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LIEAN S FOB- SUPPORTING AND DELIVERING HAIRPINS THE LIKE Otto Klotz, Chicago, Ill., assignor of one-third to Milton Klotz, and one-third to Jerry Kramer, both of Chicago, Ill.
Application October 5, 1939, Serial No. 298,087
11 Claims. (01; 312-83) This invention relates to means for supporting Fig.4 is a cross sectional view taken substanand delivering hairpins and the like and it has tially at the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. for its object the provision of a new and im- Referring now to the several figures of the proved form and arrangement of parts by which drawing, in which corresponding parts are in- 5 a series of hooked members such as hairpins are dicated by the same reference characters, readily available for use, one at a time, by hairindicates a base member of wood, or the like, dressers, for example. An operator in a beauty having an auxiliary base member ll preferably of parlor often requires a very considerable numsheet metal hingedly connected therewith at [2. her of hairpins and it is highly important, from Upon the top face of the auxiliary base member 10* an efficiency and speed standpoint, that the pins II, a supporting member IS in the form of a be quickly and easily available one after another sheet of metal is secured on edge, being held with a minimum of attention on the part of rigidly in position with respect to the plate II the operator so as to enable the operator to give in the arrangement shown by means of angle his undivided attention to the manipulation and bars I4 and I5, as is best shown in Fig. 1. As is arrangement of the hair. clearly shown in Fig. 2, the upper edge pori5 For meeting these requirements, I have protion of plate I3 is obliquely disposed so s to vided an improved arrangement of mechanism provide an inclined slide bar portion [6 adapted adapted to support a large number of hairpins to slidably support a plurality of hooked memand arranged so that the removal of one pin bers such as hairpins ll of ordinary form, such from its final support position serves to permit hairpins being supported in straddling relation 20 the next adjacent pin on the support to move to the platet t e reel edge of the y p forwardly into a similar final support position tion of plate I 3, an extension portion I8 is prowith its leg portions hanging free and clear so vided of triangular form tapering to a point at as to be readily and quickly grasped by an operl9. As is best shown in Fig. e portion i8 ator. My preferred arrangement comprises an in the arrangement shown is bent around toward 25 inclined supporting bar upon which hairpins are the' fr t s s to cause the extreme d p to be arranged preliminarily, together with .a, tion of the extension l8 to extend forwardly. At movably mounted lever at the lower portion of the opposite edge o the plate it is p d the supporting bar so positioned that the rewith a forwardly'pr j ng eXtensiOn U t e 11p- 0. moval of the pin from the lower end of the bar Der edge portion of which is substantially parallel serves by a camming action to give the lever an with the slide bar DOItiOn 0f t o y f e operative stroke for releasing the next adjacent plate, being arranged at a slightly lower level. hairpin from engagement with a retainer by At DD sides of the plate 3 in Conve which the supply of pins is held in a slightly iently spaced relation thereto, I have provided elevated position on the supporting bar. It has standards 2| and 22 provided at their upper ends 35- been one of the objects of this invention to prowith horizontally disposed pins 23 and 24, revide an improved arrangement of elements comspectively, extending toward the plate 13. Upon prising a grooved part adapted to be moved by such pins, I have pivotally mounted a lever or the lever into position for receiving a single hairarm 25 the rear end portion of which is in the pin into the groove so that upon the return moveo o a y Comprising legs 26 end y 4o ment of the lever such engaged pin is moved which the lever is movably mounted in position. downwardly with the lever away from the supply In e arrangement shown, the ever 25 and the of pins on the supporting bar. connected mounting legs 26 and 2! are formed in- It is another object of this invention to imtegrally' Out of sheet metal, the ends of the legs prove devices of this type in sundry details here- 6 a d- 21 being twisted t u 90 for xp d 45' inafter pointed out. The preferred means by ing their Connection With the p 23 and As which the several objects of the invention have is clearly shown in the lever 25 s be been attained are illustrated in the accompanydownwardly somewhat sharply immediately in ing drawing, in which front of the crossbar portion 28 of the yoke so Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the preferred form as to bring the face of the lever 25 closely adja- 50 of the improved device. cent to the shoulder at the lower end of the Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the device. slide bar portion iii of the plate l3. At a still Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of a portion further advanced point, the lever 25 is bent of the device with the controlling lever in downwardly and then upwardly to provide a 56 changed position; and bowed portion at 29, such bowed portion being provided with a slot 33 adapted to'receive the end of the forwardly projecting slide bar 20 therein, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 2. In the position of the parts as shown in Fig. 2 the lever 25 is supported by engagement with the forwardly extending plate portion 20.
At the portion of the lever 25 directly opposite to the shoulder at the lower end of the slide bar portion Hi, I have provided a bearing plate 3| the rear edge of which stands normally in close proximity to the shoulder at the lower end of the slide bar portion IS. The arrangement is such that when the lever 25 stands in the position as shown in Fig. 2, a series of hooked parts such as hairpins I! are held in position on the slide bar I6, the bearing plate 3| serving to prevent the pins from sliding oiT the lower end of the slide bar. When, however, the lever 25 is raised to the position as shown in Fig. 3, a recess 32 in the form of a notch in the edge of the bearing plate 3| is brought into position opposite the lowermost hairpin I! on the slide bar l6 so as to permit such lowermost pin to enter the slot 32. The arrangement is such that upon the next succeeding downward movement of the lever 25 the single one of the pins ll engaging the notch 32 is moved downwardly with the lever so as to be freed from the lower end of the slide bar l6. As soon as the lever 25 reaches its normal lowered position as shown in Fig. 2, the pin is freed in turn from the bearing plate 3| and is permitted to drop into engagement with the inclined upper face of the extension 20, the downward movement of such pin being stopped when the pin reaches the bowed portion 29 of the lever.
Upon the upper ends of the standards 2! and 22, I have rigidly mounted in position a heavy yoke 33 the cross bar portion of which is rigidly connected with a guard bar 34 which is held in slightly spaced relation to the slide bar 16 for preventing the hairpins H from becoming disarranged upon the slide bar.
With the parts in position as shown in Fig. 2, a considerable number of hairpins I1 are placed in position upon the upper end portion of the slide bar 16, the inclination of the slide bar being such that the pins are adapted to slide downwardly between the slide bar l6 and the guard 34 until they are brought into engagement with the bearing plate 3 I. In order to control, more or less, the pressure of the pins against-the bearing plate 3|, I have provided a set screw 35, mounted adjustably in the auxiliary base plate II, for enabling an operator to change the angle of the slide bar l6 as may be required. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the auxiliary base plate II is shown in slightly raised position by reason of the set screw 35 being in operative engagement with the base M). It will be appreciated that the angle of inclination of the slide bar Hi can be decreased by turning the set screw 35 in the direction for raising the auxiliary base plate II still further. The pressure of the hairpins l1 upon the bearing plate 3| is still further limited by the curvature of the extension [8 to one side and then forwardly, it being appreciated that the presence of this return bend in the slide bar serves to have a braking effect with respect to the downward movement of the pins upon the slide bar.
With a plurality of pins I! in position upon the device as shown in Fig. 2, with a single pin I! in position upon the forwardly extending portion 20, the device is in condition for normal use. When an operator desires a pin, the lowermost pin 11 adjacent to the bowed portion 29 of the lever is, of course, readily available, since it hangs with the major portion of its length clear and free below the projecting portion 20 and the lever 25 and well in advance of the body portion of the plate 13. The arrangement is such that the single pin II on the extension 20 can be drawn very quickly and easily downwardly and toward the left in Fig. 2 out of position on the device, such downward movement of the pin I1 serving by a camming action on the loop 29 to move the lever 25 upwardly into the position as shown in Fig. 3 so as to release the next adjacent pin H which moves promptly on the next succeeding downward stroke of the lever 25 into position on the extension 20 to be stopped by said lever as shown in Fig. 2. The arrangement is such that as many pins as are required can be moved one at a time with no delay whatever and with no attention whatever on the part of the operator.
While the form of device as shown in the drawing and as above described is preferred, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the form and arrangement shown and described except so far as the claims may be so limited, since changes might well be made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
